Donating Desktop and Laptop PC to charity

Any one with experience doing this, just clearing out my stuff, have an old Dell P4 to shift and an older Toshiba Satellite Laptop (Pentium not sure what model).

Before I think about dumping them, I wonder if a charity could make good use for them in the UK or abroad, I am willing to drop them off or have them collected in the northwest area. I have done some seaches on google but got a mix of charities and diposal services wanting to charge me for the pirivalge of dispoing them

i know a lot of charity shops will refuse to take any electrical items. how about putting them on ebay; you can select a percentage up to 100% of the profits to go to one of your choice

Get free online software that "DESTROYS" data there are some that will Write 1,0 in the open spaces to prevent data recover of your personal info that you delete. using the delete function does not actually remove it until it is physically written over several times.

Active@ Kill Disk. Hard Drives Eraser. Free Download. If I read the info right about this you can use it to Permanently erase all the free space on the hard drive preventing anyone from recovering your data using free software for data recovery
Get their free version

That way no one can take advantage of your generosity by stealing your personal data through data recovery. as far as charities I am in the USA so can't help you there

I meant through dedicated computer charities, you are correct that the charity shops refuse electrical items.

The Ebay route is not an option, we don't have time for packing/shipping etc as we are about to move house.

Re: Donating Desktop and Laptop PC to charity

good man
I personally would suggest pming one of the senior trading mods i.e urban t and ask if you would be allowed to put up a for sale thread with collection only for these items, so no need to worry about sending in the post and ask about having an auction style thread.

One member offes you £20 to start the ball rolling
2nd £30 and so on and so on

Then donate the cash to a charity of your choice im always a bit sussed when it comes to these kind of charitys that you give old goods to clothes computers mobile phones etc etc

Good luck

nice idea, I have just checked the laptops over, and they are seriously old, one doesn't have USB ports !!! So I will dispose of them.

I am left with a Dell Dimension 3000 desktop, but I am just going to post on here as free to collect or charitable donation as I don't think its worth much is it.

the dimension 3000, if it's the machine i'm thinking off, is a P4 3ghz processor with hyperthreading. it takes a max of 2gb ram and you can't upgrade the graphics, but it can play HD material, it's the fastest machine i have at home and what i use connected to my plasma

there were a few refurbs listed on some bargain sites recently and they were snapped up pretty quickly for a little bit over £100

if i could get another one free or cheap like that i'd replace the machine i'm using now which is an older and slower dell that i just use for internet use (would be nice to be able to play music/video at the same time without it going into a fit)

you could list it for £50 plus delivery (which could be £20-£30) and give the money to charity

I don't know the full spec, but I am certain it doesn't have HDMI / DVI Out.

Also the case isn't in brilliant condition. Few marks and scratches.

It is now listed in the classified at £35.

it definately doesn't have hdmi/dvi out, it just has VGA output, the on board card goes up to 1920x1200 but my plasma is only 720p, but with the right codecs and settings it can play 1080p files fine, just make sure you put it on hyperthreading in the bios. add a £15 soundcard and you have digital 5.1 output. it's got one pci-e x1 card but it's only any good for adding another sata controller or similar as you can't get any decent priced graphics cards that are any improvement over the onboard one. it has no AGP either, just two PCI slots. it is a pretty quiet machine

the instructions and specs and drivers can easily be found on the dell website
