Question Which newspapers/magazines do you read?

The wife and I were just over-intellectualising about the relative pros and cons of the volumous Sunday papers, and it got me to thinking: What do members of this place read? I know we regularly have a pop at the media when it stirs controversy (I, in particular, have a passionate loathing for the Daily Mail, Evening Standard and the free Metro, as they're all published by the same, hateful Group), so I thought it might be fascinating to see which publications - including magazines (please, no porn titles!) - we like ... or not.

NB: I was going to do this as a poll, but that would quickly have become a farce: there are just too many publications to mention.

I usually avoid newspapers, as I'm sick of the way they view the world. Almost everything in them is either of the 'Isn't-the-world-a-hideous-and-hateful-and-dangerous-and-unfair-place' type, or else the 'I've-got-loads-in-the-bank-and-two-homes-so-I'm-all-right-thanks-very-much' type - neither of which views I subscribe to.

What I do subscribe to are classical music magazines: The Gramophone, BBC Music and Classic FM. I also occasionally buy the Sunday Times (great for its freebies, like today's DVD of the cult comedy classic, 'How To Get Ahead In Advertising' with Richard E. Grant), but I rarely read much of it beyond the Culture supplement. I used to buy the Guardian religiously (once practically obligatory if you worked in any creative/media-related industry, as I do), but I thought it lost its way and became too 'holier-than-thou-left-wing-socialist-with-a-dash-of-I've-got-loads-in-the-bank ... etc. Ditto, The Observer.

Right, that's me. What about you lot?

The only newspapers that enter this house are freebies, and the odd Sunday paper that my wife buys to amuse herself on a Sunday afternoon. No daily papers - they are all too politically biased in one direction or another.

Before the internet came along, I used to buy lots of magazines on hi-fi, radio, electronics, and computing, but since the internet (especially broadband), I don't buy any. The stuff you read in magazines is at least 3 weeks old - anything newer than that would not make the printers in time. For up to date, impartial information, nothing beats the internet - by impartial, I mean that you get lots of stuff from various sources that you choose, and sort out the wheat from the chaff yourself.

So we share pretty much the same take on this, then, Nick? The only reason I subscribe to the afore-mentioned mags is for ... you guessed it, the free cover CDs! And so I'll have something other than a book on esoteric philosophy or whatever to nose through on my long commutes to and from London each day.

None really..

Well, MCN sometimes... and that's it.

I'll sometimes read a newspaper if i'm on a train, in a waiting room etc, and there is one left lying around..... but I don't distinguish between the various rags.... I haven't actually bought one for many years now.

I don't (by choice) watch the TV news either, I'd honestly rather stare at a blank wall, thinking happy thoughts.

I used to read the Times until they did tabloid style size, absolutely hate the new format. At the moment the Telegraph is the last of the true broadsheets so I get this, I also think it's a quality read.

I read Viz (or Wizz as my girlfriend called it yesterday) occasionally private eye, and sometimes newsweek.

My home page is the bbc news website so I get my fix of the daily events off that. I used to read the Guardian, but it would easily take me 4 hours to read it cover to cover and I really just can't be bothered.

Newsweek is a quality publication, tend to cover the really interesting stuff that doesn't get much coverage.

That's a strange selection! Cows on the road in Misterton and then proper news!
Did you notice The Retford Times on sale outside Arkwright's shop in 'open all hours'?It was filmed in Doncaster.

Me,I'm a Telegraph reader.........though I'm beginning to wonder why.

The Sunday Times.

DVD Reviewer.

Occasionally What hi-fi, Home Cinema Choice and various camera mags. Used to subscribe to the first two but fell out of love with AV so cancelled them both.

However, my 3 brothers are all avid mag buyers so Classic Rock, Q, NME and so on tend to do the rounds here after the respective owner has read them. Note that I dislike NME a great deal. Sometimes look up Movie Premiere as my youngest brother is a freelance film writer/journalist/reviewer in the guild and has had various articles published in that mag amongst others.....

Pete.

Radio Times, Times, Grauniad, FT occassionally (always has the best TV listings due to the funny/sarcastic programme comments)
- BBC News Online is usually my first stop when catching up with the latest news

The wife gets the Guardian and Times for the Ed supps, but the press as a whole, as shadowritten and Nick says, are too politicaly biased for me. Radio times, and the occasional hi-fi mags are all I buy.

"The Telegraph" throughout the week, "Sunday Times", "Radio Times", "Good Housekeeping" (can't think many of you take that!) and "What Video & Widescreen TV".

Also the weekly local paper "The Courier" and any papers that have a good freebie DVD (I don't even have a player yet but I've quite a DVD library in anticipation of purchasing a DVD Recorder, haven't yet made up my mind on which one).

Yes, my politics are blue!

Only read the free ones for their local content.(how many garden sheds in the area have been burgled this week etc) Prefer to get news from the tv or radio.
Magazenes, I subscribe to a model engineering based one and now and then I buy a radio controlled model aircraft mag', especially if there is a decent free plan, but mainly to keep up with new technology.
The missus gets the caravan clubs members mag and proceeds to read most of it to me.

Newspapers - only the local one, to see planning applications,if any of the people I used to go to school with have been caught Drunk etc.
Magazines as and when the fancy takes me but only if good freebies on the cover.
Otherwise use teletext and the web.

I particularly like their weekly "scoop" picture of the "next" big model......that is actually an artists impression that inevitably looks nothing like the final bike!

the reviews actually annoyed me, they never really went into great detail, and almost were always aimed at someone who had 0 knowledge in electronics, i wanted something a bit more detailed so found online a lot better

I usually buy EDGE magazine every month - dunno why I've never got a subscription

I usually read The Guardian online, but will usually buy the Times or Mirror when I do decide to buy a paper instead of reading the Metro (which is total crap).

Arn't you supposed to rave on about how great the gadget show is now the baldy bloke does the av forums podcast?

Personally, the concept of a podcast annoys me. It just adds to the behamoth that is the Apple marketing machine. Soon everying will either have an i- in front of it or end in pod. Pod will be the new ism. I'm just waiting for post i-podism...

Empire magazine is the only one that i pay a subscription to, but with 2 lads in the house we also have to keep picking up and putting away about 6 gamer mags N64 and others but most of them seem to have mario on the cover? I have collected Empire since the first edition Tend not to get the local "Worcester evening news" as its so pollitically one sided!

HI,

Where do I start?!

Papers:
- The Independant, or The Telegraph, or The Times (during the week, depending on my mood)
- The Sunday Times (again, when my mood suits me)
- Metro (if there's ever a copy left on our local bus service)
- Any others, if the free DVD is worth having in it!

Magazines:
- Empire
- DVD Review
- Sight & Sound (occasionally)
- Video Watchdog
- Asian Cult Cinema
- Newtype USA
- Radio Times
- TV & Satellite Weekly
- The monthly satellite TV listings magazine, whose name I can't recall
- The Classic Marvel Figurine Collection
- Hong Kong Legends DVD Collection
- Private Eye
- Cat World (occasionally)
- Bizarre (depending on the content of the issue)
- Home Cinema Choice
- The Weekly Law Review
- and many others!
