Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums?

I personally feel that they don't offer anything, and always end up closed in the end.

Would you like to see them banned from the forums?

re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums?

Religion - yes and no ... I'm really not interested if it's just espousing a certain viewpoint ... because some of us have a faith, some of us don't (such as myself), some of us aren't sure, so ideally we should just all respect that ... but when it comes to discussing RS in education, prominent individuals, events in the news, why not? ... as long as it doesn't descend into the (usual) atheism vs religion posts by you know who

Politics - no ... because, quoting Ricky Gervais, politics is everywhere; it would certainly seep into many seemingly non-political threads

I presume by "race", you mean "immigration" threads, which I'd also view as politics; if someone actually posted something highly inflammatory and racist it would certainly be reported/slapped down/dealt with by a mod

I just don't see any threads containing anything you've mentioned as useful in any way, all they do is cause people to stress out, and ignite arguments.

I would bet my life on no thread ever staying civil once race, religion, immigration, politics etc is brought up.

I really do feel that we all joined this site with one common interest and we should focus on that interest rather than focus on "differences" between us.

General chat should be a light hearted place where we can post off topic ramblings, not indepth chit chat that really benefits no one.

It's just a load of yeah but no but yeah but, verbal diarrhea tennis that no one wins.

Re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums

No, I think its important touchy subjects such as race and religion are discussed.

We live in a global community now, where everything has changed and its changing so fast. And a lot of people don't like it.

Many people feel marginalised by mainstream politics and what they see in the streets, and in their frustration are turning to parties like the BNP.

If we don't talk and let off some steam now and then, things could get out of hand so quickly

Re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums

This question is a microcosm of what went on last night. A turkey shoot by a wound up audience, and panel to some degree, so sensitised to any form comment/discussion on race, religion or creed that when anyone who has dropped as many clangers as Nick Griffin on the record they'd be eaten alive.

It wasn't a debate, it was a scramble for the moral high ground. And pathetic to watch.

From what I could see Griffin would have floundered in a level-headed debate. The fact the show turned out to only have one agenda will allow him to state he was never given a chance.

I'd have aired this opinion on the other thread, but it was closed.

So perhaps the OP's question is academic. Because it looks like the answer is they are banned already.

Re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums

definatly not

its always good to learn something from someone who has a different perspective to yourself

now banning the far right, far left, indoctrinated religious bigots who spout dogmatic rhetoric may be of some value since in there closed minded world they are always right and therefore bring nothing to a conversation.

Re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums

those are the worst three topics to mod, so i'd personally like them banned, or like other forums i've seen, move politics and religion to it's own seperate subforum with it's own dedicated mods who have the time and interest to mod there

the main problems with those topics is people will often post passionately from one point of view, followed by another person with conflicting passionate views, and the arguement starts to snowball. rarely will anyone accept and agree to the opposite view, so the threads usually turn in pages and pages of boring reading to the outsider or mods. perhaps that's moreso with politics. with religion/race it's usually a matter of time until someone posts something that's insulting to someone else

as so many members come from different races and religions, usually any thread that's critical of a particular race or religion ends up upsetting someone, and for example the number of "muslim" threads criticising the religion must surely be unpleasant to the thousands/millions of muslim readers (with 4 million visitors a month, it's not unrealistic that perhaps a quarter may be muslim? or at least tens or hundreds of thousands)

having to wade through some of these threads that snowball like wildfire can be a right pain at times, as some of the postings turn into essays or full of multiple quoted posts, and i personally find it boring, and it's difficult trying to edit or bring back on topic something that has so many posts, which is why they usually get closed

Now this is a prime example of why they should be banned.

This "ban anything I dont agree with" rubbish. Plus the fact that the first part of the comment totally contradicts the second !!, tell me how do you learn anything if all you ever hear are people who agree with you ??

I am as guilty as most and have bitten the hook on many an occasion. It cant be fun for the Mods as they are never going to win, and the easiest way to avoid these verbal pile ups is to not let them start. Prevention is better than cure.

I would rather see discussions like "Jaffa Cakes .. Cake or Biscuit ??" .. "Do men have a secret sense that directs their eyes to a thong flash ??" .. "Blimping .. The lost art of appreciating the female form without them knowing" .. "X Factor .. Is it a solution for Insomniacs who dont respond to Drugs" .. "Do YOU air guitar when no one is looking ??" .. etc etc.

The forum should be lighthearted and a place to unwind, not a place to come and argue. I am sick of the racial, political and religious views to be honest.

Re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums

I think only if the site owner or mods want it banned it should be, for everyone else don't read the threads if you don't like the subject.

I do think that insults, threats and racism are unjustifiable, but everything else should be OK.

im talkin about the extremists, 90% of ppl you meet who have faith / political conviction are perfectly capable of holding a cogent conversation with out spouting rhetoric at you, and these people i enjoy reading there posts, I get to read many different arguments / perspectives on subjects here that i just don't come across in the 3D world.

and you should have seen my locked posts thread, it was imba, till someone with zero sense of humour deleted it ..

Re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums

There are hundreds if not thousands of forums dedicated to these topics so I would agree too removing them from AVF also.

Besides, if you do not agree to the majority here you become a minority and judged on your political viewpoint. I bet some agree to vote for a certain party or dislike certain religions but dare not say so just to keep the peace and not be chastised.

We don't allow it in the local

Would you like to see them banned from the forums?

C'mon people it doesn't matter what colour someone is, or what others think, let's just chillax

edit:could a mod please fix the typo, I missed the second i in religious
heck no. AVF offers some of the best discussions on religion based on the fact that all of us here are a great mix of people, nobody is biased on their views and everyone is pretty much mature. If I was to go to the white storm forum "everyone" would just talk about booting out all ethnics from Britain. I know there are some forums that don't discuss religion or politics as per their t&c's.

no dont ban them they are usually ok but then some descend into off colour comments ( is that racist ?).

as for some Mods moaning about the work involved in moderating them, well thats what you signed up for.

incidently where did the BNP threads go i can understand them being locked but they seem to have disappeared

Re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums

Should we ban religious, race or political commentaries from AVF

Maybe apart from race my answer is a firm No!

Most of the contributors on AVF general chat are adults so why can't we talk about politics, race or religion? As long as the posts are controlled correctly by the mods then I can't see no reason to ban these subjects.

A couple of these topics people feel that they cannot talk openly for fear of being tarred with the racist brush!

Talking about these issues (As long as they don't descend into racial/religious mud slinging) has got to be healthy for all concerned.

Anyway I'm off to start a new thread about Bunny Rabbits.

Re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums

I think there should either be a ban, or a subforum within general chat that people can choose to avoid/ visit as they wish.

I'm fed up with robust, enjoyable threads on important issues being started then closed at the merest ghost of a chance that someone might be offended- or because a moderator takes issue with a comment. Were all adults here for crying out loud.

I've participated in a dozen or more political or religious threads, and they are the most informative, enjoyable and spirited threads on GC by a mile. I have learned a lot from them and have been inspired to research and learn more. Surely to goodness this is a good thing??

Yes there are specific forums dedicated to this stuff- but part of the fun of General chat is that we are all normal everyday people with opinions. Many of us are not experts and GC is the perfect arena for learning what we don't know and expressing our views on politics/ religion without taking a degree in either.

As for 'offence', I can honestly say I saw more flameage, personal attacks and infractions/ mod comments in the first 3 pages of the Michael Jackson thread than in all the religious threads I've seen combined.

Re: Would you like to see religious, race and politician threads banned from avforums

I had a massive discussion/argumentation thread closed on an Islamic Website which is popular in the UK. It was a damn shame as other members are just led to believe in a set of veiws and anyone opposing them is just banned or the thread is deleted. I was infurriated.

It was funny in the way as the guy refused to answer my questions just clinging to his rediculous accusation that I was a secularist and a Kufar 'someone who betrays Islam and is no longer considered a 'Muslim'. These extremists just breed on other forums and if the mod feels that someone is writing or portraying something which is of concern then they should issue a ban or suspend their account whilst they cool off. But thankfuly I have never come accross a religious/political based thread which has ended up like that
