Fixings for plasterboard?

What sort of fixings should I use on plasterboard? My walls plasterboard with a cavity behind before the brickwork, and I want to mount my rear surround speakers (Mission M7DS, weigh about 2 and a half Kg each I think) but not sure what fixings to use?

Likewise, I have a metal picture frame I also wanna hang. On the other walls, where pictures have been hung (these fixings were there when I moved in) are metal things that sit in the plasterboard and a screw turns into them. Seems a little hardcore for pictures, but then, the frame isn't that light, so maybe I should be using something like that?

Anyone advise me, as I no nothing about plasterboard! I've only ever fixed stuff to proper brickwork in the past, with proper rawl plugs etc

Re: Fixings for plasterboard?

You can get these screws with a plastic bit attached to them that as you turn the screw the plastic open out at the back which forms a "T" behind the plasterboard to hold it in place.

These should be fine for a picture frame but you may need something more substantial for speakers.

Re: Fixings for plasterboard?

The plasterboard is fixed to wood battens. For the speakers which are fairly heavy, I suggest you find where the wood battens are and fix the speaker mountings using wood screws.

Tapping the plasterboard wall with your finger will indicate where the battens are.

Of course, do not mount anything directly above a power socket!

Re: Fixings for plasterboard?

No probs with 2.5kg speakers. Stronger than the plaster board itself. I've fixed heavier things with them. I guess you can get them in DIY places as well as Screwfix. Don't get the plastic version though.

I use something similar but the Tox plugs act differently depending on the thickness of the plasterboard / type of material. They open up like regular rawlplugs on thick material, form a knot behind the board on another or open up in the form of a cross behind the board.

I have about 16 of these holding my Panny on my plasterboard wall, and IIRC only picked up 4 holes in the actual wooden stud. I can hang off the bracket and it does not budge at all. I'm a damn lot heavier than my Plasma too, so doubt if it will ever come down like that dodgy advert

They are an industrial type plug with pretty big screws. They are available in Clerkenwell screws and cost about £10 for 100 plugs and screws which makes them about 1000% cheaper than B&Q

IMO those metal screw type plasterboard fittings have always failed in my house so i'd advise against them

Re: Fixings for plasterboard?

I would use the redidrivas type for hanging your pictures (they are okay) but for the speakers i would use this type http://www.screwfix.com/prods/18266/...3mm-Pack-of-10

Re: Fixings for plasterboard?

These are expensive but brilliant, I have a TV in the kitchen attached to a cavity plaster board wall. They fix into the brick behind the cavity!

Well I had a go at fitting them and they seem fine!

I couldn't get to a screw fix, so I had a route through my drawers and found a box of Thermalite fixings;

Thought I'd give em a go, worst that could happen is they wouldn't take so I'd get some of the metal ones linked above

So I drilled the plasterboard with an 8mm bit, screwed these in with the supplied tool and then screwed a self tapper into them. Gave them a good hard pull and they didn't budge, so I hung the speakers off them, and they seem totally fine! Time will tell I guess to see if they "sag" in the plasterboard, but I reckon they'll be fine.

Only problem is the speaker wire dangling. Then I noticed the walls are pretty much the same colour as a role of masking tape So for the time being, that'll work
