Thanks: Gave 3, Got 24 | Need to Lose Weight Before Xmas
I am around 5ft 9 to 5ft 10, and now weigh just under 13stone. I have put weight on since the birth of my baby girl, I was around 170lbs now am into the 190lb area.
I use to go the gym now and again to lift weights but nothing to serious.
Now am looking to get back to the gym or any other exercise to shed some weight in time for xmas.
Now instead of messing about I want to do things properly now. I would want someone who knows about all this stuff to give me a training regime so I can stick to it, as usually when I go the gym I just do what I feel like at the time.
And also I dont eat any breakfast in the morning is this a bad mistake, I dont tend to eat anything to afternoon time about 2pm.
I always drink loads of water so thats ok.
Can someone give me ideas on what to eat during the day, and what to cut out like carbohydrates or anything?
Also I have got some protien shake and creatine tablets is this advisable to take when am trying to lose weight?
any help will be appreciated as am looking to get back into it in a few days!

I'm no expert by any means, but I'll throw my little bit in till someone who knows pipes up.
The main thing I've learnt is there is only one way to lose weight.
That's to use more energy than you take in.
Weights is useless I believe.
You'd be better running or something that makes you seriously sweat. Aneurobic exercise, I think it's called.
I think the latest way of thinking eating-wise is "little but often", so leaving it that long is probably bad news. It can mess your metabolism up.
Good luck mate, I'm lucky, I can eat what I want.
I'm 5' 7" and about 148lbs. Not bad mid 40's.
I do sympathise, my missus is trying to lose weight and finding it hard.

My advice is consult a dietician. I would imagine it might cost you about £30 consultation fee, but would be money well spent, IMO.
Those protein drinks cost a load, so I can't see that being too much for you.
No doubt (s)he could advise you on the best exercise too.
There's also tons of info on the net, if you nose around

I'm no expert either, but I can confirm that the best weight loss program I followed was called interval training ... it consisted of 3 (maybe 4 sessions) a week in the gym....
start with a good warm up... min. 10 minutes... then
20 minutes on the rower
- 1 gentle minute, followed by 1 minute where you go all out, then another gentle minute, followed by another psycho minute and keep alternating
20 minutes on the cycle
- same regime as the rower
20 minutes on the running machine.
- same again
then a cool down.
In the "gentle minute" don't stop, keep going but allow yourself to recover and get your breathe back. If you're not panting at the end of the "working minute" then you're not working hard enough!
PS remember to take a towel with you!
PPS Good luck |

Hi there
The first thing you have to do is realise why you have put on weight. It's obvious really, and that's because you eat too much. Secondly you are living a sedentary lifestyle, and not doing enough exercise, for the required time.
Here is a plan that you should adopt immediatey. You will lose a stone at least befor xmas.
1. Stop eating take aways.
2. Stop eating dairy produce. Milk, eggs, cheese.
3. Do not eat any food that has been prepared by someone else.
(does this sound extreme?) it is supposed to.
4. Stop drinking alcohol for the time being.
5. Throw out snacks, white bread, sweets, puddings.
6. Realise that anything out of a packet or a tin is full of saturated fat.
7. Start thinking about exercise and get weights and protein pills out of your mind. While you are at it get gyms out of your mind because they are a fad, and a waste of money.
8. Get some running shoes and a friend that likes running.
9. You are what you eat.
10. Your diet from now on is white meat. Chicken and fish. Grilled for every meal with as much salad as you can eat. As much fruit as you want, and as many vegetables.
11. Plan your food in advance and remember. Do not eat prcessed food or anything that has been prepared by anyone else.
12. Take up running.
13. Start with half a mile and work up.
14. Remember 70 and 80 year olds run marathons. I am 49 and run about 35 - 40 miles per week.
15. Drink the occasional glass of red wine
16. DO NOT SMOKE
You will lose weight. Fast.
Enjoy.
Mike

I recently (two months back) lost a stone in 3 weeks by eating nothing but fruit during the day and a healthy meal in the evening. since then i've just been keeping my diet sensible/balanced and it's stayed off.
Cheap option that may work for you.

Porridge oats is the way to go, not the instant stuff but the real whole oats porridge, don't worry you can still heat this up in a bowl in the microwave in a few minutes, so just as "instant".

I think people get a bit obsessed about what to eat and when. Remember, whether it is breakfast lunch or dinner, do not eat processed food, pies ready meals, take aways. They will kill you eventually. For breakfast eat fruit, wholemeal bread. Avoid dairy produce. Anything white will kill you. IT IS FAT. I call it WHITE DEATH. (Sugar, milk, cheese, eggs, white bread, fat, SALT.)
Exercise. Great idea about a tredmill, but make sure you use it. Don't mess around and go on it once a week. Make sure you bang away at it every day. Try and adopt the saying that ECERCISE is NOT NEGOTIABLE. You have to do it every day. Perhaps have one day off. After a while you will miss not doing it, and that is when you will suddenly realise that you need to buy new trousers.
TAKE THIS AWAY WITH YOU. DO NOT EAT ANYTHING THAT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY SOMEONE ELSE. THEY WILL HAVE INSERTED INTO IT, FAT, SUGAR, AND SALT TO MAKE IT TASTE BETTER (white death).
ANYONE FANCY DOING A HALF MARATHON IN 3 MONTHS TIME?

4 rules: - When you are hungrey, eat
- Eat what you want
- Eat conciously (i.e. slowly so you can feel when you are full)
- When you are full, stop eating.
And do some exercise. You haven't got much to lose, so just knuckle down and you'll be there in no time.

Just wanted to add a few things myself. Everyone has things they do and don't do, and things they recommend and wouldn't recommend.
Personally i want to stay away from running and treadmills. High impact on the knees. I'd like mine still working if i reach 70/80. Athletes seem to get problems with joints later in life, it's not something i want. You should be able to lose weight and keep it off by eating correctly and just generally being an active person.
There are a lot of foods that are bad for us in various ways, but they are also good for us in some ways. The key to this is moderation. Chips are bad for you if you eat too much, but i hear there are certain things in them that are good for you to have every now and again.
This staying away from anything white sounds a little drastic to me. I know our bodies aren't properly used to dairy products yet, but eggs are also good for you in moderation, and semi skimmed milk can't be bad for you if you only have it in your tea. Sugar i totally agree with, i haven't had any for years after conditioning myself to use sweeteners.
Cut out the crap like crisps, takeaways and butter etc, and eat everything else in moderation while keeping yourself active. It is worth seeing a dietician. I think most doctors surgeries have a dietician on hand for answering questions.
Above all, stay active. If you do like to watch a lot of TV, find some excercises you can do during intervals, or even during the programme itself. One thing i find offputting when weight training is counting your reps. If you're doing a few excercises while watching tv, chances are it'll take your mind off how many you're doing or got to do, and you'll do more this way.
I may be right, i may be wrong, but you have to see what works for you as our bodies are different and will react differently to various excercises and diet strategies.

Delboy,
one last thing. Try not to become TOO obsessive about the whole weight thing
end of the day life is here to be enjoyed. You are a long time dead make sure you enjoy life and don't become a slave to your diet and treadmill
