My rabbit is being harassed by a cat. Help?

My cute little rabbit runs freely in the back garden (Though I lock her up at night).

I saw a ginger cat corner her a while ago, and I ran outside and the rabbit flew into the house and hid in the furthest corner of my lounge. After that I ensured that I didnt let her out much unless I was around the garden, but felt sorry for her.

Since then I have let her out a bit, but I can tell that the rabbit is getting harassed because now she is so jumpy everytime I appear around the corner.

A minute ago I just found the cat with a paw in the rabbit hutch fishin around. Luckily the rabbit was around the corner by my back door.

Any idea how I can keep the cat at bay? Dont want to make the rabbit run around a tiny run, or use a sonic thing that may upset other dogs in the road,.. or my budgies.

My rabbit is easy prey.. because she is deaf

Use a super soaker style water gun, go for the cat whenever you see it

Re: My rabbit is being harassed by a cat. Help?

isnt there something about cats that they are considered a pest because they arent kept in the home? i know a cat isnt always seen in the same way as a dog, yes it might belong to someone but its still a pest. You wouldnt allow someone to let thier dog into your garden for no reason. I know its cruel but i feel like airgunning the cats that try for my carp (Even though steve, my big ghost carp could easily take down a cat)
some warning shots to the cat might help

LOL.. the sentry turrets seem a great idea for my own amusement. However I really want something that will help out while I am still not around.
Need to research the ultrasonic... dont want it upsetting my budgies, or the rabbit. Although it appears deaf to normal sounds I guess its possible that it can hear ultrasonic?

I've heard that Tiger Dung can be used to keep cats at bay (or is this an urban myth?). That's if there's a zoo nearby, though it's debatable whether you'd want to use your own garden after spreading some of this around.

But consider the effect on bunny, it's bad enough having to watch outy for a domestic cat that might pounce without having heart palpitations at the thought of a tiger lurking

Re: My rabbit is being harassed by a cat. Help?

A family member uses those little plastic toy snakes. Keeps the cats out of her garden a treat.

All she has to do is move it once a day.

Not sure if it would affect the rabbit though?

Re: My rabbit is being harassed by a cat. Help?

Agree with the Supersoaker suggestion - cats really do run a mile especially after you have got them the first time

Something I did get awhile back that has been very effective has been a dedicated cat deterant - it's just a 2D black cat but with reflective staring eyes. Move it around the garden every day or so and the cats do keep clear of it.

Next could you not get some removeable netting? I appreciate this wouldn't look very nice but if you could support it with canes and rig it around the rabit run upto a height of 2m or so then that should stop the cat.

Finally can you trace the cat owner? Many are fairly responsible and I'm sure if they know the cat is causing problems they may offer to put a bell around it's neck.

Re: My rabbit is being harassed by a cat. Help?

Just starve the rabbit for a while and let its teeth and claws grow long and sharp... It'll sort out its own cat problem AND get some self confidence and stop being scared all the time! Acting like a rabbit caught in the headlamps....

Re: My rabbit is being harassed by a cat. Help?

Thanks for more suggestions. I have previously tried netting, but I didnt really have dedicated poles. In the end the whole thing collapsed and the rabbit was managing to find its way out under the net because I couldnt peg it all to the ground at close enough intervals.
I guess I can have another go.
Will also buy a supersoaker. Running a bucket of water is too slow, and is also hard to get the pesky cat with.
I dont know who owns the cat, the houses back onto each other

Going to have a look at runs as well, but I think netting would be good if I can get it to work effectively.

Re: My rabbit is being harassed by a cat. Help?

Just scatter orange peels around the garden, hidden in stragetic locations.

FYI cats despise orange peels.

Well all the best (especially for the rabbit)

Maybe if netting doesn't work you could look at chicken (meshed) wire? Readily available from garden centres...
