Unhappy Ebay help .....

Anyone been in a situation where they have sold an item that was 100% working fine when sent but the buyer has claimed afterwards the item doesnt work. It cannot have been damaged in transit Buyer is asking for a refund or replacement.

The item in my case is a AMD Athlon XP CPU taken from a working system.

What happened in the end? Did paypal take the buyers side?

Any advice on what to do in this situation?
Thanks.

Re: Ebay help .....

Can you test it again at your end?

If it was working then I'd say they fried it withstatic or are using it in the wrong mobo. This is just my take not advice.

Say you can refund them when they send it back minus P+P since it left working just to avoid a fight.

Re: Ebay help .....

Ask the buyer to return the item if it is faulty, you will pay for return postage and send him his money back and apoligise for any inconvenence, but specify that the item was in perfect working order when it was posted out and you are not held responsible for damages, did you offer postal insurance,if you did and he did not take it he has no claim with you.

Re: Ebay help .....

When I sold this I offered two postage options recorded and special. When the buyer bought the cpu he choose recorded which I thought was a bit funny as the cpu was worth £75 and special delivery was only £2 more. I clearly stated on the auction recorded is only insured upto £32. I sent a message saying I recommend special delivery in case it was lost but he sent a message back saying it shouldnt turn up damaged if packed properly. Didnt seem to care if it got lost.

Anyway it was sent properly packed in a cpu box protected by foam and lots of bubble wrap. Buyer says no damage to packaging.

I have sold the system the cpu was from so cant even test the cpu if I get it sent back to me. It is an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Socket A cpu.

Will have to see if I can get someone else to test it or a local computer shop.

Re: Ebay help .....

Also make sure you know all the codes off the cpu before sending it.
As this is a old trick of swapping their broken cpu for your working one.
And if you do not have the codes for the one you sent out, you have no way of knowing if they swapped it or not.

My rating is
Feedback Score: 201
Positive Feedback: 99.5%
Members who left a positive: 203
Members who left a negative: 1
All positive feedback received: 270
30+ are from buyers

His is:

Positive Feedback: 100%
Members who left a positive: 20
Members who left a negative: 0
All positive feedback received: 21

Have asked him to send it back. As another member said he will probably make sure it wont work before sending back so whatever happens I will have to refund him and end up with a non working cpu that was working when sold or I just let him start a dispute via Paypal.

MrFurious did your buyer pay by Paypal? Did he file a dispute? If so what was the outcome? Thanks.

Re: Ebay help .....

why on earth did he pay £75 for a 3200 anyhow???

even a 3500 goes for around £60 brand new now....

i reckon he found out he paid way over the odds and is looking for the only way to get it returned without it costing him.....

Re: Ebay help .....

Do refund and put it behind you.I've recently been in a similar position to the purchaser and the cost to the seller has the potential to go way beyond the auction bid price being refunded.
I typed out a fairly comprehensive account of my tale but i as i was sending it i lost my wireless connection and the post was lost.If you want some of the details i'll repost later.

Re: Ebay help .....

If you dont mind posting more details when you get a chance, about what happened in your situation Lynx that would be great.

I have not heard back from the buyer after I sent a message requesting it to be sent back, where as before he was replying instantly, but he could just be offline. Will have to wait and see.

Thanks.

Re: Ebay help .....

I purchased an item recently which was described as immaculate and as new.On opening the packaging i immediately noticed a very obvious repair and contacted the seller at once for his comment,to which he went on the defencive and implied i was a liar.Short version,i filed a dispute with pp and escalated to a claim for a refund. The seller maintained an air of innocence and dug in over this.PP at this point requested that i gather supporting evidence from a neutral third party at my cost and send this to them.I complied, they transferred the auction cost plus p+p, result and end of story...well not quite. The seller is spitting nails and demanding i return the item at once....no issues at all with this except he is expecting me to arrange the shipping and pay for it - aye right
The bad news for him that he doesn't know yet is he's now in the firing line to cover my expenses in terms of collecting evidence, faxes to forward it all etc etc etc.PP have informed me they will assist and support me in securing this from the seller. The point being it would have been in his financial interest to co-operate from day one rather than call my integrity into question and attempt to draw me into a bun fight.
I accept you have sent your item in good faith however as paypal don't know this they will request your buyer gets supporting evidence.....at this point you may be Donald Ducked to coin a phrase and pp will refund him at your expense plus you will have to pick up the tab to have it refunded (at which point the cpu gets put to death if it wasn't already and you get neg feedback into the bargain).
You may be in a no win situation here so it's a case of damage limitation.

Re: Ebay help .....

Tell him your not responsible for him screwing up the installation and that you're satisfied the chip worked fine before you sent it out. Its the truth after all. If he leaves you bad feedback comment on it and move on it won't affect your trading ability :anything above 92% is fine for most traders.

Re: Ebay help .....

I got the cpu back from him last week. It was the cpu I had sent. As I had sold the pc it was from as a barebones I had no pc to test it.

I took it to a local pc shop to test. They have just confirmed it is fully working. They charge £10 to test and £5 for a written confirmation it is working.

I am going to tell the buyer he will have to pay for the testing cost and return postage.

I think he will probably just try claiming a refund. Can he still do this as I have proof the item works?

Try a different question then.

Would you offer the buyer a refund minus the postage costs and testing fees? I assume ebay will refund the auction fees.

Question Problem with an ebayer. What would you do?

Almost a month ago i sold a pc motherboard on ebay. The motherboard was working fine and i was so confident about it that I had available a full refund option within 7 days of receipt.
Today after 15 days of him receiving the motherboard I got his email saying that my board doesn't work and that he wants a refund or he will take the matter further. He had also left positive feedback for me at the time so I concluded that the motherboard must be working or why would leave a positive?
Also when soneone pays me I keep the money on paypal and I wait for 7 days since I think that they might want to send back the item for any reason for a refund. I always have a 7days refund policy. That's how I always work anyway but now 7 days have passed, I got positive feedback from him and I need to refund him?......True maybe he's speaks the truth but its kinda late and his money spent elsewhere. Personally I think that I should not refund him and the mistake is his not mine. I wouldn't sell a damaged board with a 7day refund period policy

Would you refund him?

Re: Problem with an ebayer. What would you do?

I certainly would not. Has he given any further information on the actual problem? As far as I am concerned positive feedback is pretty much accpetance, I know I will never leave feedback until I am satisfied that the goods I have bought are fully working.

All he can do is raise a Paypal dispute, and I am sure despite how idiotic Paypal can be, they will see you have played fairly on your side.

How will PP do that?? Because if the guy's PP account is empty and he won't pay you there's nothing PP can do.

My experience is a seller (not on Ebay) who sent something, the item wasn't received, I filed with PP, I won but the seller's account was empty so PP couldn't do anything... They said the guy couldn't use his PP account unless he repaid me... Yeah right ! He's still trading with PP !

On both cases on this thread it ain't the sellers fault if the buyers don't know what to do with it.

Re: Ebay help .....

I dont beleive this.

Paypal have emailed me telling me they have awarded the buyer a full refund inc p&p costs.

This is even though I have paid to have the item tested and I have a signed letter from the company who tested the item saying it is fully working!

Unbeleivable! Can I appeal?

Re: Ebay help .....

Paypal can be ridiculous sometimes. Whenever I sell a high value item (£500 plus) on ebay I always wait for the Paypal payment to clear or I request a different payment method.

I've seen people get high value items, and then file reports at which point Paypal freeze your account. 99% of the time you lose.

I've been dealing on here at AV-Forums more and more as it's a far better community than ebay has become.

I tend now to only use ebay for buying, and then only if the seller has fantastic feedback.

Re: Ebay help .....

This all turned out to be a scam. As the cpu was verified working and it was just sitting around unused I decided to sell it on the forum. The buyer who purchased it from me informed me the CPU he received was a fake badged 3200 and was infact only a 2500.

I know my 3200 was a real 3200 as it was a retail processor in the box cpu purchased from Scan and it ran fine at 3200 in my pc. The shop I took the cpu too to test obviously didnt notice it was booting at 2500 not 3200!

The ebayer has switched the cpu for a fake 3200 and sent that back to me. He now has my real 3200 and his money.

Normally I make a note of serial numbers but the cpus dont have one. From now on I shall security mark anything I sell so if an item is returned I can check using UV light if it is what I sold.

Beware of this scam.
