Paying Money into Someone elses account
Is it true that you can not pay money over the counter into someone elses back account any more?
I have a Nationwide account and my family have told me that their local branch will not let them pay money over the counter into my account?
Is this for real?

Re: Paying Money into Someone elses account
I do it all the time to my families accounts, one at Halifax and one at Alliance & Leicester.
Not sure why Nationwide would be different

Re: Paying Money into Someone elses account
Within the last two months I payed some money(cash) into my sons Nationwide account at a local Nationwide branch. I cannot understand why anyone was told they couldn't.
Since when did any bank refuse to allow payments into them.

Re: Paying Money into Someone elses account
I sold a camera on the classifieds a couple of weeks ago & the buyer paid cash into another branch of Nationwide no problem. If it was a large sum there may be restrictions to do with money laundering regs.
Why not just ring the branch & ask them?

Re: Paying Money into Someone elses account
Before I finally set up my internet banking (very recently), I was always paying cash directly into peoples bank accounts over the counter and not once did I have a problem and that was with several different banks so personally I find that hard to believe, but there may well be a reason?

Re: Paying Money into Someone elses account
From what I've seen there's still paying in slips in the banks that you fill in and hand over to the cashier, or put in one of those quick deposit shutes to avoid the queues. Even though they ask on the slip who's paying it in there's no id check so you could put whatever you like, even the name of the person whose account it is. Never been asked for id or anything, they're all too glad to receive your money!
Maybe if it's loads of money they might have rules and regulations requiring them to take more interest in who's paying it in? Similar to when you withdraw or transfer large amounts, the government want to know about it and the banks are obliged to tell them.

Re: Paying Money into Someone elses account
Thanks for the replies everyone.
My dad says there are signs everywhere at his nationwide to say that you can only pay money into an account you have a card for.
Maybe i will call em.

So you have to prove who you are at Nationwide now? You can't just use a paying-in slip?
I wouldn't have thought that the malicious payment of funds into other people's accounts was a big problem, or a particularly effective money laundering technique.

Re: Paying Money into Someone elses account
If I recall correctly this has to do with which bank you pay it into and to which bank it has to go....You'll have to make certain you pay it into a clearing bank which strangly enough not all high street banks are...And considering Nationwide isn't a bank I wouldn't be to surprised....
Second criteria would be the amount.....RBS looked quite strange upon me when I paid a large 5 figure sum in cash into my brother in laws bank account (sold his car for him....) and questions were asked....

Effective not for the recipient...But when you have to proof your identity it is also not effective for the sender!

Re: Paying Money into Someone elses account
I am guessing that it might have something to do with individual bank's Money Laundering rules
