Thumbs down any decent golfers out there can give me advice on buying new clubs ?

Gutted just went to me parents hotel to pick me golf clubs up to play on saturday and this scum bag DHS who was staying at the hotel has stolen me full set of clubs ! if there is justice in the world some one will it him in the head with a golf ball just as he is about to T-off with them

Total was about £1200

any way on the other side of the river >>> Gonna go and buy a new set tomrrow from my local pro shop but to be honest its only a very small shop and the guy who works there doesnt really have a clue about golf, he is only a young guy so I take it he is the fathers son or somethen.

So my main ? is what clubs should I look for which will be best suited for me. ie what shaft ? what size would heads ? etc etc

height 6.1

handicap = havent got one go round in 90-105 +

swing = quite fast

strengh = I drive a golf ball with my last driver about 250-290 yards once in a blue moon

thanks !

At your level, I would look for a game improvement set with Cavity Back, not blades. Maybe consider some sort of Rescue Club instead of the 3 Iron. The general rule is for slow to medium swing speed use Regular shafts, faster swing speeds go with stiff.

Driver, go with a large head, 440cc or near, but the fairway woods just try a few in the net to get a feel. Get a demo for a round if possible with any clubs you may consider.

Finally, the putter. No real advice other than try a few and go with the one that feels good and is confortable to the eye. Some like bladed putters while others go for something like the Odyssey 2ball putter which is bigger than a blade type.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards
Martin

I'm a 24 handicap, so similar level, and would look at the Wilson "Fat Shaft" range of clubs. A number of my friends use these and are very pleased as they are pretty forgiving. If I was in the market for new clubs these would be top my list.

If you have a fast swing and are accurate (regularly), then go with a stiffer, graphite shaft. However, if it's the more likely option of swinging fast because "it's bound to be better", then I would suggest a regular steel shaft and slow your swing down.

If possible find a golf shop on a course with a driving range as they will allow you to try out clubs and see what you get on with. Better still get some lessons and the pro will suggest the most approriate clubs for your ability and style. I did this last time and got 6 lessons thrown in as part of the package for buying the clubs.

You can get a brand new King Cobra 440SZ for £69.99 these days , think I paid nearly £300 for mine!

The loudest driver in golf....

Have a look for a seggy-hand set of irons maybe? got my Ping 2's from the local pro shop for £200 with new grips fitted, they last forever and there can't be many easier clubs to hit. (same goes for the Cobra)

Don't know any sites but go to your nearest course and ask about lessons there. You'll get a one on one lesson and feedback straight away on correcting faults or building a swing from scratch.

I've been playing golf for years but never had a lesson until recently. I've never carried a driver as I preferred a 3 wood off the tee. After having made a few changes to my swing the pro gave me a Slazenger K1 to try out. It seemed to go pretty well but I was a bit put off as he seemed far too keen to sell it to me. Longest most powerful driver ever apparently Can anyone recommend it?

If not a recommendation for a nice long, straight, forgiving driver would be appreciated

jamieuk23, sounds like you're about my level.

I play with some MacGregor M455 Irons and MacGregor woods, using my 3 wood mostly. I also have a Taylormade Monza putter. Would recommend all. Definitely get them custom-fitted to your height and stance.

To answer 2 questions, the King Cobra 440SZ came out in late 2003 I think, and is incredibly easy to hit long, straight, high and LOUD

If you can't find a 440, the 460SZ is even better off the tee, and (unbelievably) still playable off the deck!

Yeah, I'm just taking a few lessons at the moment. I can hit it most of the time but do tend to slice it on the tee off shot the majority of the time. Not quite made it onto a proper course yet. Don't want to look like a prat slicing it into the rough with other people watching.

I personally think that a good purchase would be a mid Championship club, maybe Preston or West Brom as they are both potential Premiership contenders and you would get a huge payment if they were to get promoted.

I guess you would need to take into account the asking price and also the potential wage bill you may face if they have a few "superstars" in the team.
