Any Dentists on here?

Had a Lower Wisdom tooth removed on Friday morning just under a local and from the minute the Anaesthetic wore off a few hours later the pain across the whole side of my face has been evil.

Pain has been constant and runs from my ear and eye socket all the way down too my lower jaw, feels similar to when I had a dental abcess a few years back only 10x worse!

I've been stuffing pain killers every four hours all weekend and found only soluble asprin or my kids liquid Nurofen stuff seems to even take the edge off it and then only for an hour or so.

I can't go another night with no sleep, is this normal after a Wisdom tooth extraction???

Re: Any Dentists on here?

Ugh, i feel for you mate. Im no dentist, but I'd say its pretty normal as the wisdom teeth are sunk pretty deep in there. If you only had a local in your dentists then the pain is'nt from the actual tooth coming out - but more from the wrangling and pulling on your jaw that they would have to do to get it out. Id give it another day, then if no better give em a ring, but its gonna be sore pal, they should have told you that - but typical dentists probably wanted a bit more cash to tell you that..

Re: Any Dentists on here?

Had two of mine (lower) out under a general anaesthetic. They had to dislocate my jaw to do it. Hurt for a few days afterwards.

Sympathies!

Re: Any Dentists on here?

Had a lower one out myself a couple of months ago, to be honest I had a lot of swelling but the pain really wasn't too bad. If the pain is as bad as it sounds I'd get it looked at just to make sure it's healing ok.

Re: Any Dentists on here?

Your dental surgery should have an out of hours service which caters for situations like this, give them a call. If they don't you primary care trust will have a dental out of hours service available, try them.

Re: Any Dentists on here?

Cheers for the sympathies

Spoke to the dentist and best they could suggest was take the maximum dose of Nurofen every four hours (600mg) and go in again tomorrow if it's no better.

I'll just have to keep myself dosed up and see how it goes i guess.

I know it might sound strange but "Teething Powder" might help a bit with the pain.

My wife had one out a while ago, but never suffered the ammount of pain you seem to be having.

I thought a dentist could give you a prescription for something a bit stronger to help with the pain.

Re: Any Dentists on here?

My temporary crown fell out last friday and I managed to0 swallow it I phoned mysdentist up sauturday and shw wasnt in so I left a message requesting an appointment to have new temp fitted. So far she hasnt rung back . Now I can live with the discomfort( mainly hot and cold) until my next already set appointment when the crown proper will be fitted but I dont know whether I should press for a temp to be fitted in the meantime in order to avoid any possible infection, The stump feels very vulnerable I will ring tomorrow I think.

Could try rubbing teething gel around socket to numb slightly, also a salt mouth rinse to help with healing. (from ex dental nurse)

I would just go straight back to the dentist and tell them that the pain is too much. Just wait till they sort you out. Also if you pop down to the local fish mongers first and get a really smelly fish, that should speed up your waiting time

Re: Any Dentists on here?

for the pain till you can get it sorted, get a pack of Syndol.....seriously, it seems to hit the pain in the head areas very quickly and well....when i had severe toothache a couple years ago i dosed up on it, 2 tablets at a go every 4 hours over the weekend, my whole head was throbbing from the pain untill 20 mins after taking the first 2, after that it was just a numb ache...

A mate of mine swallowed a crown. Spent the next 24 hours siving. Found it and had it refitted. The dentists face must have been a picture.

I would get a temp as soon as you can.

With regards to the pain from your wisdom tooth extraction Uridium I have heard of people suffering very bad pain after wisdom teeth extractions. Suggest you try and get the dentist to get you some stronger pain killers. Paras and Ibro are pathetic for this kind of pain. Alternatively get a doctor to prescribe them. I have in the past for tooth ache. Hope you sort it. Been there, not nice. Best of luck.

Re: Any Dentists on here?

If you say that the only thing that helps is asprin and ibruprofen then that sounds like either bruising from the extraction or perhaps an infection because both of those are anti inflamitory drugs. Unless they were being extracted speciffically because of an infection then I would guess it's because of bruising. Many wisdom teeth are actually knitted into the bone and you can cause a bit of damage to the bone during that kind of extraction. A bruised bone can hurt like hell.
Try some proper ibuprofen and if it doesn't get any better then go back to the dentist because dentists have prescription pads and are able to prescribe quite strong drugs.

Re: Any Dentists on here?

I had a couple of impacted wisdom teeth taken out by the dentist under a local many years ago. One of them was quite painful for a day or two but was bearable but the other caused me a lot of pain, with my cheek swelling up and the area becoming infected too.

You have my sympathies as I can still remember the pain

Re: Any Dentists on here?

When I had a abcess deep in a root, I found the only thing to numb the pain was to take Ibuprofen or Asprin every 2 hours. Start with Asprin, then 2 hours later Iburprofen, then Asprin, etc etc.

Yes you can take them at the same time as they are different types of painkiller. If you want confirmation of this ask any Pharmacist/GP etc

Re: Any Dentists on here?

I've still got my wisdom teeth and I was lucky that they came through with very little problem.

I have a unreasonable fear of Dentists (I can't watch that scene in Marathon man where Dustin's character gets his teeth drilled without closing my eyes) As a result I have not been near a dentist for years. But I have not had any tooth pain.

A friend at uni had 2 out at the same time and suffered to begin with - he found smoking cannabis the only way to get through it - he said it worked!

*I am not advocating the use of illegal substances in lieu of proper painkillers - just a remedy I have seen.

Seriously tho - Co-dyramol is a good pain killer - my other half had some after having her tonsils out and it really did the trick - think it is prescription only, but you should be able to get your doctor to prescribe it no problem.

Re: Any Dentists on here?

For the pain, take ibuprofen and paracetamol in a staggered pattern. The paracetamol, take 1g every 6 hours. Ibuprofen can be taken 400mg three times a day.

Take the paracetamol first and the ibuprofen (nurofen etc) after 3 hrs. Taking them like this will ensure that it works all round.

Use corsodyl mouthwash to rinse. Make sure there is no pus coming out of the socket. If there is pus, return to the dentist immediately as you have a dry socket infection and might need antibiotics (if you have not been given them already).

The pain, bleeding and swelling from an tooth extraction can last upto 72hrs

I had a circumsicion a couple of years ago. Pain was mental. People compare it to
having wisdom teeth out. Loads of alcohol sorted out the pain.
