Oh God, does this mean the BBC and other news crews will be camping out there bringing live broadcasts from the fields for the next month They're bound to go over the top about it as usual.

it's happened a few times through out history already , the Spanish flu (1918) killed between 20 -50 million people

Yeah, but medical advances since 1918 have been enormous.

We aren't going to have hundreds of thousands or millions dying from bird flu.

Its not going 'over the top'...... This could be disastrous. At higher levels in key critical industries a hell of a lot of contingency has been discussed and formed ready to put into place if god forbid the disease crosses the species barrier.

This could potentially be catastrophic and as others have said, replicate some of the major events in world history.

There is no vaccine for this 'flu' as we yet don't know what it looks like in a mutated human form. The drugs that would be available will be the ones for current strains and no one knows if this will have any effect. These stocks are also in limited supply and I guess will be distributed accordingly... gov officials, police, army, doctors etc.

True, but if the disease hasn't become an epidemic an a densely populated place like China, where many people quite literally live with their chickens, the chances of it becoming widespread in this country are next to zero.

Still, it won't stop the press having a field day, some very nasty people cashing in on the fear, and some very vulnerable people getting even more scared to step out of their front doors than they are already.

I don't know about you, but I don't spend 13 hours a day inhaling bird poop like the people in Asia who caught the disease did.

Re: Bird Flu

For a start BM employ close to 7,000 people. Many of them in lower paid jobs and the poultry farming industry as a whole employs hundreds of thousands of people in the UK.

If Bernard Matthews farms can be infected this easily then it doesn't bode well for other less clinical operations. Remember the devastating effect the BSE infection had on the uk farming industry?

Time will tell but i can forsee the same happening again

Not so sure its such a good idea to transport the gassed bird carcasses to Staffordshire for incineration - even if they are in sealed lorries.

I presume that's where the appropriate incineration facilities are, so they have to be transported there somehow. Not a good idea to just burn them in-situ, like they did with the BSE-risk carcases. This stuff is in a different league of virulence.

Re: Bird Flu

If we have no vaccine, then what are the people entering the plant being given. I heard on the news that anyone who has to visit the site is receiving a vaccine.

As for my doubts about the whole thing - well I'm sorry but I have just a little cynical after listening to scare tactics all my life.

This week alone we were told that the planet is dying and we are all doomed, and then while we were relling from that they hit us with bird flu. I now take EVERY scare story with a pinch of salt. I don't lose any sleep over any of them, and won't ever.

Cos lets be honest, if the bird flu hadn't have appeared, there would have been some other castasrophy waiting round the corner.

Live your life - **** is gonna happen.

The vaccine they are being given is Tamiflu...... This drug is designed to combat current strains.... Not any future mutations, but is better than nothing.
