Fitting a back boiler

I have a bare fireplace in my lounge that has been piped for a gas fire. However, I've decided to get a woodburner instead of a gas fire. A couple of people I have told asked if I was putting in a backboiler, as apparently it can save quite a bit of money over time heating the downstairs radiators.

My question is, how difficult and expensive is it to install a boiler to my existing oil heating system? What is involved in the installation?

The room this will be going into still has a bare concrete floor, and nothing at all has been done to the room since the house was built. I'm having a radiator moved to a different wall, and will also be channelling into the floor to run cables for my av set-up, so I don't mind a bit of dust and upheaval in that one room.

Re: Fitting a back boiler

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a condensing boiler? What will it do that the back boiler won't?

As I've said, I don't mind some upheaval in the 1 unfurnished room where the woodburner is going, but I'm reluctant to do anything if it means tearing the rest of the house apart.

Presently we have a oil system, with zones for upstairs and downstairs, as well as heating the water. My understanding of the back boiler is that we would be able to heat the downstairs whenever the fire is on, thus saving money running the oil.

Is this correct?
