Parking across driveways

Some muppet has parked accross the driveway to my house (an entry runs down beside my house).

I don't know who it is...what is the law on this kind of thing?

Re: Parking across driveways

Don't think there's a lot you can do, other than putting a dirty great big sign under his wipers saying "PLEASE DO NOT PARK HERE - ACCESS REQUIRED 24 HOURS".

Add something in there about it needed for a disabled person. Might make them feel guiltier.

Re: Parking across driveways

Just been looking it up on Google and it seems it is indeed illegal - at least on the few council websites I've stumbled on.

Need more info.

Gonna watch out the window and spark him later...

I'm assuming you have a dropped kerb in which case Its obstruction and I believe its an offence if they prevent you from leaving your drive way but not if it stops you from entering. This is I think because stopping you from exiting your driveway and thus onto the public highway is an obstruction of the highway and is an offence that can be dealt with be the Police or more usually now the local council.

Re: Parking across driveways

I'm on 24 hour standby as a computer engineer for the M.o.D and the number of times I've been blocked in is ridiculous. I finally convinced the local council to paint a white line across the entrance to the (three) garages. It doesn't make any difference. the 'old bill' aren't interested and the local council are only available 9-5. If I leave a note it just seems to encourage them. Luckily I've got away with it so far but if I get a call I think I might be tempted to push them out of the way with my Jeep Grand Chreokee 4.7V8

Simple answer, deflat the tires. They won't do it again after that.

Re: Parking across driveways

If you need to go out, set the alarm off and see who comes out. Check with your neighbours if it's a thick visitor. If no joy, you could always ask a mate to come round with his car/van/truck and drag it out of the way. Failing that, just smash the window, release the handbrake and move the car. Job done.

I did this once. I ended up becoming mates with bloke. That was 19 years ago and we're still good mates to this day...

Re: Parking across driveways

I was blocked in and needed to get somewhere quick. Phoned the police and they were more than happy to have the car moved . They told me it was illegal to block a car in a driveway.

You could always invite a clamping and removal company to enforce the illegal parking, I don't know if you have to pay them or do they just take it out in the fines they levy.

I think regulations have been broken only if they have parked across a dropped kerb.

Yes you are right, Ealing council charged us £800 for having the dropped kerb outside our drive

It's normally down to the local council, in Trafford it is an offence to park either partley or fully on the pavement.

If a vehicle is causing an obstruction (ie to pedestrians, prams, wheelchair uses etc) then the police can remove the vehicle at the owners expense.

Technically parking anywhere on the highway, pavement included, can be considered obstruction but the Police don't enforce it unless it causes a nuisance or endangers other road users, pedestrians.

We have problems with drives been blocked because of a doctors surgery. The police don't bother turning up before they move here either.

Whenever a car parks over a drive, the residents move cars and park them so close to the offending car that it can't get out. A lot of hassle but worth it watching them flapping about as they can't move.

Most modern cars will have no trouble at all moving a stationary car parked against them.

Re: Parking across driveways

Lets not bash the bobbies here, they have much more important things to deal with than parking enforcement. Unfortunatley there are not enough on a shift to deal with 'quality of life' jobs (Youth Causing Annoyance, Parking Problems etc) , which I would love to see happening and to which every tax payer would expect but until the goverment allow funding for more officers instead of investing in PCSO's it will never happen.

Sorry for the rant.

How big is the car? most small hatch backs can be lifted up off their rear wheels enough to trundle them out of the way

Get it towed/pushed (by someone you trust who owns a Land Rover/4X4) enough to get in/out of the drive way. The onus is on the owner to prove you did it. Hope it's not a lunatic who's going to cause you trouble.
