There's that shop that's right down by the old twin towers site.....can't remember the name of it now, but you can get some good bargains there....it's a bit like TK Maxx mind (ie a jumble sale)

It's that big dark brown (or black) skyscraper store right next to ground zero.
Don't just shop though. New York is full of architectural wonders and lots of other things to do.

Yeah I have bought loads of stuff there in the past, very cheap. I think it starts with a C, the logo is white with a big C on it.

Re: Outlet shopping near New York

I've been to century 21 and yes like the peeps said it's TK Maxx only bigger and dead busy too!

I did read of a shopping mall near NYC in the Express a little while back, think it's like the Designer Outlets you get over here but can I remember the name! No but I'll have a Google for you, dunno if it's close to Manhattan though.

Liam

Edit, it might be one of these

http://www.greatnorthernmall.com/ but could it be this one? http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=7

Re: Outlet shopping near New York

Century 21 is a pretty good place to bag a bargin or two. Very easy to get carried away!!!!

There is also a shoe shop next door that had some exceptional prices and it may be part of the same store.

I'm not sure if Century 21 have any changing rooms though and I also believe they size their clothes slightly differently to ours, so you may want to check your US equivalent sizes first.

Can anyone comment on the sales tax? I'm not sure if there is extra to pay at the till, that may have caught me out being used to an all-inclusive price.

Re: Outlet shopping near New York

Woodbury Common is the outlet you want to go to. Its about a 40 min journey on a bus, which you can catch from the Port Authority bus station.

I went this time last year, well to be exact we landed on Thanks Giving Day, the sales started the next day and OMG!

People went mad...luckily we left early for the outlet, but nearly every shop had queues to get in, i've never seen anything like it!

Getting into and out of the outlet was a mission in itself! All over the TV all you would ever hear about was how people were getting trampled upon rushing into shops and stuff - it was manic!

Dont mean to put you off, my wife didnt like it but I got some real good bargains out there. Macys was good too, you can get a 12% discount card from there which came in handy!

Have fun!

Re: Outlet shopping near New York

Yeah they don't have changing rooms, I came home with a few pairs of Replay jeans that turned me into a Soprano.

There is no sales tax on items under $100, you can always time your visit during one of the sales tax free weeks which NY do. Where there is no sales tax on items under $500.

Re: Outlet shopping near New York

Will also give a mention to Woodbury Common.

HUGE outlet shopping place. All the big names, Nike, sony, ralph lauren, timberland etc etc.

Can be very very busy dependant on what sales are on, any local holidays etc. but some superb bargins can be had there. about 1 hour north of new york but interstate roads all the way.

Also if in Macy's just ask for a discount card. When i was there in May, it was 20% discount day. I just said that i had lost the card that i had been given and every till operator just said "no problems sir, will take 20% off anyway"

Great great customer service that you know you just wouldn't get here in the uk (" you lost the card - tough luck" would probably be the reply!!!)

Also for cheap gucci versace etc bags and shoes (cough cough )
go to chinatown and go to carnaby street (i think!) and have a look around. if none about just ask any of the shop owners who will meraculously appear with them from the back of the shop.

enjoy!

Re: Outlet shopping near New York

Another vote for Woodbury Common. I was there Mid December last year and it was a great place to shop. It was not too crowded at all, in fact I was supprised at how empty it was. So maybe the trick is to go on a weekday when New Yorkers are working.

This is what she came up with

Hi Paulie,

Just an overview then for whoever needs it !

Best all round favourite place smartwear for womenswear and home = Anthropologie - 375 West Broadway

Best fro young teenage designs = BEBE - Corner 5th west 15th St.

Best casualwear place = Abercrombie & Fitch
720 5th Avenue BUT I believe now there is an even bigger store opposite Henri Bendell on

Best dept. Store = Barney's - Madison / 61st street
(Think Harvey Nichols!!!)
More middle ground - all round dept. store = Bloomingdale's - Lexington / 59th street
(open late Sat. and Friday eve.)

Best sportswear = Nike Town - 6 east 57th street.

Always worth a visit but perhaps sometimes very European in style still is any branch of =
Banana Republic (This is the grown up sister of Gap!)
Armani Exchange
and Replay - 109 prince st.

For bargains always visit OLD NAVY - 18th / 6th Avenue

If you need somewhere to eat try The Gotham Bar + Grill
12 East 12th Street
212-620-420
(Worth booking in advance as always popular with new Yorkers themselves!)

Hope this helps !

Kind regards Jan
Better mind that credit card
