Re laminate floors, a gentle reminder for all of you to steer clear of my house renovation thread for a while...

Seriously though, when you need to floor an entire 1900 square foot house, and you're going to have 3 dogs running around it, solid floors just aren't an option!

Short hair and casting constantly.

But in terms of wear and tear from running around on it, plus occasional risk of scratching if their claws are too long, not to mention the cost of solid wood, mean it's just impractical.

Plus I don't mind laminate. I mean if we're talking the cheapo £5.99 a metre mush from B&Q or something, fair enough! But the cheapest of the 4 we have for the house was £14 square metre. Cheapest decent solid one we found was £30. To do our entire house in solid would cost the best part of £10k!

Their are lots terraced houses here in halifax with lovely wide floorboards,real character timber which could be sanded ,laquered and treated,and look really ,really good,in keeping with the property.

Unfortunately people ,go the easy route and ruin character properties with ghastly modern materials..

When looking at houses recently estate agents gleefully tell you to look at the lovely laminate,and new mdf kitchen,and then expect the buyer to pay exorbitant asking price,when actually all the work has to be done again because it looks horrendous..

Modern builds like your bungalow actually suit newer materials ,i just object to traditional houses ruined in this way...

Shrove Tuesday implies you are about to start Lent. Whereas Pancake Day is just about eating pancakey goodness. So people should choose the one that implies to them.

Ah, sorry, I misread your other post. We had a short haired Jack Russell that moulted white hairs (we lost her just before Christmas) and the thought of putting carpet down everywhere was a non-starter! (Expensive) floor tiles mostly and some laminate just to keep the cost down when we did it!

The national speed limit on a single carriageway road for a car without a trailer is 60 miles per hour. Not 40. The speed limit in a 30 miles per hour zone is 30 miles per hour. Not 40.

Why do old people drive at 40 mph on wide open roads with no hazards, then maintain this speed through small villages and past schools with kids wandering about?

Morons who sit in the middle lane of a 3 lane motorway. The roads in this country, despite what is perceived are not overcrowded. If everyone used correct lane discipline, there would be loads of road space!

The short walk to my workplace from the station is riddled with smartly dressed woman wearing cheap off colour running shoes............

Obviously this is to prevent sore feet, but come on, they are hideous and it looks stupid............

The sentence above. I don't think its okay to drive at 20mph below the limit, creating a huge tailback. If a driver has to drive slower because they don't feel confident to match the speed of traffic, they either need to stop driving, or have additional training.

Speed does not kill. Inappropriate speed kills. As per my original remark on this; 40mph outside a school....

I walk and run for fitness, I can also ride a horse. How that is relevant to bad motorway lane discipline, I'm not sure?

I agree that it's not an effort to go around another car on the motorway, but I'd say that its also not any effort to move back to the left hand side when your overtake is complete. It is bad driving. End of.

yep that is so true.

The Government and police have got it into their heads that they are doing a good job by catching as many people as they can who are going above the speed limit. it is not the case.

Accidents happen because people don't know when they can go fast and when they cannot.

I have fun out on the bikes with my brother and friends and in the car it is always a good trash about on the odd nice days we have here in the UK.
We have been up to speeds of 140-160 and no accidents, but that's because we are not doing it while drunk or trying to undertake someone in a 30 zone or something stupid like that.

we pick and choose our moments e.g. on a big streatch of motorway which is empty near my house you can hit your top speed with ease and there are some nice roads/dual carrages near me in St Albans where you can hit high speeds on bends with a great view of what is coming up.

People just got to start getting smarter about how they drive and where they want to do stuff like that.

I'm appearing in court on Monday for getting caught at 101mph on a single carriageway road. The road was very straight, very wide, good vis, (er, still missed the camera van) , no junctions, I maintain that I was driving safely at the time - both hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, looking for hazards ahead, blah blah blah. Bottom line - I got caught, so I gotta take it on the chin! I set up a thread in the motoring section which I'll update after Monday...
