Hi people,

This if for 7 windows, 1 door and 1 patio/french door.I have been quoted £5500 by britelite and £4500 by Anglian

Just wanted to know if anyone had any cooments on these two firms and what price they did similar amount of windows/doors done lately

Additionally does the patio frames have to be reinforced?

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

I would try sourcing them from a local supplier, they are invariably cheaper. If security is an issue then look at rockdoor, they are advertised as 'the drug dealers choice of door in Salford' as it takes the police so long to get through them. Had them in my last house and they are brilliant.

when you say local supplier, do you mean just looking at yell pages ? and then also checking who's frame/windows they are supplying?

Best to go to a one man band kind of set up or a couple of guys who work together rather then a company. The bigger the company the more expensive it will be.

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

I'd second what others have said about using a local company rather than a national chain. IMO there are two aspects to these things (applies to kitchens and bathrooms too). One is the quality of the materials but just as importantly, it's how well they are fitted. The national chains tend to use sub-contract fitters who are often paid "piece work". So, the quicker they are "in and out", the more they earn. Smaller companies tend to have their own fitters who are paid a wage and take more pride in their workmanship. If there is a problem, they will be the ones who have to go back and fix it.

Personally, I wouldn't let Anglia anywhere near my house, regardless of price. This is not slander or lible, just my personal opinion of them.

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

I also recommend you go for a local supplier.
In my experience, in several houses, calling the likes of Everest/Weatherseal is a total waste of time, as their prices are in a different stratosphere from local independents.
That's even with their usual 50% offers, or whatever.
To give you an idea of the difference in prices, the last property I had done was 1 year ago.
A one-bed flat that needed one door and three windows.
Brown wood effect on the outside, white on the inside.
The dearest quote was over £5000.00 (yes, really, for one door and three windows)
We got it done for £2800.00 (which I still baulked at, really)

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

I'm on the other side of the fence. We got flooded in 2007 and had to have our external doors replaced. They were originally Anglian (although 10-15 years old). The chaps emplayed by the insurance conmpnay to replace them turned up with a complete load of rubbish, the quality was nowhere near the Anglian stuff. We got the insurance company to have them taken back out and Anglian to come and fit the same as we had. It's worth the money IMO.

An example is the front door. It was originally a wood door. The replacement was a uPVC door with a 2mm anti theft alluminium plate inside. Anglian did a wooden door replacement with a 2mm steel!! plate inside. Cheap door was 3 way locking system, Anglian was 5 point locking system.

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

Without seeing the installation, obviously makes it difficult, but I would aim a guide at about 3k to 3½k.

Depending on the type of profile used, the patio may or may not be reinforced, but it almost certainly will be, even if not fully, it will be reinforced where needed.

Just do an internet search using your local are or town, I'm looking to gey secondary glazing and have been amazed at the number of local businesses. You als get the added advantage of being able to say you are getting quotes from xxxxxxx or that xxxxxxxx company quoted whatever, that way you can ensure even more competitive pricing.

so from the consensus, should i take it that the issue with anglian/National glazers is not the quality of the supplied product BUT the possibility of rip off prices?

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

I must say, £4500-£5500 for 7 windows, 1 door + 1 patio door sounds pretty damned reasonable to me.
I bet we'd pay a stack more for the same in Aberdeen.

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

Well my parents used Anglian about 15 years ago and they did a terrible job with the patio door which leaked every time there was a heavy downpour. It was only when a local firm replaced it about 5 years ago that we discovered the Anglian fitters had not installed a lintel which had caused the brickwork to shift slightly allowing the rainwater to seep in.

Whilst the quality of the fitting by the local firm was good the actual product itself was fairly poor so they went back to using Everest (who'd done the front of the house many years ago) to replace the front door and seem to be happy with the job, even tho it cost almost 50% more than local firm.

Definitely worth asking around for a reputable local firm if any of your neighbours have something similar to what you're looking for tho, even only for price comparison.

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

The same work practices seem to go on with large national or multi-national kitchen companies.
My neighbour had a terrible job done by Moben-appointed fitters.
No markings on their van and stinking of body odour every day.
Apprently, going by their accents, a couple of Glaswegian blokes who were living in their van until the (terrible) job was done.
I would imagine, as with lorry drivers, they were given an overnight accommodation allowance but chose to sleep in their van and pocket it instead.
It'll be a local kitchen company for me, with local lads doing the fitting.
Ones I can hunt down and shoot like dogs, if they cock it up.

I have sent you a PM with a good recommendation in your area.

I personally wouldn't touch Anglian, heard too many horror stories about them. In fact go to youtube and search Anglian Windows and your see loads of videos from unhappy people.

Beware if too cheap, you get what you pay for and if too cheap they are either using crap windows or crap installers.

Sutton Windows would cover your area I think. When I had some quotes they seemed fairly reasonable, came recommended and the guy seemed fairly straight up.

Everest are the worst for cold calling, puts me off ever using them, not to mention all the nightmares I've heard people have with them.

We had 8 windows and two doors done for £3500 by a local company here in Southampton - Pro Glaze. Pretty good service with the actual install, amazed it only took 2 days! This was in January this year.

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

Unfortunately(?) I have already paid a deposit. £4000 for 1 door, double french doors and 7 windows.
This suprisingly was the cheapest quote i got in my area from any company large/ medium or even small ones with a presence on the high street

just has a look at youtube and there were some horific jobs done by them. But that can be said about some of the other ones as well big/small OR Maybe i am trying to convince myself.

seeing those vid's , i'm tempted to let go of my £400 deposit and look for other installer/quotes.....

surely there has got to be some people here happy with anglian windows?

Hmm that seems very cheap to me, personally that would send alarm bells ringing.

I've heard only bad things about Anglian but that doesn't mean they won't do a good job for you. Just make sure you don't pay the balance in full until you are 100% satisfied with it. Or if they wont refund your deposit and you are having second thoughts then you might have to swallow the loss

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

having seen the youtube videos, it gives me info on what to look for when they do the installation i.e the fixings to the wall and that i have to pray the garden hose on the windowto see if there is enay water entering the casing and to also make sure that the windows close properly and a few other stuff....

If not up to my satisfaction then i wont hand over the balance of the payments.

my neigbour hand anglian and it was a very good job they did + she has had them replace her conservatory window as well.

if the work turns out to be bad after payment, then i guess i will have to run an old banger car thru their front door again and again till they sort me out!

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

I've not seen any youtube clips, but if you're really going to use your hose on them, you'll have to wait until the sealant around the edge of the frames has cured (24 hours). And if you do, make sure you simulate rainfall, i.e. let the water spray finely from above.
Don't shoot a high pressure hose from a low angle, or you might end up with water getting in through the drainage channels which might make you think you have a problem when you don't.

Re: Double Glazing price /recommendation

No experience of Anglian actual product or installation, but I do have of their sales.

Unfortunately they employ the kind of sales technique which I cannot stand.

You ask them in for a quote, all very nice, they show you their brochure etc, guy goes round the house and measures up. Then comes back and gives another long talk and finally a price. Now here's the catch, this price he gives you is if you say yes there and then. Forget about thinking about it, the price is almost 50% more if you want to think about it.

I cannot stand this kind of sales technique, high pressure to get people to say yes there and then.

The price we were quoted may have been excellent and Anglian product may have been superb but I'm not going to say yes for 9K of windows without thinking it over for a few days.

Personally I would use a local small company. We have one near us who came out and left us a quote, no pressure.

That's been very much my experience. Salesman came round, offered 50% (£23,000 -> £11,500) if we signed up there & then. Needless to say we refused (if they can make it 50% now, they surely can in 2 days time when we've had a chance to think about it). We eventually went for a local company; perfectly good at £5,600.

However, that being said, the product itself seemed perfectly good. My daughter & her husband got their place done by Anglia on a special deal which was reasonably priced, and the work was first class. A year later, they're still happy.

So my experience is: if you can get past the sales pitch to a good price (do not sign up there and then), then the product & installation are fine.

Ditto. I had Anglian around to quote several months ago. Very nice salesman who started off at £20,000. When I laughed he said that was the catalogue price so it would be £12,500. Still laughing I said thanks but no thanks to which he made a phonecall to his manager (surprise surprise) who magically managed to drop it to £6,000 which I thought was a fair price as I had other quotes around that region from other installers.

I said I had another company due around the next day so I would get back to them so he left. Ten minutes after the bloke left my phone rang and it was his manager (surprise surprise). If I signed up today they could do it for £5,000. I explained again I was getting other quotes and he tried all the pressure tactics stuff and when he realised I wasn't going to agree to it he put the phone down on me (goes to prove what their customer service would be like)

Out of principle I wouldn't have used them because they were basically trying to rip me off. I've since heard they are in administration but I'm not sure how true that is?
