Don't be ripped off this Xmas - shop around

In the spirit of Xmas, I would just like to remind people not to buy the 1st thing they come across when shopping for electronics this Xmas.

I was urged to post this message after being in my local Argos store this afternoon. And they claim they do 'low prices' !!

I saw a 256mb SD card 'reduced' from £24.99 to the ultimate low of £17.49 - a bargain, eh?

Now I am afraid that unsuspecting customers (like mums buying for husband, sons etc) will go ahead and buy at this price.

I just did a quick search of amazon and mymemory, and found 2GB cards anywhere from £12.93 to £19.99. Admittedly some of these prices would be subject to p&p, but it would only be £2-£3.

So you can get a card nearly 10x bigger for less.

Shame on you Argos !! And I am sure that you are buying in these cards any more expensive than amazon or mymemory are.

Retailers are actually raising prices on most things and make them look like deals.

I buy mainly off the net.

Argos is rarely the cheapest these days but you can pick the stuff up there and then, so it's worth paying the premium sometimes.
Time is money, as they say.

Exactly. I'm always on the look out for the bargains, but buying at Xmas is always expensive. Plus i usually give random gifts during the year, rather than at Xmas.

When has any high street matched an online price for anything anyway?

Pointing out the obviously there me thinks & how about Argos don't stock 2GB cards & their prices are the same if not cheaper than every other high street store..

posted elsewhere, but worth saying again.

I have found this a fantastic site for scanning the 'net for best price. Works better than kelkoo for media stuff

www.find-dvd.co.uk

click thru that site for music CDs too

Are those prices from an Amazon market place seller? Amazon have for all market place orders a flat fee of £4 plus 50p per kg for all electronics including memory cards, and it seems most market place sellers seem to make their profit from postage these days. I've brought a number of books recently listed at a penny Amazon then stick on £2.75 in postage each (not that I mind as I shop by the total price).

Re: Don't be ripped off this Xmas - shop around

I reckon Argos have always been expensive, especially for electrical items. They used tobe very handy, a place where you could buy loads of presents in one go, but now with online buying they seem to be out on a limb.
Mind you I expect the Mansfield store will still be packed solid with local thickies clutching their purses every day this month up until Christmas. That lot still shop at the Co-Op

Some of the memory cards on Amazon are from market sellers (indeed the one at £12.93 is), but Amazon also sell plenty themselves, much much cheaper than Argos.

Re: Don't be ripped off this Xmas - shop around

aye, you can usually pick up a nice Sandisk now for around £20ish for 2Gb (depends on which version, think the Ultra2's are a bit pricier still)

but most shops on the high street sell cards at the price they were a year or so ago......my local Sainsbury does them similar, say £20 for 256Mb or 512Mb for £35 etc.....i think the currys.digital near me is a bit more respectable on the prices now, but still far from doing a 2Gb for £20...heh

Re: Don't be ripped off this Xmas - shop around

But when the high street sells things at far higher prices than the net, then it annoys me when they do nothing but moan about how tight they are getting it and how people aren't spending the money they used to.

Maybe if you reduced your prices a bit !!

I realise that high street retailers have shops to maintain and rent/rates to pay, but surely they could sell things closer to internet prices than they are at currently.

I would much rather buy locally - it supports jobs, helps the local economy, I get the item immediately, plus any returns are easier to deal with.

However, I refuse to be ripped off.

Maybe, in the next 5 or 10 years, when people are buying from the internet more than the high street they will actually take a good look at themselves and do something about it. If they can't see the error of their ways then good riddance to them.

As I mentioned earlier, I am sure that companies the size of the Currys group or Argos (plus others) buy in such bulk that they must be able to sell at prices much closer to the net prices. It just stinks of getting as much from Joe Public as you can.

I don't disagree - just pointing out that you need to shop around for delivery charges as well.
