IP Cameras

Since these forums have technically minded people I thought I would bring up the discussion of IP Cameras (not to be confused with webcams).

At the moment I have 1 IP camera and since I have found these to be very useful for keep an eye on things whilst away from the home. I'm looking to buy more IP cameras but can't find many sites with reviews and camera setups on the web.

Does anyone else here have an IP camera? If so what make/model, is it any good? Whats your setup? Multiple cameras? lan/wlan? Ftp server, webserver, motion detection?

Check out www.axis.com. Their cameras are excellent (I have used them at work) and have probably meet your requirements plus some!

I have a lowly Linksys WVC54G-UK which I got shrink wrapped off Ebay for £90 inc delivery. Its fantastic in decent light and even compensates for low light. Though its rubbish in the dark and static, so no remote panning etc... What can you expect for £90 though, and it's standalone and also wireless, simply just connects to your router!

You can view it here....

hmmm do you want to limit yourself to IP cameras?

if you want one better there are GSM devices to transmit video so you can recieve the video on your smartphone, and the bonus is you can use any camera you want aslong as it has a composite/bnc out

Hi,

im seriously tempted by this. I don't want to derail the thread but lets just say I have a landlady that like to use her own key, a bit too often.

With this camera, am I able to setup a record on motion option? Also, can I get it to record to my PC's hard disk?

Your landlady can go to jail and be fined thousands if you report her. Write her a letter telling her that. You have the right to quiet enjoyment.

Hi,

You can't get it to record to your hard disk, but you can get it to record clips on motion detection and email them to an email address, which is a feature I found very handy when I had the camera setup for it's original purpose.

The beauty of this camera is that once setup, you can view it from anywhere with an internet connection (as long a syou use MS Internet Explorer, as it doesnt like Firefox.)

Cheers,

K

It also time stamps your video so its easy to see when events occurred.

Used it when getting some DSS tenants evicted from the flat below ours after a year of anti-social behaviour.

Kept it trained on my motor in case they smashed it up!

Think it acted as a nice visual deterrent, then to top it off I got video of them moving their belongings out in an uncovered flat bed van with their mattress thrown on top. In the rain!

Payback!

Sheer class!
