Americaneze

I have noticed on a few website forums that some people slip into Americaneze when posting. For example: mum-mom, anyway-anyways.
I know a few people on other forums that, when you talk with them, speak in English yet post in Americaneze.
Just wondering why.

I'm going to hit the next person that refers to July 7th as "7/7". And don't get me started on Haloween.

Worst one for me is when people pronounce the word ASK as AKS (A-R-K-S)

Seems to be more common by the day, it's not that difficult to say it correctly is it?

The thing that annoys me the most, by far, is "a bunch of....".
You can have a bunch of keys, a bunch of bananas etc. But you cannot have a bunch of crap, a bunch of grass, a bunch of rain etc etc.

I get angry just thinking about it.

Hi,

Quote:

It's not actually meant in a disrespectful way, but is simply short-hand for police and other such people to use, when dealing with so many bodies/deaths so frequently. They also use the words:

Crim - criminal
Perp - perpetrator
the db - dead body
vic - victim
pov - point of view
od'd - overdosed
AWOL - absent without leave
the 'Net - internet
the 3W's - the World Wide Web
going down - punishment or to be punished
Cap'n - Captain
Brass - also means Captain or Boss
ASBO - Anti-Social Behaviour Order
ABH - Actual Bodily Harm
GBH - Grievous Bodily Harm
MO - Modus Operandi, or a specific way someone does something, e.g. a murder

In fact, most organisations on either side of the Atlantic, have short-hand terms that they use all the time. Short-hand always occurs, even in little ol' Britain. It's just that we don't tend to see it as being short-hand, but as our usual way of speaking. Just as the Americans see using certain short-hand terms as normal to them.

Examples may include:
to go - to take away (food)
go back a minute - please repeat
FYI - For your information
FWIW - For what it's worth
AV components - audio/visual
Comp - complimentary (e.g. he was given two comp tickets, to see Bruce Springsteen at the Manchester MEN Arena)
Hi - hello
AFAIK - As far as I know
black coffee/tea - no milk
white coffee/tea - with milk
go easy on... - not too much of...

Not all of these are simply used as internet or written acronymns. People do say these as well, when they speak to you. I guess this is partially to do with evolution of our language, just as we don't speak in the same way that Shakespeare wrote all of his famous plays, sonnets and other works. When was the last time you heard someone say: "Lord, t'is sweatier than a mule's ass on this sabbath day" or whatever else Shakespeare may have said/wrote.

You may want to check out this very funny, intelligent, and occasionally rude website about all sorts of acronyms... here!

Thumbs up

Hi again,

On a slight tangent, there are also several words that mean one thing in some parts of the world, and something completely different in another. Anyone care to add to the following list?

In Britain we say - In the USA, they say or mean...
biscuit - cookie
cookie - muffin
sandwich - toastie
toastie - roasting
roasting - b*ll**ked!

tissues - toilet-paper
hankie - towel
towel - hand-cloth

condom - rubber
rubber - eraser
eraser - hitman/assassin
Bumbag - Fanny-pack
Fanny - butt/bum
Arse - ass
Ass - Mule
Mule - drug-trafficker

fruit squash - cordiale (sp???)
cordial - plenty/nice

cocaine - coke
coke - cola
cola - crap, no-name brand of tepid, semi-fizzy supermarket own-label flavoured syrup drink

In Britain, we say - In Australia, they say...
Barbeque - Barbie
Barbie - Sindy
Van - Ute (utility vehicle)
ejaculate - speak loudly or proclaim
Sexy - spunk
spunk - sperm/male swimmers

In France, they say, but mean - In Australia, they say, but mean...
Pomme, Apple - Pomme, Englishman

Arrgh... isn't language such a wonderful thing?!

Pronuciations are creeping in as well:

Research has become REESEARCH
Zebra - ZEEBRA
We even have started dropping the 'the' from the date i.e. July THE 7th in favour of July SEVENTH.

GRRRRRR

It'll be aluminum next!
