Cardboard boxes

I am moving house and have the need for some strong cardboard boxes ... preferably all same sized (to aid stacking), not too big (must be able to carry them!) or small. I would prefer used/recycled boxes (to be environmentally friendly & I would want to get these free or very cheap! Does anyone know a good source for used cardboard boxes?

not for free but if you have any storage warehouses near you eg Big Yellow Storage they sell lots of cardboard boxes, you can buy various sizes also buy the tape to seal them up and bubble wrap from there.Tony not sure what part of London youre from but i got my boxes from Big Yellow Storage in North Finchley if that helps

Go to your local Tescos / Sainsburys and if you ask nicely they will usually give you their boxes that fruit comes packed in.
These are REALLY strong boxes that have parts that lock together when you stack them.

They are really ideal for moving house.

Neil - thanks for that. They sound ideal, just about the right size for humping. I will try my local tescos ... I'll call them now (I need to know whether they flatten these or whether I would have to do it & also what time of day/night I would have to collect them).

Big Yellow are VERY expensive.

Check out www.aid-pack.co.uk this is where I buy the boxes I use for my business.

You will probably find them not very helpfull as all there boxes get crushed and they get quite a bit of money for recycling. Best bet head down an hour or two before closing and help yourself by condensing all the banana trays down into just one and taking all the rest. The store wont mind this unless you try and take there plastic ones which cost them money of course!

Depends what you are transporting, go for dual wall or triple wall to be extra safe.

If you don't have any luck with the supermarkets, you could try a local bookshop.

I'm pretty sure they get all their book delivered in reasonable size boxes and I'm guessing they must be pretty sturdy given the nature of what they have to hold.

Can't guarantee they'll give them to you as don't know what they do with them, but worth a try!

I thought all boxes in stores had to be flattened and disposed immediately as they were a fire hazard.

Book shops usually have a good supply of strong, clean boxes. You just have to ask in advance to find out when they get their deliveries in.

we always used to get our boxes from the local co-op they always put them on a counter by the door so people could take them if needed

Thanks to all who have replied so far.

I will try Tescos & any local bookshops first. Failing that, Russell Piper's aid-pack.co.uk suggestion seems reasonable.

Any other suggestions welcome - I have a few weeks still to get these in.

How would wine boxes suit? Depending on where abouts in london you are I have mases that are roughly the same size.
