A reminder to why it's always worth calculating your tax, and not relying on it all being right

Something like The Salary Calculator - 2012 / 2013 Tax Calculator makes it very easy to check, once you have your P60s / P45s for the year.

I've also just had a rebate from 06/07, due to inaccurate calculation of medical expenses allowance. However, my accountant (who was also notified) has told me not to cash the cheque just yet as there have been numerous rebates recently which shouldn't have been issued, and the recipient has had to pay it back!

I've given him my P60 for that year to double check for me.

For the last twelve years for the two companies I have worked for, I have processed my own wages, so sadly no refund for me. Shame as a few hundred quid would come in handy about now.

Looks like the Government have launched their own tool...obviously it failed on the 1st day due to high demand but there you go.

BBC News - Online tax calculator falls over

33% of your tax goes on welfare!

Thats more than health and education combined!

I got a massive £17 refund. Better than owing them though.
Why is it that I'm getting these refunds for the tax year back to 2008? Does it really take them that long to work this out?

Maybe they do an extra run after a time which they consider enough for any additional information to come to light.
