General Chat.. worth the hastle?

Morning folks!

Ive been a member of the forums for sometime now and I have got to know some great people on here and have met some of you as well.... and got a bit drunk in the process!!

Anyway- I havent been as active on here over the last few months and I have just been getting back into it.

I used to love the General Chat side of the site- you could ask some serious questions or just have a laugh etc.... but my God hasnt it changed!!

I dont think that i have seen so many arguements before or people taking things too far. I mean... i logged on today and the first thread i looked at was the one regarding Income Tax. My company deals with tax so I thought I might be able to help- but as per usual a few 'posters' have jumped in and sounded their opinion- and everyone is entitled to their own opinion- but it bears no relevance to the originals posters question!! And this is only one example.

What is happening with everyone or is it just me that thinks this way?

Cheers

G

I blame Gorden Brown and the media

He robs us of our money, and the media remind us everyday how bad life is.

Re: General Chat.. worth the hastle?

General Chat has always been the same and has always been a mixture of interesting threads, useful advice and utter crap.

The names have changed over the years but the format has remained much as it always has done

I think you'll find that's the same in any forum. What's better (and why I stay, and not just on the chat forum) here, is that common sense normally prevails in most of the threads, and while some get out of hand, they don't even get close to the bunfights that go on elsewhere.

This is down to two reasons:-

1) the moderation here is normally very good.
2) verbal abuse is not tolerated here, either by stuart, the moderators or the users. In the former cases it's nipped in the bud, in the latter people either drop the thread or report posts that get nasty. Very rarely do threads get really nasty as a result.

In the first case, yes, that sounds sucky, but on some forums the moderators do let threads get way out of hand, and then people get vicious.

Second, as the moderators normally get in very quick here, then bunfights just don't happen. I've seen too many threads get really nasty elsewhere, so that's a good thing too.

Basicaly Mason, yes as Ian says, some of the threads can get bogged down in stupid arguments, but compared to other forums this place is a haven of calm and considered posts. Whether thats a reflection of how bad some forums are, or how good this one is is up to you to decide.

Re: General Chat.. worth the hastle?

I've come back to the forums after a break of about six months and nothing's changed in General Chat. The occasional controversial thread mixed with the informative and inane - just as it should be, and always has been . Like IanJ says - the name's may have changed but the content stays the same.

Re: General Chat.. worth the hastle?

i think the general chat can have a real use on a forum like this. i'll try and explain. on a day to day basis, how often do you really have a requirement to checkout an AV forum? if all your gear is working, you don't really need to keep checking online.

i think the less "AV" forums like general chat and discussing tv shows, even spots and games, helps keep the visitors to the site more regular, which means more people checking the sites on a regular basis, thus more people available to checkout and answer queries and requests from others

for example, there are a few forums i've looked at which are really great, but nothing there to keep me checking them out regularly, so i probably miss out on a lot of great stuff. likewise folks posting questions and getting no answers. but i see here a lot of folks seem to checkout the sites pretty regularly, thus even the strangest question or request has an answer PDQ, and many folks on here seem to be pretty knowledgable about stuff

sure there are posts that are perhaps pointless and meaningless and a waste of time, but if you don't like general chat, just ignore em and leave em be. its not like there are 100s or even dozens of stupid posts in general chat each day, as that could be a pain

Re: General Chat.. worth the hastle?

Hi,

Interesting topic this. I was thinking along similiar lines. Not just here but in general, but do peoples fuses seem a lot shorter than they used to be? Internet, mobile phones, road traffic (rage), stress/pressures of work. Football, frustrations, relationships.Reality tv.... I think I'm turning into my parents. I've got this urge to say..fings ain't what they used to be!!

Is life just too quick?

Wine-candles-bath-reeeeeelax!!

It's as quick (or as slow) as you make it.

I have colleagues and friends who say they never have enough time, rushing here and there, driving like crazy. Why?
I like to take my life at a steady pace. I get just as much (if not more) done by taking control of my life.

Re: General Chat.. worth the hastle?

Dont get my wrong guys- I wouldnt walk away from AV forums just because I feel like like this- I get more out of it other than general chit chat.

You are probably right tho- i suppose you just have to move with the times.

Maybe im just out of touch. Time to get stuck back in again!!
