Is this even possible? Because their best friend might not want to go out with me in case they hurt their friends feelings or something.

Don't tell the girlfriend until you've asked her friend out . If she says no then you've lost nothing. Then again if she says no, then tells your girlfriend of your advances then

Whether you can end up going out with her best friend should not be a condition of whether you stay with your girlfriend or not. Just because your 17 doesn't mean you don't need to have any considerations for others. First, you should finish with your girlfriend if you are having these feelings, since you obviously don't want to continue with her. Then you can test the water with this other girl by asking her out. At 17 you can get away with this sort of thing much easier than when you get older, but have a heart & treat your girlfriend decently.
