Dishwasher fault

Looks like the 10 year old Neff has developed a fault. When the cycle is finished it leaves a white powdery deposit baked onto everything. Apart from that, things seem to be clean so I guess it is seeing hot water. Any suggestions?

I have topped up the salt and liquid reservoirs and have not changed the powder. It seems to be getting worse.

sounds like some sort of calcium issue... have you tried one of those cleaning products - i think finish do a product where run the machine through a full cycle with empty... sounds odd... though..

seems it can be related to using liquid detergent as opposed to powder... which do you use?

have you changed the salt and rinse aid etc? There are loads of things that you have to faf about with in dishwashers, make sure you've not forgotten any. It's funny but our machine developed the same fault, I cant remeber what was wrong with it though... I'll ask someone.

Same make of powder, rinse aid and salt. Not touched the plumbing at all. Tonight I am going to clean all of the filters and make sure that the water jets are clear

Hi Dr. D,

I had a similar problem with an old Bosch. This website may help, and because you and I live in a hard water area a dishwasher cleaner should be used occasionally.

Thanks Cynthia, I see you are in Sussex too. I know the coast is bad for chalk but we are 20 miles inland and don't suffer any furring up. Thanks for the web link, I will follow up the tips

We are about twenty two miles inland too so in the same sort of area.

When I had my old Bosch with the "powdery" problem I used to put in Calgon powder from time to time and it seemed to cure it somewhat so if all else fails for you try a Calgon tablet just on its own with a hot wash. It may need three "treatments" to see some improvement.

It's unpleasant drinking out of the "powdery" cups I used to find.

Happy again. I simply cleaned all of the filters in the bottom of the dishwasher. They did not look too bad and did not smell so I was not optimistic. A workmate told me that on the front panel there was an exit filter so I dismantled the worktop foot board, removed the front panel only to reveal wiring.

Next job is to get rid of the baked-on film that remains on some of the plates. Hot water and vinegar applied with a worn out scourer did the glass ware so that is my next job.

Thanks to all who made suggestions
