Is there a decrease of family run bakeries in your area?

After 20 years going to a local famly run bakers they decided to sell up due to retirement. A few weeks later the new owners now have changed the style and produce sold in the shop. They now sell what is obviously cakes which are bought from Costco and sandwiches, pastries and bakery which are delivered from some company.

I'm totally gutted for as long as I can remember every Saturday & Sunday I went in the morning for freshly made vanilla slices and tea-cakes only for the new owners to sell what is worse than the junk they sell in supermarkets. What am I to do now? They were the best vanilla slices in the World!

It's funny however when someone takes over a thriving business which has it's niche in the local market for being renowned for it's family atmosphere, great food, wide variety for some bozo to come in and start selling costco cakes and crossoints and then the business and customers dies down. I won't ever go back to that shop again.

Re: Is there a decrease of family run bakeries in your area?

old style bakers used to work through the night or start really early in the morning to start baking to have stuff ready to sell from 7 or 8am for breakfast, it must be a hard living and not many people want to do it anymore

there are a couple of old bakeries near me that work through the night making rolls, cakes, sausage rolls etc, they still serve to the public through the night so you can stop off after a late night, they usually make rolls that are delivered to newsagents and other places to sell. there's also gregs and tesco express near me, both which do freshly baked goods, and plenty of other local groceries

i remember as a kid doing the paper round really early and getting a cream donut before i started from the bakers, always his first customer of the day. it shut down years ago and turned into a chinese takeaway

We're down to the local farm shop and me. They sell me 12kg bags of locally milled flour and I make my own

5 minutes away ( practically round the corner! ) we have

A tesco ( superstore ), Post office, Natwest/lloyds/barclays banks, greggs, libary, 2 newsagents, a co-op, 2 pubs, a "bits and bobs" sorta tool store, pharmacy, betting agents, hair salon, job centre, dentist & bus stop and 2 schools very nearby.... so not bad here!

Re: Is there a decrease of family run bakeries in your area?

on a related note, a local chippy (The only one my wife would eat from and i do admit their food was better than anywhere else) sold of so the owner could retire.

they kept the staff and changed the hours but their chips stunk! greasy twice cooked and can taste the dirt where they havent washed the potatoes and cleaned the oil!

now only a few months later the original staff have all left and we just cant find a decent chippy. good job i learned to cook good chips myself but there nothing quite like a good chippy!

(oh and they are also over twice the price )

Our local greek owned chippy changed ownership 6 years ago now it's run by chinese. It has took a turn for the worse, the batter is horid, chips seem like they are from a packet where before the owners used cyprus potatoes, home made tarter sauce and a lemon slice is no longer available. But since then a Turksh run chippy has opened near by and their queues are long simply because their fish (cod) are massive

It's not that hard I beleive to make a great living from having a traditional chippy because the ones around here are pants.
