Re: jehovahs and the mormons knocking on the door

My mate always answers the door by telling them he's had a transplant and blood transfusion (which is true)

They always run a mile and he says it's never failed

Re: jehovahs and the mormons knocking on the door

Answer the door dressed like this

Have a few moths flying around behind you and a small white toy-dog running around your ankles - say "Get down Precious" a few times.

They will leave your doorstep.

They don't agree with giving blood etc etc. The other one you could use is to say "Sorry, my parents are out giving blood"

CRACKING!

jw's don't believe in blood transfusions, even if your young daughter gets knocked over by a car and ends up in hospital

i don't know much about the mormons, but if you research the jehovas witnesses, some of the stuff is pretty shocking. in an early copy of the watchtower from the 50s there was a prominent article about targetting blacks as they were weaker willed and more likely to be persuaded to convert. today, probably the majority of jw's in america are black. michael jacksons family were jw's and he somehow managed to leave, which is no mean feat. they do everything they can to stop people leaving. i know a few baptized folks, and a few who have managed to leave, and would neve go back

in getting rid of someone at the door, there's no need to be rude howeve, just politely say you aren't interested. there's no need to offend someone's religeos beliefs no matter what you think of them. personally i find there can be some benefit to organised religeon for a small number of people, such as the sick, the elderly, etc, but not for the marjority, and personally i would like to see an end to organised religeon, however that isn't going to happen easily. remember most wars in history have had religous reasons behind them, and the reasons why certain countrys mailnly follow certain religeons can be even more shocking. just look into the reasons why king james iv arranged for the most famous and widely read translation of the bible, it was to put the fear of god into people to try and stop him being overthrown

If i`ve got a spare hour or so i tend to give them my "Space Man" theory. Anything they try to sell you, i just say thats all down to the space men. It really frustrates the hell outa them. The longest so far i think was about an hour and twenty mins before they gave up

Re: jehovahs and the mormons knocking on the door

I remember at uni some of these people came knocking and I had a chat with them for about half an hour. I was bored and they eventually gave up and didn't come back.

I went into Alan Partidge mode and I was able to bore them away

I don't go uninvited to their door an interupt their live's and try to persuade them to think the same way I do. I don't do that for a reason, because I think it is wrong. I expect the same curtesy from the rest of the world and if they can't give me that curtesy then its open season on them!

Re: jehovahs and the mormons knocking on the door

I'm quite severely disabled so when the door bell rang it took a bit of time and effort to get to the door. When i saw who was there i was so annoyed i blurted out without thinking" Oh for Christs sake, bugger off!!" It got rid them pretty promptly, but afterwards the irony of what i'd said gave me some amusement.

Re: jehovahs and the mormons knocking on the door

Lol quite a personal thread for me this ,i was brought up as a witness from the age of 8 onwards by my parents who were in fact ordinary people ,mum was a housewife my old man was had just been accepted into the marines ,when unbeknown to my dad my mother had been having the witnesses round .

Anyway to cut a long story short my dad never went into the marines and became a witness along with my mum ,one minute we used to celebrate christmas and birthdays and the next we didn't .

I was no longer allowed to go into school assemblies due to the religeous nature of them back in the eighties ,very bizarre .

On the the whole the various families members never really said anything .

School for me was a big change ,when your the only person stood outside assembly ,you do feel a right ****.Obviously alot of kids were nasty and people took the **** constantly ,i can remember stood waiting in a queue at junior school waiting for the christmas dinner ,and receiving taunts about not being allowed to have any christmas dinner .

At sixteen i moved out of the house and stopped being a witness and went on to lead my own life .

One thing i would say is that my mother always said that them two becoming witness most definatly saved there marriage ,as my dad was and still is a complete violent nutter ,not to my mother mind .

From my experience witnesses in general come from all walks of life ,you do get those that are more zealous than others and come across as being religious geeks .But there's those that are charaters like my brothers brother in law who is an ex armed robber and looks like he's done ten rounds with mike tyson everyday of his life.Certainly not somebody you would tell to FO in a hurry .

Anyway if anyone has any reasonable questions ,i may be able to dispell some myths.

I obviously still see my some old witness mates i have and still know more or less whats going on these days .

My Dad told me about a book he was reading about the Mormons and apparantly two did come over to Yorkshire to do a bit of converting but went back as atheists which I thought was pretty funny.

Re: jehovahs and the mormons knocking on the door

Mormons tend to target women as they feel they are more suceptible to persuasion than men. They also target certain class groups, and other faiths. Catholics in particular.

Some of their beliefs are very dubious indeed, not withstanding the usual one that only they will be 'saved'. Their central message, in that Christ visited the US (the land of promise) is also highly dodgy, in that it claims that they are therefore the 'chosen', and of course there is not a shred of evidence to support this. They are fiercly patriachal, not keen on 'free thought', homosexuals, or their children not following a doctrinaire lifestyle.

They also, despite their relatively low political profile, are one of the biggest contributers to the Republican party, and donated huge amounts to Bush's last campaign. In this country they are linked to all the groups detirmined to interfere in terms of our 'morale' life. Ie mediawatch etc. They also have strong links with the Conservative party.

Luckily, I can get rid of them fairly easily, I just tell them that a member of my family (indirect I hasten to add) is a member. If they can't convert me, forget it.

Joho's, I just tell them I'm Jewish. That sends them scuttling, and they give me black looks now everytime they see me.......

There is some contention over their right to call themselves a 'religion' as their 'holy book' is not regarded as strictly 'kosher' (no pun). Although all Holy books are of course a matter of faith rather than fact, there are many senior Christians (and lay experts) in the US who've pulled the 'Book of Mormon' to bits, and in fact declared them to be 'unChristian'. Hence the thoughts about 'downgrading' them.

There's a couple of interesting entries here about the founder of the Mormons. Sounds like he was the perfect person to start up a religion

EDIT: This is just a guess but I think that the first one is by a Mormon and the second one isn't.

Re: jehovahs and the mormons knocking on the door

i don't have a problem with them knocking on my door at all. I politley tell them I am not interested and they politley leave. I have never had someone being pushy and rude, and after all they're here to help you (in thier eyes) not hurt you.

Not really. It's just I have a long standing relationship with some of them, which gives me an insight into things I really don't like, and I find really quite worrying. That doesn't mean I don't like them as people, because I do.

They are quite often people who have had a bad time in life, been vunerable, and the church 'saved them', or better still their relatives. The fact that a good psychiatrist could have done the same without the baggage, and lifelong commitment to a pack of lies is beside the point.
