Cinema prices!

How are they getting away with hiking the prices so much. 10years ago when the cineworld where I lives opened it was £3.20 for a ticket it is now £11.20 for one ticket!

So of me and my partner wanna go its costing over £20 just for the ticket and if we wanted anything food wise it would be another £10 for a drink and a pack of sweets! How are they getting away with this.

Is it any wonder people pirate films when the price of going is so much. It might not be as good quality but at least it's not daylight robbery like the cinema is.

While not that much of a discount, usually the cinemas have small discounts if you buy online, still it is stupid how expensive it now all is

when did cineworld hike their prices?

last time I went was about 6 weeks ago, and it was only £7.50

oh and here's a tip for you, if you want sweets from the overly priced choose and weigh, keep hold of the bag as you leave, then go somewhere cheaper to buy, or better still, buy a few bags of sweets for a couple of quid, then chuck them in the bag you kept from the last visit. once you are in your seat, just take it out and eat with peace of mind knowing that should any employees snooping around will see the bag and be non the wiser.

that's what I do.

I think it depends on location? as my local Cineworld isn't that pricey (compared to what OP paid) and drinks at that one are like £3-4

oh yeah, didn't factor that in.

when I used to go to the one in didsbury with my sister occasionally, the prices were higher than the local one for me.

My local odeon charge £13 a ticket to see one of their movies on an imax screen. But if you go to a proper imax only place it costs £8.

Unhappy

Sadly the cinemas around here are Vue etc. and only basic film.
The end result is overpriced SD.

I visited the cinema a couple of weeks ago for the first time in years, we paid £10 each and that included a meal before hand. I thought the value was ok but the cinema itself was a little poor to be honest.. It certainly made me realise why I don't bother! At least I enjoyed the meal .

Its 25% off on a Tuesday which makes it £3.00 for all non 3D films. If you use your Odeon club card you get discount on that. That makes it £2.25.

Went to see Avengers at IMAX in Birmingham yesterday and it cost around £11.50 per ticket, including the 75p booking fee. I think if it wasn't a 3D movie then it would cost around £9.50.

The other cinemas in the area around around £6-£7 a ticket. Was talking to some colleagues the other day and one of their local cinema charges £15 for a premium seat. That's not even in a big city!

Exclamation

Hi,

My local arthouse cinema, which also shows many of the blockbuster/mainstream releases also, charges just £6-50 for an adult ticket, or £7-75 for a 3D film.

As for why so many cinemas are expensive, it's down to things like:
1) The cost of getting films from the film-distributors. (With so many films now coming in 3D versions, film distributors charge more, than for a bog-standard 2D version, but cinemas usually need to buy/rent one print of each, to give customers the choice.)

2) The minor decrease in cinema attendance.

3) The general price rise in everything else (e.g. fuel bills) in recent months.

The other main reason, is that a cinema's main source of profit, is from the sale of food and drink. A cinema, may make about 10-15% off of every ticket sold. The rest is split-up between the makers of the film, and the distributors. As distributors and makers demand better deals (that is, more profits), so they demand cinemas pay higher fees to rent/buy prints (digital or 35mm). This extra cost, is then passed on to the customer.

The sad fact is, that whilst cinema attendance is still very good, and one of the very few forms of entertainment that can make a profit, during recessions, it's pricey to get films onto screens. Moreso, since every cinema was pretty much forced to go digital, or to convert at least one screen into digital.

Ultimately, the blame lies with the film distributors and makers, who want more money for letting cinemas show CLASH OF THE TITANS, TRANSFORMERS, HARRY POTTER, etc, etc in 3D, despite the fact that the vast majority of 3D films don't make any more profit than their 2D siblings! (And often make substantially less profit, when a film is released in both 3D and 2D at the same time!)

Yep, that's my take on it too. For the first hour of any film it's like sitting in the middle of a deafening Pringles' advert with all the eating noises going on. Ruins it for me even before all the other stuff. On top I always seem to get the person who thinks it's OK to kick the back of my seat throughout. I stopped going years ago except for the biggest of films.

Prices round here are a rip-off for the family. I buy the film cheaper later on, get to see it multiple times without the ensemble of chavs.

They will have a 25% off tickets on a Tuesday. My local is the cheapest Odeon in the UK.

I have 3 different cinemas near me that all offer £3.00 on a Tuesday.

If you go more than once a month to a cineworld it's worth getting the unlimited card. IIRC it's £17 a month and you can go as many times as you like for no extra charge (other than 3D).

They also run deals for unlimited customers on the food a drink

I don't worry though, my girlfriend works there and gets 2 free tickets a day and something like 40% of the food and drink.

Other than the concluding chapter of Nolan's Batman trilogy, I do not plan on seeing any other picture this year. Can happily wait a few months for the disc release, as the turnaround is increasingly shorter these days

Always makes me think "highest grossing film xyz record" are meaningless given it takes no account of inflation or rising ticket prices. The industry should be open and release attendance figures

People seem luckier than me for prices then. I'm in Kent. That price is 2D as well. From what i remember 3D is £1-2 more and then more again if you've lost or haven't gotten a pair of the glasses.

The unlimited card is good and I used to have one but there seems to be so much crap on now a days that I struggle to justify being stuck in a 12month contract again for one.

I think we paid £12.50 a ticket for vue extreme. Throw in some nasty popcorn and a drink each and it's nearly £40. No wonder we hardly ever bother going to the cinema these days.

Don't know why anyone pays for food in a cinema. We get a family bag of starmix at the local garage on the way and the kids get orange squash in a drinks bottle.

Totally refuse to be ripped off for the crazy prices in house. Wouldn't mind paying a fair price but the markup is just crazy

Kids moaned to start with but I then told them they could use their pocket money to buy the pick n mix. One visit made them realise how silly the cost was
