I've become a statistic.

On Friday afternoon I got a call from my boss telling me that the company I work for has gone into administration. The company had quite a bit of stock which we were hoping to be able to sell off, but today I got another call to say over the weekend the premises were broken into and all stock has been cleaned out. So today I guess that makes me unemployed.

As well as my job, I used to have interests in 2 other companies, but eventually had to relinquish those due to a perceived clash of interests, so for the first time in I don't know how long I've nothing to do. It feels very weird sitting here not being able to do any work.

The industry I work in has taken a huge hammering in the recession, so finding another job may not be easy. I have 1 possible job that I'm waiting to hear back on, but if that doesn't come off.....I'm screwed.

Re: I've become a statistic.

I'm not too dejected yet as I'm hopeful this other job will come off and I should hear in the next day or two.

If it doesn't, then it's time to start worrying.

Re: I've become a statistic.

Just had a call from the administrator to say I won't be getting paid this month, and that forms are in the post.

Has anyone any experience of these forms? Am I likely to get back everything I'm owed?

Sorry to hear this Dony but this doesn't sound right to me. Company goes in to administration and then gets "cleaned out" the day after ! You haven't been paid but someone will be earning off the assets !

Re: I've become a statistic.

Me too - been there, done that, played that game. I've had to change career so many times. Now I'm self employed - mostly because at 57, I'm too old to get a "proper job". There is aways a way of earning a crust though.

On Friday when the word spread amoung customers and suppliers, creditors arrived with lorries and started taking stock. The police were called. Then on Saturday the rest went.

The premises are in a different country to me, so I've no idea if it was people who were owed money came back, or something else.

Re: I've become a statistic.

Its simply the way it is. Once news breaks of a company going under everything and anything not bolted down gets carried out. What kind of stock are we talking if you don't mind me asking......or was it high value ?

Re: I've become a statistic.

Sorry to hear the news mate. Sickening you won't get your last pay check either. Will you get any redundancy out of the government?

I lost my job in May this year and so I know how you feel. Hope the new job offer comes through for you.

Took me about 6 months to get a small proportion of wages I was owed when I was made redundant 10 years ago. Sorry to hear about your situation, hope you sort something out soon.

Re: I've become a statistic.

Thanks for all the support guys.

Regarding redundancy, I will get £350 per each full year I worked.....I worked 2 yrs and 51 weeks, so will miss out on getting a full 3 yrs worth. This is nothing compared to what I'm owed in wages, commissions, and personal expenses.

Regarding the other job, I'm fairly confident that I'll be offered it tomorrow, but this is with a new company so there is quite a bit of risk with it. Fingers crossed it will work out.

Commiserations on your circumstances.

Good luck with other job option
BUT if it doesn't - remember to sign on, if only to ensure that your NI contributions remain continuous - re : eventual pension.

Because the company went into administration won't you have to claim for your wages via the Administrator? How can they pay redundancy?

Having never been in this position before, I don't really know how things work.An information pack should arrive today explaining what I need to do.

The redundancy I mentioned above is Government statutory redundancy.

Re: I've become a statistic.

I'm no expert but there is a kind of hierarchy as to who gets paid first out of the companie's assets. I think the tax man comes first, then its employees. After that, it suppliers and last of all shareholders. I'm not sure exactly what the order is, but employees are near the top of the list to receive any money that there might be.

When I was made redundant 12 years ago, it was £210 for each year worked. So I got £2,100 for 10 years service (about what I was earning a month in those days). It is tax free though.

Sorry to hear this. Worth having a look on the government benefits website to get an understanding of what your entitled to claim. I only get £50 a week working tax credit but it really helps I find that payment during a difficult time.

Re: I've become a statistic.

Your rights if your employer is insolvent : Directgov - Employment

that link might help, and you can also speak to ACAS. regarding redundancy pay, i think you need to make a claim for it and await the payment from the government, that is if the company is insolvent and doesn't have the funds to pay the redundancy pay. i'm not sure how long you have to wait, but perhaps with a bit of googling you might find out, however ACAS or the administrator may know as they will be used to being asked this question before

the next link has a phone number you can also try
