use the "propper2 network connection not USB and buy a router instead. you can have both machines wired with cat5 cables.

Question is here, what are you connecting the modem to when using Ethernet? You must be using a wireless router already, otherwise wireless will never work. If so, can you describe how everything is connected please? Hopefully, we can track down the source of the problem for you.

ok cool i have a motorola surfboard cable modem, now that plugs into my routher and the router then plugs into the backl of the pc ethernet connection. when i do this it says straight away limited or no connectivity, but when i take it off and do through usb connection on its own its ok. so it seems the ethernet connection is not being recognised.

it is LINKSYS WUSB54GS & WRT54GSUK SPEEDBOOSTER 125g ROUTER AND USB ADAPTER.
when i have the cable modem plugged in via usb it works, when i have the cable modem plugged in by ethernet the internet does not work.
now setting up the routher needs an ethernet connection, there is nothing wrong with the router cos thats all set up and being recognised upstairs on my pc and xbox 360.
the only thing is internet is not coming through down or upstairs when i use ethernet connection
using usb works downsatirs but cant connect this to my router via usb.
so im having a problem getting the router to work under ethernet connection which i think i need.

Are you setting up the router to work with the telewest modem?
You need to give it all of the internet details etc.

You need the cable modem plugged into the router via ethernet cable.
Then on the router, you need to follow the configuration settings for the cable modem. Last time I did it, I plugged the modem into the computer via usb, typed "ipconfig /all" in a command prompt and made a note of everything.
Then on the router I entered these details in the correct boxes.
Also, you need to unplug both modem and router and then plug them in, in the correct order, it should say the order in the router manual

You will need to clone the MAC address of the PC originally connected to the Modem onto the router.
While I know how to do this for Netgear routers, you will need to research how with your LinkSYS.

Surely the configuring of the router would have been done through a wizard when you first powered it on. Not sure about the Linksys, but on my Netgear I had to do all the configuring before I connected anything. Just a long shot, but did you set it up using the manual?

You can clone the MAC address easily on Linksys routers, but I didn't think you had to bother doing this these days

As far as TW are concerned you haven't had to bother about the MAC address for the past few years, but it doesn't do any harm to clone it anyway.
