Tell your brother to report it to Ebay and don't send anything. If you see anything which mentions Nigeria at the moment, be very aware.

Until you see money in your paypal account don't send anything.

This smells like a scam.

What's their feedback like?

Nuff said. Wait for the min period then report them as a non paying bidder. I'd probably send them a message to ask them to pay upfront but I suspect it won't get you anywhere.

Agreed. There are plenty of 'Nigeria scams' and a few China based ones on ebay now.

I've given up posting people not to bid on things like top of the range Denon DVD players form 'China', with no reserve and 20 feedback, all being left on the same day and all the 'buyers' having 0 feedback themselves! Sometimes you just have to learn the hard way.

I did not know that there are still people out there who actually do business with Nigeria business men online.

Would you think a registered member in say Canada could sell something that was located in say the UK ?
I was a bit perplexed as to how that could happen.
Feed back seemed good and was spread over a good few months.

I now clearly state in my auctions that if the buyer has any connection at all with Nigeria then not to bother wasting my time as I won't deal with them. Not had a single scammer bid since I started adding a warning as I guess they're looking for easier targets.

The english in the email is the major give away, I quote from your email: -

"account immediately the shipment is confirmed from you"

"credited into your account immediately we hear from you"

"We look forward serving your online auction payment needs in the future"

"Play 100s of games for FREE! http://games.mail.com/"

They want it to look like an automated email, this is 1 million percent a scam. Wait seven days and then file the claim.

Exclamation

Hi,

If any eBayer bids on an item I was selling, and they were from Nigeria or the Far East, I would simply cancel their bid... period!

In all honesty, for your own sanity, it isn't worth risking selling to anyone in these areas, because of the high amount of dodgy deals that go on, and the fact that eBay and PayPal are a nightmare about sorting things out, and getting you your money back!

There's also the issue of zero feedback, which can be suspect. But with the added combo of this bidder being from Nigeria, I'd bet my life's savings, it's a 100% con-artist/scam operation they're trying on you. Don't fall for it!

Scam, no question. There are also a lot of scams going on now asking to send stuff to Italy. Just add into your postage preferences that you will only post to UK and never send until you have the funds cleared in your sweaty mitts.

Another give-away is the usa.com domain on the alleged customer care email address - unless paypal own usa.com the email will never get there.

Perhaps you could send them a box containing a dog turd, get a shipping no., and see is payment is forthcoming.

a simular thing like that actually happened (tho, I can't find the URL now!) - basically this guy was selling a laptop and got an email from a scammer - so he posted a couple of bricks in a box, the funny thing was that the scammer had to pay import tax to receive it - he p[aid the tax...the story was so funny too!

I wish I could find it tho...

As well as the odd email address a.coombes is supposed to reply to, note the address that "paypal" email was supposedly sent from:

service@intl. paypal.customercare

since when did any email address have a space in it?

Also if he was sending tracking details to paypal he would be taken to a secure paypal site to do so, not just an email address.

I vote with the others, it's definitely a scam.

Dave

Your brother could of course string them along and send his own email confirming that UPS (or whoever) have issued him with a special paypal tracking number which will be activated on their tracking system automatically by paypal.com/uk when the money is deposited in his account.

I know this sounds silly but as they have never used ebay before they could have done something wrong with the payment or of course jsut havnt paid!

No, No, No.

Alledgedly the funds are on hold at Paypal until he can confirm he has shipped the item by providing Paypal with a tracking number at which point the funds will be released by Paypal to him.

Paypal does not work like this. You pay for the goods, the seller gets the money, then and only then does the seller ship. Unless the seller stipulated a Cash On Delivery clause of course.

The seller did not put his item up for sale on Ebay with any intention of sending the goods anywhere before he was paid for them, least of all to a foreign country where he would have no hope of retrieving his money or goods.
