Art 4 Arts sake or taking the P?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6075450.stm

An artist set up an exhibition of basically... nothing; a completly bare gallery and asked people to go along. You are invited to view the empty space or "installation" and recall other exhibitions from other times and places. From the news item on the BBC a spokeperson from the gallery states ....."She said participants in the exhibition could perform "a seemingly impossible feat: summoning up remote spaces - through memory, body, speech and movement - reduplicating these spaces, so that they exist at two locations simultaneously." [A bit like Dr Who I guess?]. Anyroad..

Funding for the exhibition came from the Arts Council in Wales.

Do you think this is Art or do you need a picture in front over you?
Do you think it's worth the money?

I had quite a few installations like that when we first moved into our house - little did I know it would be worth more empty than full

Not my cup of tea...

Re: Art 4 Arts sake or taking the P?

I was in Cardiff and so went along .. never been to the Chapter Arts Centre. I know this sounds odd; I don't "do" art centres but although there were only a view people in the exhibiton there was loads of people in the centre and it seemed quite a lively place.
In the exhibition one nice Italian lady walked and talked with me in the "space", explained the concept and it was a pleasant expierence.
In one sense this controversial exhibition certainly got me there when I wouldn't normally have gone - I may go back for other "events".
See attached for the peeps I was chatting to ...concept is on the back wall - not a completly bare gallery then.

I suppose if it gets people away from the TV and actively discussing and having to think about it then it's a good thing, not sure if it's £50,000 worth of a good thing though.

That was my thinking - but the £50k was for a range of things including this. TBO how much could this have cost to set up?

I only went really to say I'd been and then slag it off - so went with that in mind. However, I did change my positon a bit when I was talked throught the "concept" when I got there. I did think that if they had billed it as simply a "lets have a get togther and talk about Art" rather than saying it was an exhibition it might have still achieved its aim but without the fuss. Still I kinda liked it (and it was free to enter) and I woudn't have gone otherwise. TBF everyone seemed so nice - quite refreshing really.

I was going to say that if it did cost £50k for that they should have got a quote from a few more companies.
