We offer you

I get 3 or 4 calls a day from an "out of area" number from a company calling themselves "we offer you". They want to confirm who my electricity supplier is.

I refuse to tell them as it's none of their business.

It is always a foreign caller, who when I asked once where he was calling from, said "Manchester", then after a short pause, "United".

Does anyone know of a way of finding out who they are, or how I can stop the calls. I am registered with the TPS, and when I pointed that out, was told they don't give a ****. Googling didn't get me anywhere.

They have even (mis)quoted the Data Protection Act at me,failing completely to understand what the DPA is for.

On a matter of principle there is no way I am going to tell them now.

Exclamation

Hi,

You may have to contact your phone service provider, and ask them to block the calls (or at least sift through every call you get, before they patch it through to your phone).

Failing that, call your local Trading Standards office, who may be able to offer some help.

Other than that, or changing your number, there's not much else you can do once a company has your number, and they withhold theirs.

I'm pretty sure that BT block persistent nuisance calls, though I have never had to think about using it so not sure what the criteria is

I remember I once registered with a "privacy" website and the nuisance and junk calls virtually stopped to my number. I cant remember the site but somebody will know. It is well known. I think it is called the telephone preference service, from a bit of google.

Sorry re-read the original post and you are already registered with the TPS. Its certainly not full proof, more is the pity.

TPS have no control over calls made from abroad. You can have a 'last number barring' service with some providers but it's chargable and relies on them actually leaving their number. if they don't you can reject anonymous numbers as well, but there's usually a charge for that too!

Hi- I used to get lots of these types of calls every day. The easy way is to change your number, have it withheld and go ex directory. I did this about ten months ago and things have been great since. Its not that big a deal to give your new number out to the people who matter, all you then have to do is be selective with any oneelse you give your number. Dosent cost anything either.

Thanks all. I think I'll get my number changed. It seems the only way to go.

We have our phone line set to reject anonymous calls, and I honestly can't remember the last time we had a call like this.

Only problem with that is say a family member or friend uses a new mobile phone set (by default) to not show the number.
