I am around 5ft 9 to 5ft 10, and now weigh just under 13stone. I have put weight on since the birth of my baby girl, I was around 170lbs now am into the 190lb area. I use to go the gym now and again to lift weights but nothing to serious. Now am looking to get back to the gym or any other exercise to shed some weight in time for xmas. Now instead of messing about I want to do things properly now. I would want someone who knows about all this stuff to give me a training regime so I can stick to it, as usually when I go the gym I just do what I feel like at the time. And also I dont eat any breakfast in the morning is this a bad mistake, I dont tend to eat anything to afternoon time about 2pm. I always drink loads of water so thats ok. Can someone give me ideas on what to eat during the day, and what to cut out like carbohydrates or anything? Also I have got some protien shake and creatine tablets is this advisable to take when am trying to lose weight? any help will be appreciated as am looking to get back into it in a few days! |

I'm no expert by any means, but I'll throw my little bit in till someone who knows pipes up. The main thing I've learnt is there is only one way to lose weight. That's to use more energy than you take in. Weights is useless I believe. You'd be better running or something that makes you seriously sweat. Aneurobic exercise, I think it's called. I think the latest way of thinking eating-wise is "little but often", so leaving it that long is probably bad news. It can mess your metabolism up. Good luck mate, I'm lucky, I can eat what I want. I'm 5' 7" and about 148lbs. Not bad mid 40's. I do sympathise, my missus is trying to lose weight and finding it hard. |

My advice is consult a dietician. I would imagine it might cost you about £30 consultation fee, but would be money well spent, IMO. Those protein drinks cost a load, so I can't see that being too much for you. No doubt (s)he could advise you on the best exercise too. There's also tons of info on the net, if you nose around |

I'm no expert either, but I can confirm that the best weight loss program I followed was called interval training ... it consisted of 3 (maybe 4 sessions) a week in the gym.... start with a good warm up... min. 10 minutes... then 20 minutes on the rower - 1 gentle minute, followed by 1 minute where you go all out, then another gentle minute, followed by another psycho minute and keep alternating 20 minutes on the cycle - same regime as the rower 20 minutes on the running machine. - same again then a cool down. In the "gentle minute" don't stop, keep going but allow yourself to recover and get your breathe back. If you're not panting at the end of the "working minute" then you're not working hard enough! PS remember to take a towel with you! PPS Good luck |

Hi there The first thing you have to do is realise why you have put on weight. It's obvious really, and that's because you eat too much. Secondly you are living a sedentary lifestyle, and not doing enough exercise, for the required time. Here is a plan that you should adopt immediatey. You will lose a stone at least befor xmas. 1. Stop eating take aways. 2. Stop eating dairy produce. Milk, eggs, cheese. 3. Do not eat any food that has been prepared by someone else. (does this sound extreme?) it is supposed to. 4. Stop drinking alcohol for the time being. 5. Throw out snacks, white bread, sweets, puddings. 6. Realise that anything out of a packet or a tin is full of saturated fat. 7. Start thinking about exercise and get weights and protein pills out of your mind. While you are at it get gyms out of your mind because they are a fad, and a waste of money. 8. Get some running shoes and a friend that likes running. 9. You are what you eat. 10. Your diet from now on is white meat. Chicken and fish. Grilled for every meal with as much salad as you can eat. As much fruit as you want, and as many vegetables. 11. Plan your food in advance and remember. Do not eat prcessed food or anything that has been prepared by anyone else. 12. Take up running. 13. Start with half a mile and work up. 14. Remember 70 and 80 year olds run marathons. I am 49 and run about 35 - 40 miles per week. 15. Drink the occasional glass of red wine 16. DO NOT SMOKE You will lose weight. Fast. Enjoy. Mike |

I recently (two months back) lost a stone in 3 weeks by eating nothing but fruit during the day and a healthy meal in the evening. since then i've just been keeping my diet sensible/balanced and it's stayed off. Cheap option that may work for you. |

| Veteran Member | Re: Need to Lose Weight Before Xmas You definitely don't want to miss out on breakfast. Porridge oats is the way to go, not the instant stuff but the real whole oats porridge, don't worry you can still heat this up in a bowl in the microwave in a few minutes, so just as "instant".

I think people get a bit obsessed about what to eat and when. Remember, whether it is breakfast lunch or dinner, do not eat processed food, pies ready meals, take aways. They will kill you eventually. For breakfast eat fruit, wholemeal bread. Avoid dairy produce. Anything white will kill you. IT IS FAT. I call it WHITE DEATH. (Sugar, milk, cheese, eggs, white bread, fat, SALT.) Exercise. Great idea about a tredmill, but make sure you use it. Don't mess around and go on it once a week. Make sure you bang away at it every day. Try and adopt the saying that ECERCISE is NOT NEGOTIABLE. You have to do it every day. Perhaps have one day off. After a while you will miss not doing it, and that is when you will suddenly realise that you need to buy new trousers. TAKE THIS AWAY WITH YOU. DO NOT EAT ANYTHING THAT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY SOMEONE ELSE. THEY WILL HAVE INSERTED INTO IT, FAT, SUGAR, AND SALT TO MAKE IT TASTE BETTER (white death). ANYONE FANCY DOING A HALF MARATHON IN 3 MONTHS TIME? Mike |

Just wanted to add a few things myself. Everyone has things they do and don't do, and things they recommend and wouldn't recommend. Personally i want to stay away from running and treadmills. High impact on the knees. I'd like mine still working if i reach 70/80. Athletes seem to get problems with joints later in life, it's not something i want. You should be able to lose weight and keep it off by eating correctly and just generally being an active person. There are a lot of foods that are bad for us in various ways, but they are also good for us in some ways. The key to this is moderation. Chips are bad for you if you eat too much, but i hear there are certain things in them that are good for you to have every now and again. This staying away from anything white sounds a little drastic to me. I know our bodies aren't properly used to dairy products yet, but eggs are also good for you in moderation, and semi skimmed milk can't be bad for you if you only have it in your tea. Sugar i totally agree with, i haven't had any for years after conditioning myself to use sweeteners. Cut out the crap like crisps, takeaways and butter etc, and eat everything else in moderation while keeping yourself active. It is worth seeing a dietician. I think most doctors surgeries have a dietician on hand for answering questions. Above all, stay active. If you do like to watch a lot of TV, find some excercises you can do during intervals, or even during the programme itself. One thing i find offputting when weight training is counting your reps. If you're doing a few excercises while watching tv, chances are it'll take your mind off how many you're doing or got to do, and you'll do more this way. I may be right, i may be wrong, but you have to see what works for you as our bodies are different and will react differently to various excercises and diet strategies. |

Lifting weights contrary to what has been intimated is in fact a great way to lose weight. The more muscle you have the more calories you will expend, it is essentially your metabolism. When lifting weights your heart gets a real good workout, at anaerobic levels. There are a number of things for you to consider, and as you are not really that much over weight it shouldn't be too hard for you to achieve your goals. 1. Eat 6 times a day instead of 3. (Smaller portions, this will keep your metabolism up) Meals should have the right macro nutrient profile for your requirements(eg %carbs, protien, fat) Your protein shakes are a good way of making up a couple of the meals. 2. Take EFA daily. (Capsules don't really give you enough intake) Good choice would be Udo's Oil. Your body needs fat to give you energy and to absorb vitamins. Misconceptions are that all fat is bad. 3. Exercise.... as some people have already mentioned cardio. The easiest way to ensure your cardio is going to have effect is to get a heart rate monitor. These are not expensive and can be got from places like Argos etc. What this will do will enable you to keep your heart rate in the optimum zones for fat burning. Low intensity(aerobic) 60 - 75% 0f maximum heart rate. Or as already mentioned HIIT which will cycle your heart rate between LI(aerobic) and HI(anaerobic). If you can do your cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach eat approx 1hour afterwards. Don't overdo the cardio, 3-4 times per week at 30mins - 1hour per session. Combine with weights on alternate days. 4. Take pictures to track your progress, ignore the scales use the mirror. 5. Have a cheat day per week where you will eat excess of calories. This will satisfy any cravings and keep your body guessing. 6. Drink plenty of water. If you drink when you are thirsty its too late. 7. Don't skip meals. Your body will go into starvation mode and start to shut your metabolism down. 8. The Internet is a great tool, so much info. Here is a couple of sites to get you going. The first was a great inspiration for me. Check out John's transformation photos (pictures section) and if your jaw doesn't hit the floor I'll be amazed!! The second has thousands of articles ranging from training, food, supplementation, and calculators to work out calorific requirements based on your input. http://www.johnstonefitness.com/ http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/index.html Good luck let us know how you get on |

Except the sweeteners. They pretty much all contain Aspartame, which was banned around the world for ages. Hmmm, gain weight or get cancer. All the Diet coke and similar products should have been banned around 15 years ago, IMO. Although reports might say it's ok now (even then I have my doubts).

If you dont like eating early, then dont...if you are not waking up hungry it means you dont need to eat.... for lunch have a sandwich, doesnt have to be brown bread either, eat whatever bread you like..lol.....have ham one day, perhaps some cheese the next, tuna etc, just two slices of bread, the main filling and some lettuce or whatever salad veg you like.....even a dollop of normal salad cream wont hurt! for dinner just vary it, one day eat poultry, next eat red meat, another day go for fish etc......dont have a massive portion of it, just a few slices of breast, or a small rump steak (pan fry with no oil, lots of cracked pepper is good, just eat the meat not the fat) or some lean pork loin......with the meat have a couple different types of veg, one tasty and one necessary, ie mushrooms and peas or carrots and cabbage, whatever you like......and have something on the side such as a little mash, or a few boiled potatoes..... for dessert just a single serving of something tasty, could be fruit with a small dollop of clotted cream, or perhaps some fresh pancakes with lemon and a small sprinkle of sugar..... eat normal.....just make sure you get out in the open air and walk for a good mile each day, thats what, 15 minutes of your time?......lift some normal cheap plastic Argos 5kg dumbells in a few different ways, build up by doing 3 repetitions for a week, then 10, then 15.....likewise use a pair of cheap Argos ankle weights and lie on your back and lift each leg in turn holding it in the air for 5 seconds before letting down (dont drop! lower it under control), then lie on your side and repeat, then on your front and repeat.... that lot wont take you more than a half hour...do it each day or every other day...no need to spend on a gym...lol stick to that...and you'll lose weight AND tone up your muscles, wont build massive great Hulk type Pythons, but you will become stronger than you are without bulking up too much.... the food i mention, for a fully grown man, is a perfectly fine intake.....its what you output that will help you lose weight....dont go on diets, its more of a killer in the long run.... |

My weights are simply a few different bar-bells and dumb-bells. In this time i have lost in excess of 2 stone, gone from a 36 - 32 waist and even sport a 6 pack whilst feeling much better!!!!! I am 36, and really enjoy every minute of it My diet has vastly improved, i still drink coffee and have the occasional fry up but i do eat a vast majority of white meat, grains, salad, friut and fish which luckily i enjoy (but do find expensive) IMO it is as much to do with mental determination as all of the above. If you stick with it, you can become as fit as you like (within obvious age related restrictions) Last edited by Steve.EX; 21-11-2006 at 12:12 AM.

I'm 5'11" and currently weighing in at 13st 10lb with a 34 waist Maybe i could lose a few pounds more and yes i could be fitter but at the end of the day two months ago i hit the 15st barrier (my alarm weight) and realised i needed to do something. I had 3-4 weeks eating barely anything but fruit during the day and lost over a stone, i've since gone back to a more balanced diet and eat pretty much whatever i want but just in moderation. (Bacon sandwicheds being my particular weakness )No regular excercise i'm afraid but i have an 8yr old a 3yr old and a 3rd due in Feb so excercise time is limited i'm afraid. besides i stopped smoking 9 weeks ago so am happy to still be below 30 stone! Good luck with the weight loss Delboy but just make sure the route you take is soemthing that fits in with your lifestyle and isn't too extreme or you will just put it back on again within months |

The more muscle you have, the more energy your body will burn. Do plenty of reps at lower weights, this will tone your muscles.I'm assuming you DON'T actually want to lose weight, but actually LOSE fat? Have 7 small meals a day, cut out the crap, like biscuits, cakes, crisps, processed foods, alcohol, white bread, white pasta. This cut your intake of crap fuel into your body. Take exercise 4 times a week, something that'll make you sweat, like rowing, badminton, squash. If you don't like the gym (like me!) then do something else, like dance classes. This will burn the flab. |

You should really eat non prepared food. Eating milk cheese and yogurt is a must for me. IT IS EXCESS CARBOHYDRATE THAT MAKES YOU FAT!!!!! You can eat as much cheese as you want. It will not make you fat. I consume roughly half a bottle of extra virgin olive oil per week (with corn thins) and my weight remains constant. (I am 5' 9" and weigh 10 3/4 stone). Eating live yogurt in big quantities also is a total must. If your stomach and intestines are in good order you will loose weight and feel better. I'd consider going vegetarian as well. You will feel better as meat is very hard for the body to digest. Excercise is key. Do something everyday. It will make you feel alive. Avoid gyms. Go out power walking with an ipod and get some dumbbells and do weights at home while watching a film or tv. Gyms are generally full of yuppies imo. If you want to get really fit you must run. NO PAIN NO GAIN. |

| Member | Re: Need to Lose Weight Before Xmas I've recently lost 1 1/2 stone over 3 months by increased excercise and watching what I eat. I do a mix of cycling running and light weights, they're things I'm finding I enjoy - I couldn't do it otherwise - I think this is important as otherwise it becomes a chore. Plus excerising at 60% of max for me feels like nothing, I would try to push that (maybe not straight off), you'll spend time thinking you are doing something but you're actually not working out much at all. Eating wise I watch what I eat, I know that I use about 2800 calories a day on average and I make sure that I eat less than that. I haven't cut out milk cheese carbs or anything, I just eat less of them. I cut down on fat, as anything with a large amount of fat has loads of calories. Just being aware of the number of calories being consumed and making sure that I don't eat more than my max seems to work. Plus excerceise increases the 2800 needed. I've cut down on booze, 3 booze free days a week and then on the days I have a few drinks, these have calories so just be aware. This has been in no way regimented, but when you get used to it you figure out how many calories are going in and just be sensible. Plus fruit and veg (in general) have a low number of calories so you can eat lots (potatoes are the main exception here) |

Also if you run like a gorilla then, yes, you will get joint problems. That runners get joint problems is a total myth. I've been running for 10 years and am preparing for my 3rd marathon and my joints have never been better (wood touching now).
