Anybody successfully claimed compensation for a delayed train journey?

Went to London on Friday and the train was 2 hours late getting onto Kings Cross (from Leeds).

Anybody managed to claim any compensation back for their trip? Or is it a complete waste of time even trying.

The bigger irony is that I missed my return train (by a minute) and had to stump up an extra £70 for the priviledge of catching the next train home The thieving robbing

Where's the incentive to go green and use more public transport

Compensation should be easy to claim - indeed most train firms have a pre-printed form for such eventualities.

With regards to your additional costs, I'd write to customer services of the train firm in question and explain that due to the delay in arriving in London you were unable to make your pre-booked train home... I have successfully claimed for taxi fares (although not as much as £70) where I've missed connecting trains due to delays..

If your a GoldCard Annual season ticket holder with South Eastern Trains your not entitled to any refund. The inconvenience caused (if any) is reflected in the following years ticket price.

However, if you purchase dailey/weekly or monthly then you can get a refund if the journey is delayed by an hour (I think).

---

Tube journey's in London are far easier to obtain refunds if the journey is (15min) late or delayed, fill form in and check will be in post within 28days.

Above delay times may have changed since I last looked into refunds.....

---

SETrains are terrible though!!

I have a season ticket with First Capital Connect, and they even have a compensation form which you can fill out online! Successfully claimed back 4 times this year for delayed trains. They will only pay out, if your train is delayed by more than 30 mins.

Do they refund your ticket in full, part or what?

It's a variable percentage of the ticket price.

Re: Anybody successfully claimed compensation for a delayed train journey?

Thanks guys

It was a one-off trip. What gets me though... is that it's ok for them to be laissez-faire when they are late (whether it's their fault or not) but if the customer is late they get their pants pulled down and royally stuffed.

So I missed my train... so why could I not just pay the same fair on the next available train? I accept that they could (potentially) have sold my missed train seat to someone else at an earlier date. But it's not as if those seats on the next train are going to be used by anyone else is it?

It's nothing more than sheer greed and profiteering.

Re: Anybody successfully claimed compensation for a delayed train journey?

On a GNER train (Scotland-London) I was on which was delayed by 75 minutes the staff actually gave out compensation forms to all the passengers as they got off. I got 25% of my fare back - but as it was a single I had bought well in advance it only amounted to about five quid. Still, it all adds up...

Re: Anybody successfully claimed compensation for a delayed train journey?

Virgin are quite good in this respect - we got a train back to London from Newcastle which was delayed by over an hour (due to only an under-powered engine being available) - they went down the train giving out compensation forms - we got back 50% of the return price - so we basically got fully compensated for the delayed part of the journey - the refund was of the type that could be used on any UK rail trip for one year.

They were also rounding up all the people who had airport connections and were phoning ahead to book pre-paid taxis to get them to the airport.

I was also delayed on Eurostar by about an hour - they handed out a London-Paris single ticket to everyone as they got off the train.
