2 numbers, 1 star = a whopping £6.10 for me

3 lucky people who got all 5 numbers and 1 lucky star got £1,736,317.20!

Last Friday that combo paid out £501k but usually averages £240-300k so they did well tonight!

On the Lotto website, it says: "THIS FRIDAY £1480M MUST BE WON!"

"Estimated jackpot. The EuroMillions jackpot is subject to exchange rate fluctuations and is now capped at €190million (estimated £148m subject to exchange rates) and must be won. If the jackpot is not won on Friday 10th August, the jackpot prize will roll down to the next winning prize tier."

Home | The National Lottery

Yet on the Euromillions website it states:

There were no jackpot winners in the EuroMillions game on Tuesday 7 August, so the jackpot cap of €190 million (around £148 million) remains in place for the next game this Friday. That means any money over and above €190 million in the jackpot prize pool will roll down to the highest non-jackpot prize tier that has winners. And if the jackpot isn’t landed this Friday, the whole value of the jackpot prize pool will roll down in the EuroMillions game next Tuesday. Excited yet? You should be! - (8th August 2012)

I phoned them up!

Euromillions website is wrong...

The jackpot money MUST be won tomorrow..so if nobody takes the 5 + 2 outright win, it'll trickle down. Thus there is a better chance of walking away with big money as obviously the odds (whilst still incredibly high!) will be reduced

On Tuesday we saw the 'overspill' of the jackpot allowance shared amongst 3 UK tickets with 5 + 1, at £5.2m, thus £1.73m each

If the same scenario were to repeat itself tomorrow, for example, those 3 tickets with 'only' 5 + 1 numbers will walk away with circa £50m each

Historically there have been cases whereby nobody has won the jackpot nor the 5 + 1, so it's feasible one could 'win' the 'jackpot' tomorrow with 'only' 5 numbers !

Sounds good. Now shall I buy just the one ticket, or double my chances by buying two?

Anyone fancy working out the probability of winning (a share of) the jackpot given the above trickle-down rules?

Maybe one for liquid's thread

You'd need to know the odds of someone winning the jackpot and since we have no idea how many tickets they have sold we can't work that out. You can't even take a guess at it based on how often someone wins as presumably the number of tickets sold increases with each roll over.

I'm happy for you to go with say 120 million tickets sold, based on these comprehensive stats: 2012 Euro Millions Ticket Sales Figures

So, please proceed

I bought my ticket yesterday, and - most importantly - I had a dream last night that I won £475. On that basis I'm pretty much guaranteed to win tonight. Sorry everyone, there's not even much point in you buying a ticket.

£400 eh

Worth it now and again I reckon if you're flush with cash and won't miss it.

How much did they get back?

Usually only get 1 number whenever I buy a ticket(s) on the odd occasion. Looks like i'll have to take another trip to Tesco's later for a few more tickets.

Odds of winning the jackpot - 1 in 116,531,800 - 0.0000000086

Odds of winning 5 + 1 - 1 in 6,473,989 - 0.00000015

odds of no one winning the jackpot with 120million players

(chance of not winning with 1 ticket)^number of tickets
(1 - 0.0000000086)^120,000,000 =
(0.9999999914)^120,000,000 = 0.35709

I think we are good at this point, that shows the odds of no one winning the jackpot with 120million tickets sold being 36% sounds fair enough.

So we need the chance of you winning either the jackpot or the second tier with no one else winning the jackpot.

chance of winning 5+2 or 5+1 = 0.0000000086+0.00000015 (am I allowed to add these together??) = 0.000000163

so chance of you winning 5+2 or 5+1 and no one winning the jackpot is 0.000000163 x 0.35709 = 0.000000058

ok that might be right this time.

You could probably also take into account the chance of winning the jackpot with 5+0 but there is so little chance of that happening because with 120,000,000 tickets the chance of no one getting 5+1 is 0.0000000089 which is near enough exactly the same as winning the main jackpot with 1 ticket.

I had a lotto online account I've not used for about 4 years. Last week I got an email saying I had funds! Could have been a huge win I missed out on! So after half an hour of faffing to get my password to work and the reset not working (due to Chrome grrr) I finally got in and found out I had £1

Soooo, used it to do a lucky dip and won a tenner! So today I've bought 5x euro tickets.

I've not spoken to him since but I know he's still working so not much I'm guessing

I read via Twitter one is more likely to die on their way to buying a lottery ticket (that is, to a retail store of course rather than from the kitchen to the laptop in the lounge!), than winning the lottery itself
