Why are there so many nasty people?

Just got thinking about this recently. Unfortunately I suffered an attack myself last new years and ended up in A&E with a broken nose (3 people on 1, totally unprovoked)

Since then I haven't returned to the place where it happened, and it's definitely affected me psychologically as well as physically.

Now on halloween me and some friends got started on for no reason whilst waiting for a taxi, tried jacking my mates camera and money... this one guy was a total nutter and was telling us how pleasantly he's going to stab me. Eventually it seems to calm down but then another bloke tries jumping in our cab and we politely tell him it's full and he starts calling us all kinds of names and smacking the cab!

And now the other day reading about Genie1, obviously a million times worse I'm not trying to compare to what happened to that poor guy.

I just can't understand the mentality of these people!? Can't believe they've got a lovely old granny to hug, or a a pet to stroke. Is it drugs that make people this angry?

So your comfortable with the fact that you could be arrested and get yourself a criminal record through something that may never happen to you

Re: Why are there so many nasty people?

the knife is under 3" so its legal.

don't get me wrong, i wouldn't stab someone unless they were seriously threatening my health, if a mugger told me to hand over my wallet i would but if he then attacked me regardless i would stab him.

You're not worried that he'd take it away from you and then you'd be the one getting stabbed?

You silly little sod.

Do you think you know what it is like to kill someone at close quarters.

I beg you to throw that knife away.

Trust me such is the way of things, it would be you who went to prison, not any aggressor.

Please ditch the knife.

Great, so you carry a knife and people wanting to mug decide that since people are carrying knives it's best to cut you up first before you get a chance to use it. Meanwhile other people trying to get on with their lives find that rather than being mugged (which is bad enough!) they are much more likely to get VERY seriously injured or killed because of idiots who think like you.

...thanks for that.

What we really really need in a society where binge drinking and casual violence is becoming the norm is for people to carry WEAPONS!

Re: Why are there so many nasty people?

Hi Teetsie

Anwarsadat is quite right.

If you were attacked by a mugger and you pulled your 3" knife and stabbed him you could end up in prison. Also, your attacker could sue you for damages after you are found guilty!

Criminal record - loose job and many doors are closed.

if you are there leading with the knife loosely in your hands its possible but obviously i wouldn't do that so the chance of someone taking a knife off me is nill.

Re: Why are there so many nasty people?

I see your point weetsie, but you are forgetting that people are usually out numbered when attacked. Your Knife will do nothing against more than one person, apart from annoy your attackers into thinking they might as well use it on you.

I emplore everyone to take a few self defence lessons. It may save your life, and you don't need years of training to be able to make a smack head think twice about mugging you after you have landed a punch of kick on them and you look confident and like you know what your doing.

Just take up a martial art of some kind for a few weeks over the winter period. Its a lot more fun than going to a gym and you stay just as fit.

Most attackers / muggers are looking for an easy target. Don't become one.

the thing you are forgetting is that i choose whether to or not to take the knife out of my pocket. its just like not having a knife except you can have it if you want it.

Oh dear what a world we live in now, have you never heard of a never ending circle?

You're far more likely to get stabbed by your own knife.

Most attacks happen at the end of the night, when the pubs or clubs have closed, there is always violence when waiting for taxi's or at a takeaway place.

Best to plan your night - leave sightly early!

Have you been in a lot of fights before? Have you ever stabbed someone before or attacked them in such a way as you intended to do them serious harm?

Sorry to hear of what's happened to you. I'd say it's pretty much alcohol causing this. You don't often see fights and the police arresting people in town centres at midday because most of the population are sober at that time.

We could do with adopting a more european approach to alcohol and drink it during a meal instead of on it's own, that I feel would help to some extent. I can't see it happening though.

No, unfortunately it's in our culture. People generally feel the need to consume large amounts of alchohol to have a good time. It's never appealed to me, but I think I'm in the minority.

Re: Why are there so many nasty people?

Similar thing happened to me last year when i was in edinburgh watching the fireworks. Was there with a mate then this drunk guy staggers over and stands next to me and then trys to start talking to us whist he is trying to roll up a fag. We decide not to get invloved so just ignore him. He then starts to get very angry at this so starts threatning me at which point my mate just says we dont want to talk just leave us alone. To this the guy quite explicity tells us that we are not the sort of people he wants to talk to and if we are an example of society he would happily blow our brains out then he walks off.

Quite glad i hardly ever drink so would never get in to that state.

Re: Why are there so many nasty people?

Wow this thread didn't exactly go the way I was planning lol. Weetsie, I think you're completely in the wrong. I used to have a mate that carried a knife, then he moved on to mace spray, and he did eventually use it during an attack, and nearly went down for it. If attackers start seeing a lot of members of public with knives, then they will have to up their game to mug people next time... meaning they will carry knives themselves or, unfortunately, guns which seem to be on the up. Just the other week that same place where I got beaten up, eight people were arrested for firing a gun in the car park.

I do too... but to me getting in a fight is not a good time! Laugh, dance, get some grub, go home my face is ruined for the rest of my life now, and what does the other guy get outta it? Can brag to his mates I guess (he never even went to court about it as there was no active CCTV pointing in the direction of the attack)

Re: Why are there so many nasty people?

When I lost the plot a bit I was sectioned and stuck in hospital secureley for 6n months when infact I was scared like a mouse and wouldn't have harmed a flea much preferring to do a runner into the countryside where no one was around....
whereas so often over the years I have come across ***** who were total psychos brandishing knives or whathaveyou and always ready to pull it out and slash or stab someone

these people should be subdued chemically I feel but oh no they are left to prowl

Re: Why are there so many nasty people?

The Americans fall into a similar trap, they think having guns makes them safer. Certain societies with the right mentality can own guns even, I believe Canada has high gun ownership but not the same problems as America (at least according to Michale Moore "Bowling for Columbine"). People in our society should stick purely to their fists (if they really can't help their violent tendencies) imo.

dont need to.

if you are there leading with the knife loosely in your hands its possible but obviously i wouldn't do that so the chance of someone taking a knife off me is nill.
I hope you dont mind me asking but how old are you (because you are behaving like a daft child)?

Even though it's legal so long as it doesn't have a locking mechanism you could still be arrested for carrying an offensive weapon.

EDIT: Taken from the British Blades FAQ on their forum.

Q: Is "self defence" a good reason?
A: Absolutely not! If you are carrying a knife for self defence, by definition you are carrying the knife as a weapon. Not only are you guilty of carrying a bladed article, contrary to s139 of The Criminal justice Act 1988, but you are also guilty of the more serious offence of carrying an offensive weapon.
