Family Short Break in England in May?

Hi guys. I've just spent the whole evening with friends trying to work out where on earth to go for a long weekend (Fri-Mon) in May. We have 6 adults, 1 child aged 11 and 3 aged 5.

Any ideas please?

Obviously it depends where you live. No point suggesting Bournemouth if you live in Newcastle. Actually, no point suggesting Bournemouth at all.

Re: Family Short Break in England in May?

What always works for us (6 adults, 6 kids - 8,5,4,3,1 15 weeks) is renting a big cottage preferably with a garden but anywhere near a beach. It doesn't really matter where you go (unless you want museums etc but then being from London you have all that anyway) you just have a good time with the kids during the day, then when they are in bed, spend the night drinking and arguing playing games. Simple, but effective

Yeah we debated that. But it works out very expensive. Also looked at this similar alternative: www.ribbyhall.co.uk which is slightly cheaper and only 8 mins from Blackpool. Although a 6 person 2 floor log cabin with plasma telly is about £625 for the weekend.

Also considered Butlins.

Some Centre Parcs codes (not sure if still work):

code for up to 40% off is PPWEB,
but its only on 3 or 4 bed villas mon - fri and selected dates

code to save 25% off is VL11

code to to give £100 reduction dependent on date/accommodation is BP02

Re: Family Short Break in England in May?

My Mum & Dad moved down to the Isle of Wight just before Christmas and having not spent much time there before there are some really nice places. Good mixture of some dead quiet, country side bvillages and some more kid friendly places.

What about camping? It can hardly be called cheap for the first year (unless you raid car boots and ebay out of season) but the investment in the kit soon pays off. We'll have two or three times more holidays this year and save money.

I've tried suggesting this in the past as I did quite a bit of camping as a child and as a teen in the Air Cadets but the missus won't go anywhere on holiday that doesn't have it's own dishwasher and washing machine. (Not forgetting the jacuzzi too)

Plenty of camp sites have washing machines now not just the bigger ones and all but the smallest farm camp sites have proper sinks you can use for dish washing for you to offer doing the dishes in.

Get hold of an Outwell catalogue and show her the range of matching accessories that they now do for tents (including fitted carpet ) and she'll soon change her mind.

Re: Family Short Break in England in May?

Anyone been to a John Fowler Holiday Park (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset). Currently looking at their Tolroy Manor park on the north Cornwall coast near St Ives. They've got the following for £153:

Quote:
Yeomans (House: sleeps 6-8).
3 bedroom stylish purpose built house, 1 double bed, 2 twin rooms,(1 downstairs) lounge/diner with double bed settee & col TV, fitted kitchen with elec cooker, fridge & microwave, bathroom and extra shower room.
Just wondering how good their park facilities are and the entertainment.

Re: Family Short Break in England in May?

We've been to a few John Fowlers over the last couple of years and I think we stayed at that actual one October 2005 but I'd have to check with the wife to be sure.

I'd recommend them but the houses can be a little small (but clean) so I'd go at least one size more than you think you need. The kitchens is particular are very small but well equipped. Same with the swimming pools at the places we have been to. The play areas have been excellent though, and the kids clubs (one during the day plus another session in the bar in the evening based around a kids disco) proved popular with my two, but not my cup of tea.

I'd say that they make an ideal base to explore from but a bit limited if you was looking to spend most of your time there. I'd recommend that you took your own duvets/pillows as the ones there seem small and thin.

Bedruthan Steps Hotel

Best family orientated hotel in Cornwall.

Great food, great facilities, great location.

You might get in this time of year (3 year waiting list for summer holiday spaces though).

It is rather expensive though.
