Rooney poster

I put this in here because its more than just about football. For me it ranks as being in the worst possible taste rivalling anything Benneton released. Its howas rooeny as nothing morer than a thug with a red cross resembling blood , with what look like two fangs with a mean, vicious and aggressive expression on his face. What kind of statement does that make about our flag and our people?

http://commercial-archive.com/131301.php
Nope I shant be buying a St Georges cross. Not now!

I agree that it isn't very tasteful, but I doubt that was part of the brief given by Nike to their advertising agency. As an advert I suspect it will be very successful.

I think it's a superb advert for the passion and celebration we all hope to see in the coming weeks. Rooney's face is one of wild celebration with his body resembling the English national flag.

Those groups and individuals that find this offensive are the ones who like to look for such things. The cross of st george is clearly depicted as is Rooney's obvious passion for the World Cup.

Comparing this to the crusades (?) and the crucifixion, for me, is finding fault and taking offense when none is intended.

Cue the PC brigade ......

We will probably see a lot more Englishmen show their pride in exactly the same
way at the next match. They will probably be condemned for inciting hooliganism.
But I am proud to be English, just like Rooney.

Not interested in the 'God squads' moaning, I just think it's pretty ghastly. Sorry, but shrek standing there screaming, in what does look like blood daubed on him would be fine for a horror movie ad, but as a patriotic statement it does nothing for me.

not particularly impressive but the ad execs have done their job well - to be controversial/provocative and get people talking about it; though whatever rent-a-quote Stephen Pound MP has to say is absolute bollards (as hard as he tries, he'll never be Tony Banks)

you're reading too much into it, and doesn't really change the impression most people have of that potty-mouthed granny-shagging chav

the only statement it makes is what you want it to make, imho

btw - doesn't really resemble blood to me

To my mind it is clearly designed to get to some people, it is meant to look like a crucifying, it is meant to look like blood, he is meant to look very annoyed.

but it's been done in such a way that there is little to tangibly complain about.

Personally:

It makes him look like a football hooligan from the tabloids, where's me slippers?

I vote bad

No reason other folks can't like it...

I dont dispute that just as Benetton were with their adds.i just dont like it thats all. I think it sends the wrong signals ie football thugs English morons etc etc.Cant ever see the rugby fraternity accepting an add like that. I would far rather the rest of the world saw us in a different light thats all Maybe you are right maybe I do read too much into it but as I say I dont like it.

Maybe it just says something about the other side of the english character . On one side polite reserved, tolerent, retiscent and then this other side loud, drink fueled ,aggressive. yobbish. Just a thought! Ironic because English fans have been so well behaved this time round and a credit to our country

Just out of interest, and I might be horribly wrong on this one, but doesn;t the 'cross' of St.George have religious connotations surrounding the crusades etc. anyway? In which case surely the first ever version was offensive....the church can't turn their back on this now and denounce it!!

Just sent it to a colleague of mine in Argentina.

I wouldn't like to meet him at a dark night.
Is great.
Go Argentina !!!!!! see you at the final.

He likes it & he's not even English, so do I.

Think it's a fantastic passionate piece of work, reminds a little of the way they dressed up that wannabe Scot, Aussie in Braveheart. (a film i've never seen or ever plan on watching incidently).

We all express and interpret national pride in different ways. Did you expect to see Mr Rooney wearing a diner jacket with a carnation in his button hole sipping a medium dry sherry and reading Oscar Wilde?

It does come across as a bit Pagan, but I suspect the intent behind the image is sincere. Should you really expect class and sophistication from this individual?

People see what they want to see.

Although I'd rather have seen Beckham (who is prettier) on the poster all I can see there is a man trying to look like the England flag.
"Unfortunately" the England flag is a red cross, so what position can he chose to look like a cross?

Talk about stereotyping.
You think it looks like a crucifix. I think it looks like the George cross.
It's advertising.
