look at this bit of junk mail i got

ORIENT BANK PLC
Orient House, 84 Ajose Street
Victoria Island, Lagos-Nigeria.

Dear Friend,

My name Donald Ogbe, Credit/Treasury Bill Manager, ORIENT BANK PLC.
I wish to bring to your hearing a business proposal of which will make anyone worried and apprehensive but I am assuring you not to be afraid, as all will be well at the end of this endeavor. I do beg your pardon to accept my unsolicited email to you since we have not had any dealings with each other before this business is genuine and is 100% risk free.

We discovered an unclaimed sum of USD$12.5m(Twelve Million Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollar) in an account belonging to one DR. GEORGE BRUMLEYof our international customers, who died along with his entire family in a plane crash that took place in Kenya, East Africa, the LATE DR. GEORGE BRUMLEY, a citizen of Atlanta, United States of America but resident here in Nigeria, West Africa and a physician.

You can visit the website below for more information about the Plane Crash and the tragic death of the deceased and his entire family, Late DR GEORGE BRUMLEY.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/africa...ash/index.html

Since we got information about his death we have been expecting his next of kin
to come over and claim his money. Unfortunately, neither the family nor the relation has appeared to claim this money. We cannot release this money unless somebody applies as the next of kin or relation to the deceased. Our banking guidelines indicated that if such money remained unclaimed for a period of Six (6) years, it would be transferred into the ORIENT BANK PLC Treasury as unclaimed fund.

Another officer and I in the department now decided to transfer this money into
your account as the next of kin or relation of the deceased for easy collection
to you as the next of kin. nobody is coming for it and we don't want this money
to go back into the bank treasury as an unclaimed fund. All I need is your full maximum support and cooperation to enable us achieve this transaction within 15 days and I guarantee that this will be executed under a legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of the law.

Please, If you are interested in this transaction, kindly forward to me the following information
through my alternative email address (donald.ogbe2006@yahoo.com) full name/address, private telephone and fax numbers to enable us commence all the
legal documents immediately.

Waiting for your urgent response.

Kindest regards,
Mr.Donald Ogbe.

Then why not give it to one of their relatives/friends? Geez if the writers of these had half a brain, they may have a chance of working more often

Why does everybody assume it's a scam just because it's from Nigeria?

Is it because it is the scam capital of the world?

Does anybody know someone who has actually fell for one of these?

Call scambusters,funny site.

Would you really? And would you send the couple of thousand pounds they would ask you for up front so they can release the documents needed to release the funds or for some other legal reason they invent?

The scary thing is people do fall for these scams. Lots of people.

Anyone ever been to 419 eater? The stuff they do to these guys almost makes you feel sorry for them.....almost. Some of the phone calls are very funny too.

No, of course not!

I was just being silly.

This guy who runs 419eater goes to tremendous trouble to get mocked-up Western Union documentation and the like to support his baiting of the scammers, and has actually got money off them in their efforts to ensnare him. I'd love to give the baiting a go, but don't have the time.

I've tried it once or twice with scammers on E-Bay - there was a guy a few months ago who was trying to flog a pair of ProAc floorstanders, and he was advertising them as "Free Ship". I asked him several questions about the free ship - how big was it, where was it berthed etc. and got a couple of e-mails back from him, but other than wasting a few minutes of his time, reporting him to E-bay on at least 6 occassions, and finally e-mailing him to tell him his cover was blown it went no further. Not seen him trying to flog those ProAcs since though, so a result of some sort.
