Diagnosed a week ago

Doctor diagnosed me over the telephone.

told me to ride it out and not have tamiflu and see how i went as im usually healthy

3 days passed and im on the phone with difficulty chest wise very heavy breathing.

they gave me tamiflu and today is the last of a 5day course and although i do feel better i feel so HOT and my cough is totally disabilitating.

the breathing is fine if im lying down but i did the washing up earlier and that was really hard to do. i really think tamiflu has helped in some ways but made others worse.

arrgh the amount of people on tv that say its normal flu blah WAIT until you catch it and then say that!

thats where im upto so far and will update the thread

A get better soon to myself

Hope you get well soon.

I think half the problem is that people over use the word flu. My mother used to work in a pharmacy and the number of people who would walk in saying that they had the flu when all they had was a bad cold.
If you REALLY have flu you won't be in a chemist asking for medicine.
Many people think 'it's only flu' and it can't be that bad. What they fail to realise is that real flu will truly knock you sideways. You will NOT be getting out of bed. And by all accounts swine flu is actually quite a mild case as flu goes. The problem with swine flu is that it is VERY contagious so many more people are likley to get it than any normal seasonal flu.

Those people who say it's no big deal it's only flu have probably never actually had real flu. If they had they would realise just how big a deal this flu could be if it spreads to 1/3rd of the population.

To the OP, I am surprised you were diagnosed over the phone.

Is there not an official blood test that needs to be done for Swine Flu? Surely you can't be diagnosed over the phone?

Re: Diagnosed a week ago

blood testing would simply take too long once the symptoms have escalated to this extent. it's now so prevalent that doctors are simply giving tamiflu because it's more likely to be swine flu.

Where have you been!
They can't cope with the number of cases reported so they're dishing it out from filling in an internet web page now.
Note a number of those cases are people who only have a bad cold but there are simply too many new cases for doctors to sort out the colds from the flu and deal with all their other patients as well. So they have had to introduce a faster system which involves telephone and internet diagnosis.

I actually hate my home now im stuck in it
All being done over the phone and IF they prescribe me any more i have to send someone healthy to get it.

Thank god i don't live alone or id be truly in trouble.

As for the swine im still very hot with a chest that feels like someone is hugging me and couging up nasty goo.

Am soldering on the wii has been on overdrive but i can go out and get new batteries for the wiimote

Please. Have you ever had normal flu?

Not the 'Flu type symptoms'. I mean actual flu.

Shivering in bed, hot, but cold, banging headache, all your joints hurt too much to move.

Swine flu is pathetic, right now. It's no more of a threat than normal flu.

The thing is - If we're busy diagnosing Swine Flu over the telephone, and over the internet, in the tab next to the one where we've been googling 'swine flu symptoms'..... is it really any suprise that the UK now has the 'worlds 3rd highest infection rate'?

On the basis of telephone/internet diagnosis, many of the 'swine flu victims' could actually be suffering from Tuberculosis.

- It's lucky for all of us that Tuberculosis went out of fashion years ago.

of course

Spoke to the doctors today and,

Dr - have you finished your tamiflu course
me - yes

Dr - the nasty chest and cough might or might not be a complication and id like you to just rest for 2 more days and if it hasnt let off then "COME UP to the surgery" so i can listen to your chest before we discuss medication.

me - so im allowed out ?you sure i can come up there ?
Dr - well if you only have a high temp and a nasty chest i wold say that you no longer have swine flu and that you would be safe to come up here.

me - Its the breathing thats tough even just standing washing up really makes it a chore to breathe in,

Dr - well rest for a couple more days and see if it settles down. drink plenty.
i hope it eases of for you, good afternoon

Me - thanks doc , byeee.

Ok then a couple days it is.

It is way more of a threat than regular flu because normal flu isn't expected to infect 1/3rd of the population.
Even with a low mortality rate it could still lead to many thousands more deaths than regular flu generates simply because of the number of people it infects.

How can Swine flu be pathetic? More people are getting it than normal flu meaning more people are having difficulties with it. Say that to the faces of those that have children that are ill with it.

Re: Diagnosed a week ago

Are you kidding? 6500 people die from regular flu every year. Even if 1/3 of the UK population gets it, we won't be at any more risk at dying than we would with regular flu.

Not only that? But after we get the H1N1 virus, you will build your immunity up for IF it mutates. To be slightly immune to the new, possibly more dangerous strain.

You guys seriously just buy into all this scare tactics.

If you have kids, sure. Worry. But you should be worrying about normal flu anyways. Albeit this will spread more, and infect more, as It's new.

Ok, just for the sake of argument say the mortality rate of normal flu is 1in1000.
If 6.5million (6,500,000) people catch regular flu then the number of people who die is:-
6,500,000/1000=6,500

6,500 out of a population of 66 million is about 1 in every 10,153 die.

Now, because swine flu is so much more contagious than regular flu 1/3rd of the country is about 22 million. So 1in1000 mortality gives:-
22,000,000/1000=22,000 people die.

22,000 out of a population of 66 million is about 1 in every 3,000 die.

So, just because it's still only 1 in every 1000 cases that die the fact that it is more contagious means that more people will get it. More at risk people will get it. And more people will die.
THAT is what people on here care about. Especially if you or someone you know is in a higher risk group. The chances of coming into contact with swine flu is far greater than coming into contact with regular flu therefore it is of greater concern.

It is of greater concern right now. But it won't infect 1/3'rd of the population. It COULD. But it won't. They have just as much evidence to say the population will get it, to the population not getting it. (1/3 that is.)

Please could you back up your posts with some kind of data and links.

All the epidemiological data I've seen suggest a 1/3 may very well get it.

Back up your posts. I'm not the one stating ludicrous numbers.

The media states 1/3 MAY, or COULD get it. Not that we will. You will notice nothing is concrete with what they're saying.

I really don't think you understand epidemiology.

How can it be concrete? - the very fact that the details are published, will to whatever extent, change the infection rate (eg more people wash their hands). We are dealing with a biological process, subject to random fluctuations: who gets on what aeroplane etc, has your football team signed a new striker (more people at the ground), what's the weather like etc etc etc.

What would you have the government do ?

Quite why you think 30% is unlikely I don't understand - It is after all the infection rate we've experienced in every other flu pandemic. (1957 Asian Flu - 25 -30%, 1968 Hong Kong Flu - 25 -30%). Due to increased travel etc, we should expect infection rates to be higher this time.

Please could you tell me why you think this pandemic is going to behave differently ?

On what authority do you make this claim?

Have you had swine flu and normal flu?
Are you some kind of Dr involved in the studying of Swine flu?
I don't see anything backing up your posts right now either and you're the one palming Swine flu off with an attitude like it's nothing...

Tamiflu is not very effective unless taken within 2 days of first symptoms. I started on it the second day I was feeling bad and after about 8 hours I felt not so bad just tired but no where near as aching

Imagine if our obsession with Swine Flu, and subsequent rush to self-diagnose in order to obtain tamiflu, actually resulted in swine flu mutating into a tamiflu resistant strain....

When I had it a fortnight ago I did not bother going to the Doctor...I just rode it out for 5 days, it was awful but I made it! I also broke a record and achieved my highest temperature ever...40.4 degrees!

This would be helped greatly if people who feel a bit better with tamiflu don't charge off back to work because they feel a bit better.

If swine flu becomes resistant to tamiflu but your own immune defense system beats it eventually anyway then there is no problem.
The problem is if it becomes resistant AND people start spreading this new strain around.

Tamiflu is not a cure it simply slows down the reproduction of the virus to buy your body more time to beat it on it's own.

The exact same thing has happened with our antibiotics. People feel better then stop taking them early and spread a new resistant strain around before they are better.

Swine flu is already becoming resistant to tamiflu. I read of one Australian girl in New Scientist who was found to have a resistant strain of swine flu in her despite the fact that she had not yet been treated with tamiflu.

Re: Diagnosed a week ago

Hello saw the doctor in person and i must say i feel lots better hes put me on strong antibiotics to sort the chest out now hes heard it crunching away

still very snivly and hot and glands in the neck and behind the ear are right bulging which hes assured me is fighting infection.

he said im ok for work monday at last out of this house.

So hopefully mending.

I've read a lot of posts in here that say swine flu isnt all that well ive just had it been through it and it will affect more some than others and i say to you guys i hope it doesnt strike you like it did me because it isnt a joke when you feel that rough. remember all the people on tv stating it isnt nothing are ALL healthy! ask them again if and when they get it in full swing.

Thanks for listening and thanks for the get well support members
Fingers crossed for a clear chest soon.

Blizzard.
