Although not relevent to this particular issue i would say this is not necessarily true. I personally have recently been involved with a well known transformer manufacturer as regards their 105VA models which consistantly dropped out after a short period of time. After many bench tests and running examples, both ourselves and the manufactures reached the same conclusion. The transformers were running so close to their limits (3x35w dichroics) that they actually relied upon the resistance of the cable, which needed to be in excess of 1.5m. Any shorter and the things would universally drop out (essentially overload from low resistance). Over two meters and they were fine. Just goes to show how tight some of these manufacturers run their tolerences to (and i am talking about one of the largest manufacturers of domestic transformers here, which i won't name for the obvious reasons - but if you're reading this you know who are!)
But more to the point, nothing gets past me
