Mansfield came in at number 6th worst, Nottingham 3rd and first place --- HULL!

Epsom and Ewell won the best place to live in award- but be rich very rich! Westminster came second because it has some of the worst schools in the country otherwise it woud've been top spot.

Was there anywhere in Wales either? Or did it just turn out to be England?

It was on C4.

Apparently the criteria (borrowed from C4 website) were:

Crime: Criteria include violence against the person, sexual crimes, robbery, burglary, theft of a car and theft from a car.

Education: Statistics based on the percentage of 15 year olds in each local authority achieving five or more GCSEs or equivalent at grades A to C. Only LEA-maintained state schools have been included.

Environment: Four criteria for each local authority, including sunshine hours, rainfall level, access to parks and open spaces, and life expectancy.

Lifestyle: Culture and leisure facilities and the number of retail outlets, bars, cafes, restaurants and hotels nearby.

Employment: The percentage of economically active people in employment from the period 2003-2004. This segment of the population is the number of people who are fit to work, i.e. not retired, disabled etc, and who have a full or part time job. Again, the numbers were separated into local authority areas.

Slough managed to scrape by on the fact that some of us AVF'ers live in or around it ..... massively swinging the positive scores up by our sheer brilliance.

I don't see how Hull can come first and Grimsby not come anywhere seeing that Grimsby's like a smaller, shoddier, more run down version of Hull.

I now start the official campaign for Grimsby as the worst place to live in the UK - it's about time we won something - apart from the Auto Windscreen Cup (April 19, 1998 just in case anyone's forgotton)

I thought Ashford was a bit out of place in that list too. Having been there a few times I thought they'd put it in the wrong list. From my experience of the place, No. 4 in the list of the worst places would be more appropriate.

I was a student there in the mid 80's and thought it was terrific place to live. Or maybe it's always been like that and I only ever saw the good parts of it

Nice to see my adopted town holding it's own at Number 5 there. To be honest, it should really do better than that. I mean, I've been to Hull too and can't justify a full 4 places difference...

I went there for work a few weeks ago. I consider myself lucky that I got out alive. Most of the people I met seemed bloody miserable.

Anywhere than bloody Epsom............. It's almost as bad as Berrylands......... And I really would rather live in a 'crime filled area' than that dead or alive hole! At least there would be a bit of action..............

Ditto. The gun crime there has reduced the town to utter misery. Not to mention the lack of meaningful work. Still, there's nothing unique in that in post industrial Britain.

Nottingham has declined a lot over the last 20 years, with a massive gun crime problem now. When I was in my teens and early 20s Nottingham felt far safer than Mansfield on a Friday and Saturday night but I would say that Nottingham is now rougher. In those days nobody would open a night club in Mansfield so you had to travel to Nottingham or Sheffield for the clubs and they would never let you in if you were from Mansfield. The coaches had to drop you off a distance from the doors so that the bouncers wouldn't see them and then you had to make up an address to get in the place.

That is a damn shame. I spent 3 happy years there and never once felt unsafe walking about at night after going to places like Rock City. The Nottingham pubs were fantastic - Yates esp. was an amazing place at the weekend. Plenty of ****** students and locals but no real bother and none of that 'son of Faliraki' behaviour that's been shown on some TV programs recently.

Just noticed Guildfords in there! How? Is that based on carefully avoiding certain areas or shutting your eyes when going out on the town at night? The estate that borders the A3 is one of the roughest in the South East (which of course includes such roughhouse areas as those in Gillingham, Croyden, Gatwick, Portsmouth and of course Brighton (the whitehawke estate - enter at your peril)! Plus Guildfords nightlife is ok if you stay out of certain areas. Hardly a top ten candidate.

Last time I went to Notts, before this year, was for an away game in 1980. Seemed a nice enough place back then. Shame to see it now.
