Can someone help me with a broadband question...

...well to be precise it's to help my niece... She's got her last year at collage and she's moving into rented accommodation with two other girls. They would like to get broadband to share between the three of them. They will want it probably till June next year (I would guess). My niece thinks there is a BT line in the house (I'd be surprised if there isn't) but it will require reconnection.
I wouldn't imagine that the girls are particularly technical and/or would be prepared to do anything in the way of cabling.

Can anyone suggest what the cost effective options are?

Firstly they need to establish if there is a phone line there and what the phone number is.

Then it would be worth putting that number into a site such as samknows.com which will tell you what exchange they are on and what providers they can choose from.

Regardless of who they choose as their provider, the easiest option will be to get a wireless router and then the three girls can share that one connection.

BT generally reconnect lines for free. They do sometimes try to charge some horrendous fee but this is normally waived.

I'm not too sure about broadband packages, squillions about. I guess you'd want one which comes with a free router and no usage restrictions in view of the fact there are 3 users.

3 female student users, who I imagine will not be downloading lots of large, bandwidth consuming files, I think for students who, unless they know will download lots then the main factor is price (after quality of service).

O2 do cheap deals for anyone who has a phone with them, if any of the girls are on O2 and the exchange is enabled for that, it might be a good option to look into

Try Plusnet, they do month by month, so you can cancel at any time.

Yes, but it still might be worth looking at. It's the bottom line which counts, and 9 months from one supplier might not be much less than a 12-month deal from another, especially if there are other goodies thrown in, such as a wireless router and USB dongles.
