Idiot's guide?

Is there an Idiots guide somewhere on the Forum, to explain what HDCP, 720p etc. actually mean, when they became the ratified standard, what we should be looking at before purchasing...

I am in the process of looking for a HDTV, I see lots of tv's for sale, but need to know what I should be asking for, what does it mean etc. Rather than buying a TV made in (?) early 2005 and discovering that it maybe isn't compatable, a simple eedjut's guide would be very usefull?
