NASA blowing up the moon!

I'm fed up of people banging on about this on Facebook and in general conversation...
I can't believe so many people honestly think that NASA is going to "blow up" the moon. Do they really believe that they'd be that stupid?

For anyone who hasn't heard of what is going on:
Parts of the LCROSS will be sent to collide with craters near the south pole on lunar surface of the moon at about 6,000mph, this will send up a load of dust and some are hoping some ice about 6 miles high. If water is found that means there is the possibility of oxygen and hydrogen (air and fuel)

People worrying about the moon being "blown up" need to take a look at those big old nasty meteors and try do something to stop them from blowing the moon up too!

peoples stupidity never ceases to amaze me, tbh i often wish global warming does wipe us out, the avg person is to stupid to justify existence.

k so this 60 foot crater is going to destroy a 2200 mile diameter rock ..

oh i know they are going to split the moon in two and send it each side of the earth

Re: NASA blowing up the moon!

I was telling a girl in the Office about this and she asked if it would be visible from Earth. I said that if she took a pair of bincoulars out into the car park and got a clear view of the moon she might well do.

If she tries it, I stand to win a tenner. Then again I once convinced her there was no such word as gullible in the dictionary and she came back with one in hand saying "Yes there is !!, look ... "

I have a feeling that money is mine already.

Is it a coincidence that they were showing re-runs of Space 1999 on ITV4 this morning?

Not as much fun as a good wind up is it ??

She is outside now with a pair of regular bino's looking for a gap in the clouds. Its full cloud cover here and looking like its about to rain. I have spent the last two minutes pointing to imaginary gaps in the clouds and watching her spin like a top trying to see them. God bless her she is a gentle soul and one of life's genuinely nice people but she falls for every wind up. I am going to get her as she is very obviously cold and the Boss just may think she has lost the plot if they ask her what she was doing.

Plus I have won the tenner anyway ..

Re: NASA blowing up the moon!

Eureka!!
I've worked out why they want to blow up the moon.
It must be a conspiracy between the oil companies and NASA!

They are trying to blow the moon out of earth orbit so that we loose our tidal waterways and Oceans so that alternatives to fossil fuels ie wave power doesn't stand a chance!

Cheeky gits them oil conglomerates!

Re: NASA blowing up the moon!

If the moon has resources which we can use as fuel we should find a way to mine it effectively...same for the other planets...we need to get out there and exploit these resources.

They just asked the expert what they were looking at and he questioned whether the cameras were calibrated properly ( I guess they saw nothing either )

He's now explaining what we should have been able to see...

It does, and we are trying to get out there to exploit them, especially the (apparent) abundance of Helium-3.

Re: NASA blowing up the moon!

Destroyed! By the empire!

Seriously though, as the lunar surface attests, the moon has endured incalulable mega-bombardments from space- the worst of it duing the period of heavy bombardment 4 billion years ago. It is quite intact.

Our paltry missiles don't have anywhere near the destructive capacity to shatter the moon. In fact I doubt our entire nuclear arsenal could be enough.

It would take a thousand ships with more firepower than I've...

Well I knew what we were meant to be looking for, but either the NASA cameras were not able to show it, or it didn't quite have the effect intended (plum of dust)

NASA persuaded the world's media to cover this live in the expectation it was going to be some visually worthwhile event - otherwise, why give over 10 minutes of live TV to stare at the moon?

In that respect, it seems to have been a spectacular failure.

However, from a scientific point of view it may still be a spectacular success. Just a bit boring for the rest of us to watch...
