Strange Pets.

Not really a pet, but a superb hunter to work with.

Has anyone ever kept an exotic/strange creature?

Re: Strange Pets.

I keep Australian Blue Lobsters.
Technically freshwater crayfish but still an entertaining pet.

A lot easier to keep than that beauty. Is she a Hawk of some sort ?

Re: Strange Pets.

She was a Harris' Hawk mylo. Sadly died a few years ago. We had some good days together.

I've kept a few birds of prey, but she was special. A very good killer who could deal with
fully grown Hare no problem.

When she died, I was gutted.

I keep finches now.

Any pics of the lobsters?

Re: Strange Pets.

an old pic of the female in the foreground with the male climbing over the bogwood. He got to be big enough to eat, unfortunately she thought so as well. She's now massive and I've managed to stop her eating three of the babies they had.

Re: Strange Pets.

have a friend who has had several harris hawks and must admit it was the greatest thing to watch. the females were great for rabbit - hares but to watch the males going for birds( crows pigeons phesant) was outstanding.
how did you find new hunting laws or were you not that bothered and hunted anyway???

is that the young ones in the pipe?

Don't they lay eggs and carry them on their tail?

It is indeed one the babies. They lay hundreds of eggs and incubate them under the tail.

When I was at Junior school lots of years ago, we had a goat called Polly. It's one
of the most evil animals I've ever come across.

Any pics of yours Jakal?

Re: Strange Pets.

Not at the mo but I'll load one tomorrow. I also have peacocks - they look a bit sad at this time of year as they loose their tales. That Hawk was stunning, such noble looking birds.

Only as long as you don't introduce her to Johnny Thunder as he shot his last mate:

Cool Re: Strange Pets.

I once kept an exotic bird but I had to get rid, was costing me too much money always wanting new clothes, and always looking in shoe shops.

Re: Strange Pets.

At university I lived upstairs from a girl who kept a snake (boa constrictor, but only a little one). Quite fun to handle (the snake, not the girl, alas) though she kept joking it would escape and end up wandering in and out of the toilets. I think a few of her neighbours got freaked but she never got kicked out or told to get rid of the snake.

A friend of mine used to keep snakes. He had 2 walls full of vivariums in the spare bedroom.
Put off quite a few prospective girlfriends that did.

I think they do eat grasshoppers and crickets in the wild (webs are close to the ground in long grass). We catch flies in the garden and put them in the tank. Seems to satisfy.
