Quick heating question

Hi All

I have just ordered some underfloot heating for my renovation project, but I also want to get a gas fire on the wall and have a rug underneath or something (basically a little reading place) but wanted to know how possible this is going to be, I have a conventional radiator on the wall (a water one I guess) but I want to replace it with a wall mounted gas fire, how possible is this, is it just a matter of getting a gas man in to swap a few pipes around by the boiler or is it alot more complex than that?

I'm not to familiar with how heating systems work, I'm from south africa so our heating system is using an extra blanket about 1 month of the year

thanks for any help

Re: Quick heating question

I am not a 'gas man.'

The answer to the question 'is it more complicated than that' is yes it is.
Is the wall that you intend to use, an exterior wall?

Re: Quick heating question

A conventional radiator has 2 water pipes (1 in and 1 out) which go to the boiler. The boiler heats the water which circulates through the radiator. The radiator can be removed and these pipes capped off.

A gas fire needs a gas supply which will probably be the hardest thing to do. Somehow, a pipe needs to be run from the gas main inside the house to where the fire is going to be. Then there is the question of getting rid of the combustion gases. If the fire is going on an outside wall, then some sort of flu is an option. I believe there are also gas fires which can be installed pretty well anywhere and use some sort a catalytic reaction to neutralise the combustion gases. I've seen them on boats anyway.

Re: Quick heating question

Have you considered something like this that runs from a self contained gas bottle:

Provence Living Flame Portable Heater

Bottled gas is obviously much more expensive to use than mains but if it's for occassional use only is an option...

You can also get wall mounted fires that you can supply from bottled gas stored outside just the other side of the wall requiring a single hole for the gas pipe if flueless or can have a flue going through the wall, but these would have to be professionally fitted so you may as well get the mains gas plumbed through...
