Anyone who has been on an 18-30 holiday would know that 8 hours is only a warm-up to serious binge drinking.

I'm not condoning it, just pointing out that it's not unusual.

He did say less sympathetic to be fair. I was thinking along the same lines as you though, could have happened to me in my younger years. Sleeping on your side probably saves a lot of people from a similar fate.

He was on holiday and these things happen. Nobody knows the specifics.

Fair enough if it was an alcohol related death to an alcoholic who had drank them self to death despite warnings but by all accounts it's an unfortunate accident.

I think the fact it was an "8 hour binge" is irrelevant, anything over the recommended limit per day is classed as a binge these days and nobody knows what he's drank to really pass judgement.

We all know how reliable as a source the Sun is but there is nothing unusual at all for a guy of his age, he was holidaying in Spain and living it up. Like dazza said, could have happened to anyone... When I was younger on holidays I can 'just about remember

' 9 hour evening sessions for 14 days running consuming copious amounts of alcohol, you simply don't consider the possibility of dying as a result.

Sounds like a freak accident, I gather the autopsy is planned for tomorrow so nobody will know any more until that time.

Sky News reports that Police are searching for a Bulgarian guy who apparantly returned to Gately's apartment after the drinking session.

Ohh come on. He went out and got ******. It's an accident he never went out to get ****** and kill himself (As far as we know) If he did that would be self inflicted.

A self inflicted alcohol death would be someone needing a liver transplant going out and drinking a litre of whisky.

Ain't that the truth, bunch of crooks that 18-30 lot, I remember our lads holiday to Malia years back. They started plying you with ouzo first thing in the morning so they can fleece you out of money to go on their rubbish excursions.

The think I find ironic is that you have the likes of Ozzy Osbourne who went on massive benders that last decades including crazy amounts of booze and drugs and manage to make it out alive. Stephen Gately does what I am sure most of us have done many times in our lives and gets unlucky.

Just listening to Irish radio at the moment, and a representative of the family has called into a radio station to clear up some stories.

Regarding the 8 hr drinking session, this guy is saying that he was on the phone to his family on Sat night after 12, in good form but sober, and told them he was going into Palma (about an hour away). He was then back in the apartment before 6am.

Also, he is saying that the police aren't looking for anyone else. He does say that a family friend was in the apartment, but that this was nothing more than a tragic death.

So what is an '8 hour session'? Six until 2 in the morning?

I've no idea if he was falling-over drunk, but it's easy to see how you could go out for a night for that long and not be drunk.

Out at 6 - take it easy and have a couple of beers until 8. Walk to the restaurant and get seated for 8:30. Share a bottle of wine over a meal, which you don't finish until 10:30. That's four and a half hours up and you've only had 2 pints and half a bottle of wine.

Of course, he might have been necking back 3 pints an hour with nothing to eat, but just because he went out from 6 until 2 doesn't mean too much in itself.
