Blu-Ray player or go for a dedicated amp and speaker setup rather than a 'home cinema system'.

If your going the blu ray player path you may as well buy a PS3 as its still the best blu ray player out there for the price!

A blu-ray player (PS3 would be more than fine, for the gaming capabilities as well) and a big plasma TV to enjoy it on! |

PS3 is £250 and uses lots more power and is noisier than a stand alone.

I'd ditch everything in your list except the DVD recorder and laptop:
-Get a PS3
-Buy a bigger, full hd tv
-Dedicated amp & speakers
-Bin the vcr
-Upgrade to £100+ hdmi cable with gold plated connectors
Just kidding on the last one

Regarding the suggestions for buying a PS3 as a Blu ray player. I wouldn't recommend this, as there have been many cases of excessive noise from this console. My unit is very noisy, and I know of two other people here at work who have the same issue. The slim model has similar problems.

Just to balance things out I don't have any issues with using my PS3 as a blu-ray player, it's a 40GB model, without excessive noise, and as far as picture quality goes it's about as good as the stand alone players around the same price at least.
