Talking The *OFF TOPIC* thread (aka Bargains Chatroom)

THE *OFF TOPIC* THREAD
(aka Bargains Chatroom)

Although the latest announcement by Stuart about thread hijacking and taking topics way OT (off topic) was not aimed at our section of avforums in particular (but most likely at some splitpersonlity individual who has been banned a few times over anyway) I felt that sometimes it's fun to go slightly OT and just be slightly crazy or something (or maybe it's just me).

So I thought with this being my 2000th post I would provide somewhere on this sub-sub forum to do just that. Now I know there is a general chat area for just that but I felt that we have a nice little community right here and some of us don't venture outside (heck some of you don't even know there's an area to talk about suppliers & technology, music dvd, tv dvd, or even general movie dvd talk.) so thought it would be great to have our very own general chat area, even if it is just this one thread, so that we could stay at home here in the bargains section where it's nice and warm and cosy and that way we would not have to venture out into the cold outdoors that is cyberspace (or the rest of avforums for that matter, no offence guys. ).

So this space is for you to talk about anything you like, or even brag about what the postman brought today (but please remind us about where you found the bargain, some of us might have missed it and may appeciate a second chance. so don't forget any relevent links if you have them. )

17-03/2006: 2000 posts and counting.

How about the fact that I received my 24 season 1 set on saturday after finally ordering it( even tho it was with my screenselect voucher so it cost nothing ), and found that there was 2 disc 2's and no disc 1 so I had to send it back, leaving me an even longer wait to put it in the cue of 'things I havent watched yet'!

Ha i'm doing better than that i've watched the first two and have three and four sitting around on disc that i've not watched yet. I've also been downloading season 5 for the ipod which is probably pointless as i'll have it on dvd by the time i've watched 3&4. Anyway, I made the stupid mistake of checking if episode 2 was working, I only watched the first like ten seconds and managed to spoil the whole thing!!!!. Damn, damn damn it!

You are not alone, good grief it must be as long if not longer for not actually watching BOB. 1st disc and part of the 2nd for me..... I think! It's been so long I may just have to pop the 1st disc in again as reminders. Not the biggest bargain BTW by a fair maaarrgin.
I wonder how many people do the same with CD's?

Or vinyl for that matter. Am I the only person who has a large record collection but finds it too inconvenient to get the records out and play them on a record player. Far easier to download the track & play it on my pc. But I still refuse to part with my record collection.

Dont even go there....my first job was with Our Price. A healthy 25% discount for 5 years and surround by fellow addicts has left me with enough vinyl to open my own store And I dont even own a player any more, have not for years...

Managed to break my comic addiction a few years ago, but there has still got to be a couple thousand holding the rafters down. Gotta have something to leave the kids

Hi-Fi mags for me.... you could call em comics slowly amassing abundance over 20 years or so.... most of which never get read again. Only in the last couple of years has the addiction been on decline.

They are not convenient for me. I rather play a record than a CD as they sound better. I will also not get rid of them. I have been collecting for nearly 20 years now since I was 14. I have some rare and sendamental records that will never go such as these.

Crumbs.. clearly a Pink Floyd fan. You must have scanned high and low for that lot?

Is that the standard 30th Anniversary edition? It looks cool... now I have seen it I want it

I have been playing PF since I was 14. I have played The Wall on vinyl once a month since then.

Just a lot of searching on Ebay. I got 8 of them in one auction for just £57. The 30th anniversary one was on its own and cost £13 BIN. The DSOTM in the yellow sleeve was just £6. I also got the standard black version of the 30th anniversary from Amazon to play. It sounds fantastic as it is on heavy vinyl.

The blue Division Bell is rare. It is only blue from Brazil or a special edition from the US. That cost me more at £23. The Echoes set is a special promo version of the set at £35.

I also like coloured vinyl.

Yello "Oh Yeah"

Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots"

FLaming Lips see through

Over the weekend i decided it was high time i upgraded all my old Jim Carrey video titles and catch up with some of his more recent work on dvd. With a £100 budget i managed to pick-up most of his catalogue (Yes i know you'll all think i've lost my marbles)..

Fun With Dick & Jane R1 - £13.99 CD-Wow
Lemony Snicket 2-Disc Sp Ed R2 - £8.99 CD-Wow
Eternal Sunshine 2-Disc Sp Ed R2 - £7.49 TheHut
Bruce Almighty R1 - £6.49 Amazon Marketplace
The Majestic R2 - £3.99 TheHut
The Grinch R2 - £4.73 Amazon Marketplace
Me, Myself & Irene R2 - £3.97 Amazon
Man On The Moon R2 - £4.66 Amazon Marketplace
Truman Show Sp Ed R1 - £6.99 CD-Wow
Liar, Liar R2 - £5.99 Play
The Cable Guy R2 - £4.99 Play
Ace Ventura 2:When Nature Calls R2 - £5.97 Amazon
Batman Forever 2-Disc Sp Ed R2 - £6.99 CD-Wow
Dumb & Dumber Uncut New Line Platinum Ed R1 - £9.11 Amazon Marketplace
The Mask - 10th Anniversary New Line Platinum Edition R1 - £6.29 Amazon Marketplace
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective R2 - £5.97 Amazon

Admittedly I could have probably got some of these a tad cheaper had i shopped around a little more and gone for R2 versions only. Still £106.61 for 16 films = £6.66 per dvd...not bad...if you like Jim Carrey, of course.

I think Jim Carrey will be very happy as it will boost his residuals.

The X-Files: Complete Season 1-9 Boxset (Bought last Christmas, watched 1 episode)
Friends: 'The One With All 10 Seasons' Boxset (Bought a couple of months ago, watched 1 episode)
Dawson's Creek: The Complete Collection (Bought two weeks ago, haven't touched it yet)

Though technically they probably don't count, as I've seen most episodes of all of them before (and own and have watched Seasons 1-3 of Dawson's Creek on DVD before).

Minor purchases:

That 70s Show: S1 - Bought for £9ish around Christmas, haven't touched it
The Twilight Zone: Complete Series (2002) - Bought months ago for £9.99, still haven't unwrapped it.
16 DVDs from the Filmnight sale - Still sealed.
About 10-12 DVDs just bought from CD-Wow for £1.99 each, along with a few I got for £2.99 last week. I can't see them getting watched for a while.

And this is coming from someone for whom it used to be rare not to watch a DVD the day I got it.

And am I the only one feeling entirely spoiled by these sub-£3 bargains/sales on DVDs lately? Suddenly new releases for £6-8 doesn't seem like such a great deal.

Nope, you're not alone.

I saw the Almost Famous 1 disc edition in Tesco's sale foe £2.89 and thought nah, I'll wait until the 2 disc is that price.

My Farscape complete seasons 1-4 just arrived this morning (£79.99 one not the £8 one unfortunately). Now how the hell am I going to sneak that monster boxset in past the missus??!!

I gave up with the boxes ages ago as they were taking up too much space. Now I stick the boxes in the attic and the discs in alphabetical order in several of these. Now the problem is that even though I leave expansion gaps periodically I certainly didn't leave enough space for 40 discs! It's gonna mean I'm going to have to go from 3 cases to 4 and the wife's going to want to know why the extra case was required!

[QUOTE=partyweb]Or vinyl for that matter. Am I the only person who has a large record collection

Nope! I have multiple copies of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band....having worn 'several' out over the years...I now have to listen to it with my head up the chimney
