Oh..Hell just broke blockbuster hire movie..Help!

Well hired kunk fu hustle tonight, noticed it was a pink looking disc [is this a cheepy] anyway it was filthy as usual so i began cleaning disc applied a bit of pressure and..******** it snapped in half!
Now i have had hundreds of discs and cleaned most of them this was no different to the rest but it broke.
Were do i stand and what should i do?..choices

Deny it!
Admit cleaning it and it bust
just drop it in and see what happens..

Anyway i think they are using cheepy suppliers now as a disc i hired a while ago was either aussie or asian as the subs were not english by default.
I have been a member for about 15 years now and never had any problems or returned damage discs before even all usually returned on time.
I have a collection of over 400 discs and never had one bust on me either..Advice

Put in a different DVD that isn't broken (some old crap/cheap one) and tell them that you want your money back as they gave you the wrong disc

Hi MArtian,

If I were you, just own up, and admit you broke it. Providing your history with your branch of Blockies is good (i.e. not a late-returner of discs, you don't owe large fines, etc, etc), they may just say Thanks, and not ask for payment.

Blockies staff aren't all thickos, and they certainly wouldn't lend out a disc that was broken in half! Admit you broke it, and you'll be a better person for it!

Or do what Pooch says, problem is i did that with choices, it was a game but they asked for payment!, my bloody PS2 had scratched there disc .

Lets just say i have not rented anything for about 3-4 years

I returned an empty box once. I found the rental disc in my dvd player about 2 weeks later. No one from blockbusters contacted me nor was there a fine on my account.

Just tell them the disc was badly scratched and was jumping in your player. You took it out to clean and it snapped. Moan like hell and tell them they ruinied your planed movie evening. I am sure they will appologise and replace the disc.

Cool

I once broke a cover mounted CD getting it out of the case the disc was in so tight, I wonder it has not happened more times.

i love the old blags,

pretend it has nothing to do with you,
pretend the staff did it,
pretend it was like that when you got it, "it must have happened when i put it in the drop box - the 12 inch fall onto the 8 inch thick foam rubber must have broke it in half" Lie through your teeth and look like a fool.

do you remember when you were a kid and you lied to your mum about something and she KNEW you had done it and were lieing? well thats what blockies employees are like. we have heard it all - all you will ending up doing is looking like a prat.

Go in tell the truth and be a man.

Just go in to the store, act all annoyed and say the disc was broken as soon as you opened up the box at home, and then demand another copy to watch. Easy

Just say it broke. Worst case scenario, you'll have to spend 10quid on a replacement.

Do what the politicians do - blame it on the movies... Tell them that since watching the movie you have been doing kung-fu chops on everything you find, including their DVD. Therefore it is their own fault for being purveyors of such corrupting material

Whilst some of the explanations for the broken disc are quite funny, I should imagine a lot of them are tongue in cheek.

However, I am shocked that anyone should need to lie about something like this, or anything else, it's all part of the degradation of human society as we know it. Just think about whether you'd like someone lying to you to get out of a hole. Don't do it guys, feel good about yourself and give a good example to your children or they will grow up doing the same.

I hope I don't get any hate mail after this!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

Think about this scenario, the other way: imagine, Martian, if you were the one who was being returned a disc of yours, and the person who had borrowed it, was trying to get out of replacing your property?! How happy would you feel, that someone was trying to get out of replacing your disc, that you'd paid good money for?! i doubt you'd be too chuffed, if someone was doing this to you.

Just own up, and be responsible!

people moan about the price of rentals when every day someone is trying to blag the trade. getting out of the responsiblties that they signed up to when they joined. in the three years that i've beenat blockies i've heard every trick and LIE in the book. people will do anything not to pay.

when you signed on the dotted line you gave your word to abide by the rules -are you now saying that yuor word is no good?

Nah, he's just saying the disc's no longer any good as a dinner plate / frisbee / drug-card-cutter / bookmark / placemat / drinksmat / vegetable slicer / potato peeler / etc, etc! You know - the kind of things that all DVD's are meant to be used for nowadays!

Seriously, though: Gary's right! You signed to abide by the rules. Now you've broken them, you've got to pay up!

This is a stupid thread, LISTEN pal, just slide the broken godamm disc into the blockbuster door slot. They wont know otherwise. Im sure if the disc broke wid u just cleaning it, it could have broke on its desent on to the pile of other returned dvds. You got nothing to lose, if they accept it as accident GREAT, if not JUST pay them the GODAMM MONEY.

1) It's not a stupid thread.

2) Martian broke the disc. He should pay-up.

3) Blockbuster staff WILL know otherwise!

4) If it were your property that had been broken, would you accept lame-ass, untruths, from someone trying to get out of paying you what they are legally obliged to?! I certainly wouldn't, and Blockbuster shouldn't have to either!

Martian simply needs to pay up for damage he caused! ...Or maybe Blockbusters might prefer to cancel his membership, and then chase him up through a Debt Collection Agency instead?!

YOUR RIGHT, but listen. We all know the right thing to do is to pay up. But obviously Martin has other plans, if he didnt he wouldnt be making a stupid thread like this and he would just pay the godam money.. I just offered and alternative solution to a situation that is so so so serious. CRIMINAL

The prices Blockbusters charge is highway robbery anyway.

Take it back say it broke accidently, if they don't accept it tell them that you will cancel your membership and go onto an online retal company where you can pay say a £10 a month and have what ever you want delivered. I'm pretty sure they will not want yto loose you they need all the members they can get.

I don't know why you stick with them anyway, if they were to care about the discs you would not have to clean the disc before you put it into the machine. You don't know where they have been.

another fantastic attitude - break something and tell them if they dont let you off you will take your business elsewhere

you can go onlineif you wish - but dont make any plans about what you want to see - you'll get what your given. and if yuo think that on line disc are better (i.e not scratched then you really haven't seen any - they are much much worse - but that is why onluine rental is losing ground to stores again.

In my view Martian was doing them a favour by cleaning the disc in the first place! DVD's shouldn't just break when you try to clean them! We've all had a go at cleaning a disc from Blockies before, and most people have had a go trying to snap a cd in half too - you all know what such force is required to make that happen!

He should not pay a penny, the question is should he go the totally honest route, which in my experience is not always the best policy and might be made to cough up, or just fib a bit so it causes less aggro and no charge? Is any individual at Blockbuster gonna be truly affected by him returning a broken disc? Hell No! Like anyone is truly gonna give a rat's arse! I'd feel like a right sucker if I payed up!

And it's not the same as lending a DVD to a friend. In a large rental business they're gonna expect to get a broken disc now or then, it's just wear and tear. They accomodate for this.

Don't pay up Martian! (*flame suit on)

Ok guys i was joking with my relpy i did come CLEAN explained what happend and hoped they would accept that the disc was probably faulty i said i never had this happen to me before and i had treated disc the same as my own collection. She did say it was filthy and something may have been spilt on it to damage it..Anyway she logged it as faulty and gave me another.
I will try not to complain about blockbuster in future as they have accepted this without any problems..good on them
I never really though much about the cost of damaged returned discs like this and it must be payed for somehow ..Hence the £3.95 per title !
