Question Which newspapers/magazines do you read?

The wife and I were just over-intellectualising about the relative pros and cons of the volumous Sunday papers, and it got me to thinking: What do members of this place read? I know we regularly have a pop at the media when it stirs controversy (I, in particular, have a passionate loathing for the Daily Mail, Evening Standard and the free Metro, as they're all published by the same, hateful Group), so I thought it might be fascinating to see which publications - including magazines (please, no porn titles!) - we like ... or not.

NB: I was going to do this as a poll, but that would quickly have become a farce: there are just too many publications to mention.

I usually avoid newspapers, as I'm sick of the way they view the world. Almost everything in them is either of the 'Isn't-the-world-a-hideous-and-hateful-and-dangerous-and-unfair-place' type, or else the 'I've-got-loads-in-the-bank-and-two-homes-so-I'm-all-right-thanks-very-much' type - neither of which views I subscribe to.

What I do subscribe to are classical music magazines: The Gramophone, BBC Music and Classic FM. I also occasionally buy the Sunday Times (great for its freebies, like today's DVD of the cult comedy classic, 'How To Get Ahead In Advertising' with Richard E. Grant), but I rarely read much of it beyond the Culture supplement. I used to buy the Guardian religiously (once practically obligatory if you worked in any creative/media-related industry, as I do), but I thought it lost its way and became too 'holier-than-thou-left-wing-socialist-with-a-dash-of-I've-got-loads-in-the-bank ... etc. Ditto, The Observer.

Right, that's me. What about you lot?

The only newspapers that enter this house are freebies, and the odd Sunday paper that my wife buys to amuse herself on a Sunday afternoon. No daily papers - they are all too politically biased in one direction or another.

Before the internet came along, I used to buy lots of magazines on hi-fi, radio, electronics, and computing, but since the internet (especially broadband), I don't buy any. The stuff you read in magazines is at least 3 weeks old - anything newer than that would not make the printers in time. For up to date, impartial information, nothing beats the internet - by impartial, I mean that you get lots of stuff from various sources that you choose, and sort out the wheat from the chaff yourself.

So we share pretty much the same take on this, then, Nick? The only reason I subscribe to the afore-mentioned mags is for ... you guessed it, the free cover CDs! And so I'll have something other than a book on esoteric philosophy or whatever to nose through on my long commutes to and from London each day.

None really..

Well, MCN sometimes... and that's it.

I'll sometimes read a newspaper if i'm on a train, in a waiting room etc, and there is one left lying around..... but I don't distinguish between the various rags.... I haven't actually bought one for many years now.

I don't (by choice) watch the TV news either, I'd honestly rather stare at a blank wall, thinking happy thoughts.

I used to read the Times until they did tabloid style size, absolutely hate the new format. At the moment the Telegraph is the last of the true broadsheets so I get this, I also think it's a quality read.

I read Viz (or Wizz as my girlfriend called it yesterday) occasionally private eye, and sometimes newsweek.

My home page is the bbc news website so I get my fix of the daily events off that. I used to read the Guardian, but it would easily take me 4 hours to read it cover to cover and I really just can't be bothered.

Newsweek is a quality publication, tend to cover the really interesting stuff that doesn't get much coverage.

That's a strange selection! Cows on the road in Misterton and then proper news!
Did you notice The Retford Times on sale outside Arkwright's shop in 'open all hours'?It was filmed in Doncaster.

Me,I'm a Telegraph reader.........though I'm beginning to wonder why.

http://www.sundayherald.com . Covers a broad spectrum of news, sport and current affairs, plus it's generally well written into the bargain.

The Sunday Times.

DVD Reviewer.

Occasionally What hi-fi, Home Cinema Choice and various camera mags. Used to subscribe to the first two but fell out of love with AV so cancelled them both.

However, my 3 brothers are all avid mag buyers so Classic Rock, Q, NME and so on tend to do the rounds here after the respective owner has read them. Note that I dislike NME a great deal. Sometimes look up Movie Premiere as my youngest brother is a freelance film writer/journalist/reviewer in the guild and has had various articles published in that mag amongst others.....

Pete.

Radio Times, Times, Grauniad, FT occassionally (always has the best TV listings due to the funny/sarcastic programme comments)
- BBC News Online is usually my first stop when catching up with the latest news

The wife gets the Guardian and Times for the Ed supps, but the press as a whole, as shadowritten and Nick says, are too politicaly biased for me. Radio times, and the occasional hi-fi mags are all I buy.
